The Original Lyrics
THE NIGHT A NOWHERE MAN TOOK YESTERDAY AWAY
it was a cold days night
when I heard the news please say it's a lie
it's not for him to say goodbye
now here I am
closer than I ever thought I'd be
but to late to say hello....goodbye
so wipe the tears for all the years
he kept you company
you know he would have wanted it that way
but even Lucy in the sky
and the sergeant had to cry
THE NIGHT A NOWHERE MAN TOOK YESTERDAY AWAY
imagine what might have been
he was a man in a million my friend
who was just starting over again
after all the years
of sitting back watching the wheels
it's a sad day in Strawberry Fields ....forever
so wipe the tears for all the years
he kept you company
you know he would have wanted it that way
but even Lucy in the sky
and the sergeant had to cry
THE NIGHT A NOWHERE MAN TOOK YESTERDAY AWAY

Two years after John Lennon's death the record company asked me to write a song about him. Figured why bother - what was the point - every writer in the world would be writing a song dedicated to him. For the next two years I will admit I kept trying to find that one line that would express my disgust and hatred for his killer and at the same time convey just how much John would be missed.
My friend Matt and I once had lunch with John (just lucky - right place right time) and found John to be one of the most soft spoken inquisitive individuals I had ever met. He was more interested in asking me why I wrote something then telling me about himself - he was John Lennon for God's sake I had a million questions to ask.
To make a long story short I kept trying to find the words that would best describe John and also his killer. Finally one day it came to me - the title for the song was right in front of me all the time - it was in Paul and John's songs I had finally found the two songs - that would represent the useless human being who killed him and the beauty of the man who died that evening.
