Warm
B H H Burns Jun 2017
You fresh flesh
Lying in long layers beside me
In the gloom.

You're a mess of lithe limbs,
Knotted hair and
Pretty skin.

You're a beautiful buffet,
Deeply delicious, and
Inviting, and

You're a lush display of
Raw, warm meat
That's good enough
To eat.

Of Time And Tide
B H H Burns Jun 2017
Darkness has cast her slumbering spell,
The land lies dreaming beneath her hand,
Thick sable sheets have swaddled the stars
And waves lay like lovers on the sand.

Times seems swallowed by stillness and silence,
These gentle beasts feasting on movement and sound;
No breeze dares to be in reach of their presence,
Even mist lies motionless over the ground.

But soon comes the morning, and dawning of life,
As little sounds stir ‘cross the countryside
At the beach, the waves wake with a sighing of surf,
Then rise, and rejoice with the victorious tide.

Love's Wounds
B H H Burns May 2017
After a break-up
It takes time to mend
If you rebound too quickly
Your heart gets the bends.

And don't be ashamed
To face life on your own
For love's wounds will heal quickly
If you leave them alone.

Since Becoming Me
B H H Burns May 2017
It's strange,
Sublime and
Surprising
But
Since becoming me,
All the things I truly believed
I
Wasn't allowed to do
Wasn't allowed to feel
Wasn't allowed to be,
Are now the things
I
Proudly put on view
Pure and unconcealed
For all the world to see.

Lost Property
B H H Burns Jun 2017
I am not lost property,
And I never was
So you have no cause
To lay your claim
On me.

I am not your property,
And I never was, so now
We're divorced, you must
Allow yourself to see,
That I'm not lost now,
I'm just

Free.

I Am An Island
B H H Burns Jun 2017
I am an island.
I am a little spit of land,
Swept away by unsettled waters
and shifting sands;
Forced alone to
make my home
In an insubstantial sea.

Yet on my island
I am free; free to preserve
my eccentricities
in a nature reserve
made from nurturing love of
what I choose to be.

I am an island.
Borne away on wistful waves, I
travel onward,
Seeking a place where
there are others who are free;
And when I find them,
There I’ll stay, and
thereafter spend my days
Not as an island…
But as me.

Dodging A Black Hole
B H H Burns May 2017
I dodged a black hole,
Took a spin
'Round its event horizon,
Then
Regained Control.

Now I'm floating out in space,
The pull of it still lingers
But
I'm in a good place,
Safe from its embrace
And gladly giving it the finger.
This poem describes how I feel following a bout of depression

What Lies Beyond Depression
B H H Burns May 2017
Tightly-wrapped thoughts only fester away
So unravel your mind’s bindings ’til they all fall away,
Open your soul to this curious world,
Let its beauty infuse you, as your body unfurls.

Let your eyes hear every sound your ears see,
Let your skin taste the sweetness of infinity,
Spread your perception out far and wide, then
Take a deep breath, and draw the universe inside.

You drink the sunlight that falls from the sky,
You breathe the air that gives everything life,
Your blood flows like rivers, and your flesh soft as earth
Your form and its functions all give your soul worth.

For nothing exists in all time and space
Without having reason, and purpose, and place, as
You are important, like all that you do –
For you are the universe, and
The universe
Is
You.
I wrote this to remind myself that, no matter what my depression might tell me, I have a place in the world, something I hope other people may feel to when they read it.

Beneath a summer moon
In a sky of faded blue,
A murmuration of starlings

Emotional High
B H H Burns Jun 2017
It begins with a beat;
A steady reverberation in an
elemental part of me.

Then the bass line comes;
A red-raw rush of energy
viciously visceral in my veins,
Elevating my feeble frame
From it’s meek and sorry state
To become something
Ferociously sublime.

And now I’m mainlining music,
Letting it
Soak into my skin
Infect my ears
Infuse my feat and
Bombard my quivering brain
With its beat
‘Til I explode into a mass
of minuscule notes;
Quick little quavers
like quarks
that waver, then stalk
through my mind,
Looking to find
fresh melodies, to which
my soul can bind
and bleed.

This is how it feels
within me,
When my body responds
to a purified beat;
This is true ecstasy –
When I fly on an
emotional high.

Patchwork Girl
B H H Burns Jun 2017
Her seemingly seamless surface
Is sewn together by her scars;
Those lost, lonely highways
That she knows lead nowhere fast.
She’s a patchwork of reflections,
A mirrored maze of emotions –
Of eyes opened wide to
Every side that must be seen.
She’s a collage
Of her calamities,
A tableau
Of her torments,
She’s an everyday eccentric
But even so, she don’t resent it,
Because she knows once she accepts it
Then she’ll finally be free.

Closer...
B H H Burns Jun 2017
Gentle steps that pad up the stairs;
Thoughtfully soft and
hushed by the hands
of midnight,
So none might
hear him advance.
But he moves with such care
That no one
but you
Would know that he’s there.

He’s on the landing now,
Creeping closer to your door
But the cautious clock
is ticking him off, so he stops
before your doorway and drops
his big bag of darkness
(that’s squirming and restless
to swallow you whole);
Then he inhales the soul
of the tick and the tock.

Now there’s nothing left
But your heart and his breath
so you know this time it is true:
That the bogeyman is in
your room
your dreams
your head
your bed
For tonight, he’s coming
for you.

What Happened To The Crows?
B H H Burns Jun 2017
What happened to the crows?
All the other birds are singing,
Yet this family seems unwilling
to lend their voices
to this summer chorus.

Perhaps they have a reason;
Perhaps they feel it’s not the season
for their melancholy caws,
And so they pause,

And they wait…

For summer to pass, and
then the world at last
will be stripped of all colourful things,
Becoming as black as the crow’s wings –
A similarly stark and dark state.

Perhaps then the crows won’t hesitate
to crowd together,
And take their place
among their fellow, feathered brethren;
Perhaps then they’ll find the strength to sing.

The City's Song
B H H Burns May 2017
Hear the calming sound of distant traffic,
The morning yawn of this slumbering town,
There, the early birds fly fast and frantic,
Here, the songbirds strive to rouse the crowds.

Soon voices merge with this morning chorus,
As fledglings fly free from their parent's nests,
Filled with the thrill of the day before them,
Wild screams and laughter burst out from their *******.

The clanging of gates cuts short the chorus,
The parents depart to tend to their nests,
Then little birds flit through playground forests,
'Til afternoon comes, then fly home to rest.

Hear the calming sound of distant traffic,
The twilight sigh of this tired-out town,
Night owls with bright eyes swoop through the darkness,
As songbirds sing lullabies all around.
