"hightop" poems
Paper crowns and bullrush scepters
Her throne a willow tree
In a blue cotton gown
And Nike hightop glass slippers
She reigns over her grassy courtyard
A fearless leader ~ Wild and free
A champion of the winged and four legged
Of apple trees and dandelion seed
Dutiful of her backyard kingdom
Collecting leavings and legacy
Long may she live!
Long may she reign!
~ Our backyard Queen ~

i saw your old converse sneakers-
laces mismatched-
dangling from the hightop stool.
you smiled at me from across the road.
i came in just to say
i love you too

Sunshine and
jelly beans
. . . some of the most
common of the ordinary things
Playing cards in bicycle
spokes . . . they could hear us coming , no joke !
No one could outrun me in my red Keds hightop tennis shoes
Staying after school for misbehaving in class
wasn't cool
Playing square ball as the autumn leaves fell . . .
Golden sunshine , Queen of the woods , a magical spell
I was living in my best imagination
I was nowhere . . .
then everywhere , giving it my all to tell
