There were a surfeit of items
Sufficient to raise eyebrows or cause comment
Among the few staid members of the Mulligan clan:
The appearance of siblings or cousins assumed (or at least hoped)
To have preceded Thomas to the choir invisible
Two or three women genuinely surprised
To discover the existence of one another,
One young man with an extremely disconcerting resemblance
To his “Uncle Tommy”,
But the entire affair carried on with something akin
To the requisite solemnity
Until such point that a couple bottles appeared
(The consensus being that the good Mulligan
Had somehow found a way to secret them in)
The end result being the proceedings
Subsequently devolved into an Irish cop wake-esque teleplay,
And in the midst of this fol-de-rol, Tippy Phelan,
Who had framed walls for generic bank buildings
And grunted and swore while cobbling together
Unnecessary cupolas and wholly superfluous cornices
On the McMansions of the small town well-enough-to-do
With Tommy (as well as, on Friday lunch-times
During the slow season, sharing a thermos
Containing a mixture which drew narrow-eyed stares
From lenient if still unhappy foremen)
Stood the final toast for the good Mulligan,
Intoning There’s a land of the quick and the land of the lost,
The trick being to build a sturdy span between them
So it’s only proper that Tommy was a ****** fine carpenter
.
She never refused my assistance.
She never refused my checks.
She never refused my loving her.
She only refused my sharing
Any small part of her life.
I wasn’t to know of her feelings.
I wasn’t to meet any friends.
I never got told her ambitions
Or shared when she met a new love.

She never said to get out of her life-
Not in so many blunt words-
Just ever too busy to meet me.
And only Voice Mail on her phone.
I’m strictly forbidden web browsing
And everything possible’s blocked.

I own nothing I that I can give her
That didn’t come from my exe’s mom,
The only mother she seems to admire.
My treasures will go to my sister’s kids
And their children, who don’t even know me.
Her windup of my earthly affairs
Will be quick and “Call One Eight Hundred”.

For someone who tried so desperately hard
And never gave up for a second
It seems life’s given me so little back
It almost was not worth my efforts.

She never will change - it’s too late for that.
There’s naught I can do to repair things.
My life’s ended up in a very dark corner
And that’s where I’ll finish my days.

My only child, my daughter, just found a new way to stab me in the heart.

I’m a star
taking center stage
a Napoleon Bonaparte
that only brightens with age

I won’t be
leftovers
you place
in the microwave
no Hors d'oeuvres
or strawberry preserves
I’m a smorgasbord
fit for only a lord

I won’t be
an ornament
you hang
on the tree
dangling on a wire
I’m a raging
forest fire

I won’t be
hushed
this woman
has guts
and won’t be
brushed away!

SCHEDAR
My heart can only
feel his pain
as he cries out in silence
drawing
me close
with sketches

He flicks his hand across the paper
pretending to erase,
cleverly removing me
from his field of vision

Mother and son connection
a generous gift
though, even a white lie is too rich in color to keep hidden

Breaking into his creations
The flood gates open
Here come the long lost tears
My sweet B
Told you no walls
Back in the days when fences were constructed to lean on
I had my fathers smile my mother's apron now they're gone
Along with brother's camera and his filming laughter reels
Along with sister's bumbling ways and admiration reals ...

Fences are made to keep in or keep out.  Sometimes
Erecting them can be a way of protecting or rejecting
No one knows the power of a fence more then those who
Crossed the holocaust fences and survived.  Fences can be
Easing posts for friendship or wired spokes with big fat
Signs that say " Keep Out" it all depends what side your on

Back in the days when my dad build a fence for grapes and vines
I knew what belonged to other people and what was truly mine
Along with my cat, my bird, my three ring binder and my fence
Along with my heart and my soul, I knew what to let in, hence ?
