Tears
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
So happy to hear you laugh
After all the tears
That you shed
Oceans and oceans
Of tears
Tossing over me
Tried wiping away
Another wave came
If I were the sun
I'd dry them away
Perhaps if I dance
On my head
And fall to the ground
I'll get a giggle or two
Luckily I won't
Have to
But I would
But I won't
Because I just
Heard you laugh
So hard to see someone cry especially when
You really can't do anything

Was It You
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Thoughts were of you
Then I forgot who
You were
I tried to remember
Who of who
Made me.laugh
Made me cry
And made me want
To dance and sing
Who picked up
The pieces.of
A broken mess
Or helped me with
My math as I struggled
Was it you
Tell me
It was long ago
I think it was
My heart is aching
And I want to say
Thank you
But tell me please
Tell me
Was it
You

Old Friends Revisited
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Today i need an
Old friend
I will revisit
My childhood friends
Mother Goose  Curious George
Fairy Tales  Ferdinand
Mike the Steam Shovel
Madeline Good Night Moon
And so many more
The pictures  the rhythm
These books lift me up
Put a smile on my face
Thinking of my mom
Or dad sharing a story with me
These books were the mortar
For my foundation of reading
And building my own words
Into a poem

Rain Unannounced
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Rain came unannounced
Got caught in a downpour
Hair dripping wet
Clothes soaking
Shoes squishing
Oh for a warm fire
To dry wet hair
Heat my clothes
Comfort my toes
In my shoes
A hot tea with cream
Would be nice
To follow

Go to sleep
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Day draws  to a close
Darkness has appeared
The moon brightly shines
Leaving dancing shadows
On my blanket
Stars above twinkle
Hoping to join in the show
But there are too.many
Out there to join in the fun
There's a calmness in the air
Stilling the hearts all around
Time to settle in and breathe
In the magic of nighttime
Close your eyes and dream
Of a  new tomorrow
Let your worries diminish
Let lovely thoughts abound
Good night sleepy head
Good night

Unwanted
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Unwanted skirts
Unwanted lives
Tossed and thrown
To one another
Until both are permanently
Terminated in the hands of fate
Each finally reach their destiny
Of struggling no more
At the hands of others
Only to lie dormant
After fighting so peacefully
To be free
Wrote this years ago just happened upon it

A Cat
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
A cat 🐈 curled
Around my neck
Purring a happy
Melody
Letting me know
That all would
Be okay
Jumping up
To get her
Milk
To let her know
That all would
Be okay
Use to have a cat. They seem to know
Just when to purr

Hues of.blushing pink
Soft blues in the distance
Snowy white clouds

Giggles
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Oh for the giggles
Of little boys and girls
Making nonsensical jokes
As they try
To up the other
Oh for the giggles
Of teen boys and girls
Gossiping about
What's new
Oh for the giggles
Of husband and wife
Sharing a moment
Or two
Oh for the giggles
Of men and women
Laughing at
Their own mistakes
Oh for the giggles
That turns sadness
Into joy

Words
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Watch what comes from
Your mouth
Your words
Could bring sunshine
To a lost soul
Or damage
Someone for Life
Words can sting
And venom from
Them
Could cause even
Death
Choose words wisely
As you've probably heard
If you can't say
Something nice
Don't say it
At all
Too many people
Have been.buried
In words
Saw one ******* TV  crying because she had been bullied by words the pain will never go away some people have killed themselves because they could stand the pain no longer too all those who have been
hurt you are loved

Pick up
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Alternating picking up
Fallen plants
Winds are blowing
Plants are falling
Harder the wind
Keeps blowing
The more the plants
Keep falling
Perhaps like me
The stronger it gets
The quicker I fall.
But will someone
Be there to
Pick me up
Or will I just
Continue to
Lay there

A poem is born
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Words spinning round
My head
Like clothes in a dryer
Round and round
They spin
Until complete
Sharpened pencil
Thick eraser
Lots of paper
Trash can nearby
Thought down
Thought erased
Thought down
Possibly to save
Thought thoughts thoughts
Erase erase erase
Becomes my mantra
Suddenly a sentence
Makes sense
Surprisingly the next
One does
Hold that thought
As another joins in
Read read read
Check check check
Pen pen pen
Is it ready for
Completion
Perhaps now
Because here
It is

Daddy
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Just tore at
My heartstrings
Little boy calling
Out to his adopted father
Daddy
Does he know he's adopted
Whether or not
He does.
Doesn't really matter
What matters
He is loved by
Someone he can call
Daddy
The little boy next door is adopted from
China as neighbors we just say hi in passing maybe slip in a word or two
But I heard those words and love for the
father made this poem for me perhaps into a prayer when i think of how much he is thriving because of Daddy and Mommy too

Alone
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Just leave me alone
Perhaps for only
Today
Or even
Tomorrow
Whatever it is
Leave me alone
So I can stare
At the empty
Wall of my
Imagination
And feel the bitter cold
Of no one
Hear nothing
But the sad
Lonely  beat of
My heart
Let the pain surface
So it can disappear
Into the universe
With all the other
Dark spots
Hidden on
The moon

This Feeling
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
This feeling of
Angst is upon me
Like the chill
Of Autumn morn
Tickling down
My spine
A feeling
I'd rather not
Possess
Generally the feeling
Turns to reality
And I am doomed

Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Nothing has gone right
Since I've gotten out of bed
Perhaps I'll go back
As long as I don't
Stub my foot against the bed
Just to make me cry

Autumn's Entrance
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Summer days are fading
Warmth turns into
Morning chill
Breezes are cooler
Not as gentle
But still accepting
Rustic smells in
The air
Burning leaves
Campfires far away
Sweet teas traded
For warm apple cider
Long flannel shirts
Covering sun bleached
Skin
Squirrels running round
Gathering winter's  harvest
Birds heading for
A warmer place
To nest
Dogs sporting sweaters
Made just for them
While owners
Lead with jackets on
Another season has left
A new one ushers in
With a beauty
All its'
Own

A calendar of friends
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
January
Anew year awakens
New promises
Put to death
Grudges
Waiting for
February
New loves and
Sweet promises
March
New lucky.friends
And a grand month
To dance into
April
If not careful showered
Upon
But hopefully with
Joy not sorrow for
May
Flowers in the garden
Of friends
Awaiting the sunshine of
June
Fresh out of school
Ready to play till
July
Where friends ignite
Bright as colors of
August
Bittersweet and
Sad till
September
With learning
Something new
From each other
And
Awakening to
Colors.of friendship
Saving thanks for
November
A caunopia of friends
And the souls
Left behind and
Waiting for snowy days
In December
Where the gift of
Friendship  is shared
Each month has a
Story to share
With one another
As we grow and
Change with the seasons

Autumn's Gathering
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
The wind slaps
Across my face
Knocking me back
To my senses
Reminding me of
The joy
To be alive
To see falling leaves
And geese forming
A vee overhead
The smell of leaves
Crunching at
My feet
Touches of a small
Chill tingling my back
A warm hoody
To snuggle in
Warm apple cider
With a cinnamon stick
Oh yes the carnival
Of Autumn
Full of laughter
And surprise
Oh to be greedy
And collect every
Moment
To keep and cherish
Standing outside enjoying all Autumn  has to offer before the winter chill

My Lord's Prayer
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Knees can't  bend
To the ground
Hands too balled
Up to pray
Voice too weak
For words
Mind can't remember
How to sign
The Cross
Ears can't hear
What you say
But I give you
My heart
Did you hear
Me
Amen  Alleluia
Just thinking what it must be like
When you can't pray like you did
