Soar
LJR Dec 2016
I am an eagle with broken wings
Man has clipped them bare
The passion that once called me its home is no longer residing there

My feathers are matted, tattered and torn
From this ceaseless winter night
Sticks and stones have broken the bones
Of the wings that should take flight

A motionless grey bundle
Created for so much more
Unable to spread wide and catch the wind
When i was born to soar

Despite cruelty's thundering voice
That rains down its hate in showers
Time has whispered in my ear that
Birds of prey will never cower

Wind, sun, cold, rain and
Whatever this life may bring
The sun will still rise tomorrow
Because eagles fly with broken wings

The Story of the Eagle
LJR Sep 2017
This is a sad story.
It is the tale of an eagle and a human.
Now this human loved the eagle and everyday the eagle would return to the human.
But, everyday the eagle came, its feathers were trimmed and a metal link was chained to its ankle.
And, after a while, the bird was no longer able to soar high above the clouds.
Day by day, link by link, feather by feather.
Sooner or later, the weight overcame the strength of the great bird and it came crashing to the ground.
It was found by the human who loved it ans nurtured to it back to health and kept it in a cage.
But truth cannot be hidden, for birds of prey are still majestic even after they are caged.
The eagle thought to himself "They say all birds are free. Free to do what they want. But i am not free."
Everyday the eagle wished desperately to open the cage, walk into the sunlight, spread his wings, and soar far off into the sky.
Sooner or later, he began questioning his ability to fly. He doubted the strength of his wings. He disregarded his dreams.
But his strength increased, his wings grew in length until he no longer recognized the weight of the chains.
They fear you, great eagle.
They fear what you can become.
Break your chains. They can hold you no longer.
Be free to fly among the stars.

Letter to a Younger Me
LJR Apr 2017
Hush little baby,
Don't you cry
This pain will not last you through the night
I know the screaming does not end
But pills put you in the ER again

Hush little baby,
Dry those tears
Your patients need a doctor in a few years
Please don't heed things that they will say
They're all just jealous anyway

Spend more time with who you love
Because time with them is from up above
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I know you're scared.

The sun is coming.

The Truth About Abuse
LJR Aug 2018
I am a woman
And you are a man.
You are celebrated
And I am tolerated.
Even when mistreated
They still call me conceited
And when I told the true story
They called it defamatory

Somehow, they punish me
For situations they did not see
People try to taint my name
And all their words increase the pain
Then when you've had all you can take
Your faith in people slowly starts to break
You'll wish the talking would just come to an end
And then it is you, the victim, who must make amends

So, never defend yourself from the start
People will judge and tear you apart
This is why no one dares to speak
Because the outcome is so often bleak
There is nothing you can do
When people change their minds about you
So, I give the finger in my head
And apologize for what I said

If I had known the pain incurred
I would have never said a word
People will critique your every move
And of your character they'll disapprove
They will break you down until you cry
Without knowing the reasons why
You acted out in such a way
When you were just trying to survive day by day

"The Procedure"
LJR Feb 2019
Their fearful eyes staring back at me
An angel in white, standing by the bed
I held their hand, quieted their screams of pain
Cold, metal equipment ****** the womb
Disguised as medical training
They made me an angel of death
Leading the lambs to slaughter

Once an avid supporter, I hang my head in shame
There is no freedom in this, no liberation
More pain than childbirth
The shame and guilt floods the air
Choking each and every tear from their eyes
You know the moment it happens
Feel the spirit as it leaves

I did not choose this, but I cannot leave
I cannot escape this for 30 days
They have made me an accomplice
It haunts me in my dreams at night
The sound of the loud thunk into the tank
It is finished

He leaves without a word
But he left you: exposed, bleeding, vulnerable, silent
I am here cleaning your wounds, wiping your tears
Every scared, shaking little lamb
I am sorry

I lead you to slaughter
