Grasping at straws
Herman Winter Aug 2014
I stand in a cave
where I can't feel my feet,
There's no room for the brave
or thoughts of defeat.

I reside here alone
though all can be felt,
Harder than bone
but to touch is to melt.

Nothing can be had
in this place that I dwell,
It's driving me mad
but it's swell so oh well.

A sonnet for a mother
Herman Winter May 2014
They say only in infinity
do two parallels meet,
but in this house at 6 pm
every weeknight when we eat

the finite get a touch of love
as food is more than just prepared,
when you cook it with the thought of us
it’s more than taste that shows you care.

Through acts alone you give us life
beyond what’s seen upon the surface,
despite the cause of any strife
you give us all a purpose.

Forever to you we owe a debt
to be paid in love and life beget.

Hey, bartender
Herman Winter Feb 2014
If you don't mind, I think I'd like a drink
Can't take much more of these polar extremes
If you don't mind, I'm not looking to think

I can feel myself starting to sink
This world's not made for the in-between
If you don't mind, I think I'd like a drink

Don't want to talk, I wrote it all in ink
I've come to learn nothing's as it seems
If you don't mind, I'm not looking to think

Growing up here I felt myself shrink
In a feeble attempt to find my scene
If you don't mind, I think I'd like a drink

I stretched myself to the outer brink
Certain now I've figured out what it means
If you don't mind, I'm not looking to think

It was here and gone in less than a blink
Like figments and fragments of last night's dream
If you don't mind, I think I'd like a drink
If you don't mind, I'm not looking to think

— The End —
