Blue heron on
Icy lake
Walking on thin water
Passerby says
Made me think
How often I
Walk on thin water
The difference
The heron
Stayed for a few moments
And gracefully
Flew away
I on the other hand
Walk on thin ice
And fall in
With baggage

It's gonna rain
Mary Anne Norton Jun 2020
The clouds are faded purple
Moisture is in the air
But the breeze so gentle
Whispers crost my cheek
Birds are flying
Squirrels tagging
Feels like it's gonna rain
Hope it pours down buckets
To water the earth
And cleanse my soul

I look out the
Window of my soul
There i see you
Freezing in the.cold
Tattered blankets nearby
While others join
The.neverending
Line for food
Some women grabbing
Another ice pack
For the bruises to
Go Away
For some the food
From.yesterday's trash
Seems.like a good dinner
Empty pockets
Another day without
A dollar
A baby lying
By the trash
And a bony dog
Sniffing their remains
Sniffing their remains
Perhaps I should
Open the door
Of my heart
And go outside
And do something

A contradiction
Tearing me apart
Piece by piece
From your ego

Nothing sustained you

Leaving me unmercifully
Ready to fight back
You expected war
But I came
To bring peace

Money no money
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
We say we have no money
Did we look down at
The worn out shoes
Earth stained blood stained
Pus stained putrid smelling
Shoes of the homeless
We say we're broke with
Nothing to spare
Did we look up at
Earth stained blood stained
Pus stained putrid smellingtops of the homeless
We want our name brand pants
Did we look in the middle at
Earth stained blood stained
Pus stained putrid smelling pants of
The homeless
Perhaps the homeless
Are the rich ones
They've been through it all
Earth stained blood stained
Pus stained putrid smelling life
Traveling in worn out shoes baggy pants hole threaden tops
They felt the sun beat
Down on their backs
The moon and stars
lighting the way
And newly acquired friends
Sleeping  on benches
They are rich with the
Love they share
Next time we say
We're broke
Perhaps we can put
Some.money  in a can
Or a donated coffee
Perhaps with extra
Cream and sugar
We will always have
The poor with us
So let's open the door
Let them through
With dignity
And perhaps a dollar
Or two
Someone the other day said they don't have money yet they make two timesaving much
I saw a homess man on the street that day and wrote this

For the New Year

I wish you..

A pen of ink
That never
Stops flowing
Paper in abundance
A trashcan nearby
A dictionary.and thesaurus
And poetry nearby
A clear head
To focus
Memories soft
And warm
Experiences to write
About
New people to meet
And places to go
And love continuing
To grow
And when you go
To bed at night
Know you are loved
From above

A warm wish to you
And yours
Happy New Year

Oh the sound of geese
Mary Anne Norton Jan 2021
I'm intoxicated by
The sound of geese
Flying over a sky
Of grey
Honking loud and
Strong
Echoing their happiness
Throughout the universe
I'm entranced by
The formation of geese
Now forming a vee
The freedom.they have
The grace they share
In flight
I'm grateful for the
Sound and flight
The movement I feel
As they pass over
My head
And leave me
In awe
As I wondrously
Stare at.
The sky
I watched the geese fly overhead this
Morning. It is such an awesome feeling.
To be alive and experience nature.

Rain
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
Rain sounds stir within
My very being
Sometimes I'm scared
Like a lost child
Looking for their mother
Seeking shelter
As rain increases
So do my fears
Of yesteryear and today
Soft patters of rain.
Reminders of dancing
In the rain
Rain rain go away
Come again another day
Perhaps when I'm ready
To weather the storm.
In my heart

Again
Mary Anne Norton Dec 2020
Sometimes it's hard
To laugh
When others
Are crying
Harder to live
When others
Are dying
When others around
Have plenty to eat
Yet right next door
There is no meat
A house of
Friends
Day in and
Day out
Let all alone
With no one
About
Abath of bubbles
With plenty
To spare
Yet you go
***** smelly
And bare
While choosing closets
Of shoes
To wear
Your shoes are full
With no holes
To spare
A limo.just goes
Speeding by
As for you
A dumpster standing
By
You don't have
Change
A dollar would do
To  put in
Your worn pocket
And make you
Feel new
May you be loved
With each crumb
You beg
And get a new
Soap for your
Bleeding leg
If I see you again
In one more line
May I stop what
I'm doing and
Give you
Some time

January
Anew year awakens
New promises
Put to death
Grudges
Waiting for
February
New loves and
Sweet promises
March
New lucky.friends
And a grand month
To dance into
April
If not careful showered
Upon
But hopefully with
Joy not sorrow for
May
Flowers in the garden
Of friends
Awaiting the sunshine of
June
Fresh out of school
Ready to play till
July
Where friends ignite
Bright as colors of
August
Bittersweet and
Sad till
September
With learning
Something new
From each other
And
Awakening to
Colors.of friendship
Saving thanks for
November
A caunopia of friends
And the souls
Left behind and
Waiting for snowy days
In December
Where the gift of
Friendship  is shared
Each month has a
Story to share
With one another
As we grow and
Change with the seasons

Droplets of morning dew
On Autumn's leaf
Reminding me what
Season I'm in
Colors shining in and

Vibrant oranges for
Happiness past
And yet to come
Brilliant yellows for
Warm memories
Long ago
And more to come
Blended leaves for

And still will come
Autumn a season

Can you share your lunch
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
That peanutbutter sandwich
Looks so good
Oodles of nuts and crunch
Seeping out of homemade bread
A glass of cold milk
To wash it down
Celery sticks and carrots
Green as grass
Orange as the sun
A Shiny red apple
Looks like it's been polished
And ready to bite
Napkins for sticky fingers
And juicy hands
You said you would share
I didn't have to ask
You already made it
Just for me
Let's eat our sandwich together
Drinking our milk
Crunching our veggies together
Letting the juice
Drip down from our chin
Wipe off our hands
And share our time together
This is dedicated to my Mom for all
The loving care She put into making a simple sandwich out of love with carrots and celery on the side with an apple and
milk for the six of us Thank you Mom
