What you see is not what the mirror is made out of.
You are not the reflection either.
The infinitely thin layer that reflects the light creating the image is a shell. What is encased in the shell is the substance that makes up the mirror.
It is internal because it is beyond the reflection.
The reflection is also the perceived absence of the object
