Who makes an indentation
Even in a heart
Of stone
Your warm smile
Melts away the chill
Of a cold heart

Just Hanging
Mary Anne Norton Dec 2020
Hanging on with
A fisherman's thread
Barely enough to
Keep me hanging on
Perhaps I won't.
Let go
As I sink deeper and
Deeper
If I cling tight enough
I can pull through
And carry on

Mom had the spoon
Dad had the paper
Mom had the recipe
Dad penned
Mom cooked
Both used their gifts
At one time or another
Mixing of words
Mixing of foods
Dad dished up words
Mom.dished up food
And when all
Was complete
A feast of words
A feast of food
Was served
And digested

This the day
Mary Anne Norton Sep 2020
nineteen years ago
As the twin towers
Burnt to the ground
Lives lost all around
But the Spirit of man
Prevailed
Those who risked
Their own lives
So others may live
Gasping for breath
In heated flame
Others helping each other
To hold on and escape
Prayers food shelter
Lined  the street
And now Ground Zero
Sacred Ground HolyGround
Let's take a moment today
Giving thanks to those
Who died
Let's resolve in our
Own place in Life
To be a hero in
Our everyday walk

Feeling like
An onion
Sometimes
Where each layer
Is peeled
Slice by
Painful slice
The deeper one goes
The more it
Makes one cry
Tears held back
From long ago
Perhaps yesterday's
Tears
Maybe even waiting
For tomorrow
Just trying to figure out what an onion must feel like and how others must feel
Written after seeing someone crying
Crying, after being bullied

The graveside
Sniffing the ground
Of your owner

No answer
You lay down

And died

Words you could have kept
Let me get a broom
To clean up
All the mess

Could hurt me
With each word
You wrote
You only hurt yourself
Cuz now your
Left behind
to pick up
After
Don't even know where this came from

Minding my p's and
Qrst's
Knowing you
Are near
I walk on eggshells
Not knowing if
You will explode
At me
Or hold me
Close
Be ready to stay
Or ready to
Run
It doesn't get
Any easier
So why do
I stay
For all those who are caught in
the web of whether to stay or go.
This is only from what I've heard  not experienced my
Heart and Prayers go out to you.

Early Morn
Mary Anne Norton Nov 2020
Such a peaceful time
Early morn is
To awaken
While the world
Is still sleeping
In
Catching the first
Sounds of silence
Perhaps the faint
Sounds of
Morning chimes
Or soft whispers
From stirring leafs
And the golden ball
Of fire
Felt from the sun
The stillness
Ah the stillness
Time for thinking
Gentle thoughts
Before the noise
Of day
Joins in

Gossiping about

Oh for the giggles
Of husband and wife

Laughing at
Their own mistakes
Oh for the giggles

And take a bow

Remembrance
Mary Anne Norton Sep 2020
The widow sits
In his overstuffed chair
Knowing of his
No return
Hoping for one last
Smell of the
Day's  sweat
Mixed with shaving
Lotion
Accepting the faintest
Hint of work gone by
But tears wash away
All memories
Laying back with
Aching legs
Remembering days
Gone by
Eyes burning from
Salty tears
Ready to nod off
The dog reminds you
It's time to walk
Last night I was talking to my friend
About someone who died  long ago

They will pass me by
Without a thought
And if so its okay

For this moment in time

But I'm crazy in love
With Life
And I'm just
Letting God know

Where did you
Gogh
Are you hiding
Among the Sunflowers
This Starry Night
How sad to love
So deeply
Till your ear
Couldn't hear the
Sounds of pain
What brilliant flashes
Of color you
Painted on canvas
Desperately crying out
How lonely a life
So much a struggle
Wrestling with

Pieces their

Mary Anne Norton Dec 2020
The rain Falling on
Top of my head
With each cold
Splatter
Reminding me
Of days gone by
Washed away
With tears
Regrets
And happiness
The need for
Sheltering
And staying
Warm and dry
From puddles
Surrounding me
Though raindrops may
Fall gently
Tip tapping on the window
With a melodious sound
It can also be frightening
As you await the bus
And puddles
As big as a lake
Splash you like a monsoon
Rain like friends
Can come down
And pounce on
Your feelings
Or can calm
You with gentle
Song
Do I want
Rain Rain go away
Or Rain Rain  stay
