This began as a criticism of overproduced, hammy, yowly, look-at-me, as-arranged-by-a-junior-high-assistant-band-director interpretations of the National Anthem.  It deteriorated. I blame the Russians.

Does Anyone Sing the National Anthem These Days?

Because Francis Scott Key was all about Who-Whoa-Whoa and Yay-Yay-Yay

A minute or so of recorded music
Over-produced in that insta-emo style
Then followed by “Whoa whoa yay oh yay whoa
Whoa yay yay yay whoa oh yay whoa whoa whoa

Whoa yay oh yay whoa whoa yay yay yay whoa
Oh yay whoa whoa whoa whoa yay oh yah
Yay whoa whoa yay yay yay whoa oh yay whoa
Whoa whoa whoa yay oh yay whoa whoa yay yay

Yay whoa oh yay whoa whoa whoa yay yay
It’s all about me-me-me-me-me-meeeeeeeeeeemeeeeeeeeeeeemeeeeeeee!”

Followed by –

Baseball: “Play ball!”

Racetrack: “Gentlemen, start your engines!”

Rodeo: “Gentlemen, start your cattle!”

The federal government’s Outer Continental Shelf Oil & Gas Lease Sales
Close: “Ladies and gentlemen, let’s open your sealed bids!”

School: “Teachers, start your sophomores.”

Austin, Texas City Council: “And now, Comrade Muffin Snort-Ponsonby,
BA, MA, MEd, Chair Emerita of the Travis County Sensitivity League, will
chant her original composition, “Spiritual Wind-Song Ode to Comrade
Stalin.”

All I am is a man
I want the world in my hands
I hate the beach
But I stand in California
With my toes in the sand

Use the sleeves of my sweater
Let's have an adventure
Head in the clouds but my gravity's centered
Touch my neck and I'll touch yours
You in those little high waisted shorts, oh

She knows what I think about
And what I think about
One love, two mouths
One love, one house
No shirt, no blouse
Just us, you find out
Nothing that we don't wanna tell you about, no

'Cause it's too cold
For you here right now
So let me hold
Both your hands in the holes of my sweater

And if I may just take your breath away
I don't mind if it's not much to say
Sometimes the silence guides our minds to
Move to a place so far away

The goose bumps start to raise
The minute that my left hand meets your waist
And then I watch your face
Put my finger on your tongue
'Cause you love the taste yeah

These hearts adore
Everyone the other beats hardest for
Inside this place is warm
Outside it starts to pour

Coming down
One love, two mouths
One love, one house
No shirt, no blouse
Just us, you find out
Nothing that I wouldn't wanna tell you about, no, no, no

'Cause it's too cold
For you here right now
So let me hold
Both your hands in the holes of my sweater

'Cause it's too cold
For you here and now
So let me hold
Both your hands in the holes of my sweater

Whoa, whoa...

Whoa, whoa, whoa...

Whoa, whoa, whoa...

Whoa, whoa, whoa...

Whoa, whoa, whoa...

Whoa, whoa...

'Cause it's too cold
For you here right now
So let me hold
Both your hands in the holes of my sweater

It's too cold
For you here right now
Let me hold
Both your hands in the holes of my sweater

And it's too cold,
It's too cold,
The holes of my sweater...

I don’t do yoga, never tried Pilates
Not many people want me at their parties
Tryna find my place, some place, oh I, oh I, oh I
And I drink a little more than recommended
This world ain’t exactly what my heart expected
Tryna find my way someway, oh I, oh I, oh I

[Chorus:]
See, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Yeah, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, hey, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free

If you ask the church then I am no believer
Spend Sundays asleep I'm just another dreamer
Still tryna find my home sweet home, oh I, oh I, oh I
And I guess I ain’t too good for money neither
I got two left feet, no, I'm no Jackson either
Just tryna find my way someway, oh I, oh I, oh I

[Chorus:]
See, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Yeah, whoa, c’est la vie
And maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free

Just tryna find my home sweet home, sweet home, sweet home, sweet home,
I drink a little more than recommended
'Cause this ain’t exactly what my heart expected

[Chorus:]
Whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Yeah, whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
But, whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free.

Whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
Whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free
Whoa, c’est la vie
Maybe something’s wrong with me
Whoa, at least I am free, oh, oh, I am free.
I don't know why this song speaks to me but... It so does...

I remember
Can't seem to forget
All those nights we spent together
They keep on coming back
I try to drink them all away
Pour a double shot of whiskey
But like a bad time
They always seem to stay

Oh whoa woe whoa
Can't get you off my mind
You're like a ba-ad time
And these memories
They're my weapon of self destruction
Oh whoa woe whoa
Can't you get out of my mind?

Well it's been a long time
But I can't seem to shelve
All these recollections
Like your record collection
And the way you looked
Reading your favorite book

I know it's time to move on
But you're still in these melodies
Just humming along
To awkward love songs
And it goes:

Oh whoa woe whoa
Can't get you off my mind
You're like a ba-ad time
And these memories
They're my weapon of self destruction
Oh whoa woe whoa
Can't you get out of my mind?

I know it's time to move on
But you're still in these melodies
Just humming along
While I strum this guitar
To awkward love songs
Singing:

Oh oh oh
Whoa woe whoa
Oh oh oh
Whoa woe whoa

Can't get you off my mind
You're like a ba-ad time
And these memories
They're my weapon of self destruction
Oh whoa woe whoa
Can't you get out of my mind?

So why do good girls like bad guys?
I had this question for a real long time
I've been a bad boy and it's plain to see
So why do good girls fall in love with me?

Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh

You've got pep in your step
You live your life with no regret
How you look when you are wet
Is something I cannot forget
I just wanna kiss your lips
The ones between your hips
If I cashed in all my chips on you
Then baby, I'd be rich

So come on!
****, please text me
I'm ready for you
So come on!
Waiting, I'm begging
So please get here soon

So why do good girls like bad guys?
I had this question for a real long time
I've been a bad boy and it's plain to see
So why do good girls fall in love with me?

Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh

Ooh la la, what lovely curves
Baby I get off by getting you off first
Sorry girl if this is quick
So please just take it in the ***, and **** my ****

So come on!
****, please text me
I'm ready for you
So come on!
Waiting, I'm begging
So please get here soon

So why do good girls like bad guys?
I had this question for a real long time
I've been a bad boy and it's plain to see
So why do good girls fall in love with me?

Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh Whoa oooh ohhh

Guitar!

So why do good girls like bad guys?
I had this question for a real long time
I've been a bad boy and it's plain to see
So why do good girls fall in love with me?

So why do good girls like bad guys?
I had this question for a real long time
I've been a bad boy and it's plain to see
So why do good girls fall in love with me?

So why do good girls like bad guys?

So why do good girls like bad guys?
(So come on, I gotta know, I need to know!)
So come on, I gotta know
So come on, tell me!

You got me and I got you
Whoa boy
Whoa girl

Sitting around
Nothing to do
Who needs glue
When I got you
Whoa boy
Whoa girl

You wear jammies
I wear jeans
When we go shopping
at our Hy-Vee
Whoa boy
Whoa girl

We had our jobs
Health insurance, too
Now they’re gone
What do you do?
Whoa
Whoa

3 bars closed,
We’re down to one
But that’s okay
Cause I got you
Whoa boy
Whoa girl

Winter’s coming
It’s getting dark
Propane’s empty
The car won’t start
Whoa boy
Whoa girl

Rough, very rough draft. Life in rural, midwestern areas is rough, very rough. Jobs are gone, communities dying, hospitals closing... Corporate Ag ruins the air and water and lives of all it touches. Anyway...

I've got an invitation to the Boston Tea Party
I'm letting you know in case you want to come with me
I heard from some friends that it's going down in history
Don't think about it twice
Just say yes

Whoa! Uh oh!
No taxation without representation
Whoa! Uh oh!
These patriot's they know how to show a good time.
Whoa! Uh oh!
What Georgie gonna think when he wakes up in the morning?
Pass me the quill, dear Hancock.

Thomas Jefferson, he has got a way with words
He really makes you believe that this dream's gonna work
(Maybe if you forget that these Brits rule the world)
I'll sign the declaration
It's all I have left to believe in

Whoa! Uh oh!
Paul Revere he says the British are coming!
Whoa! Uh oh!
Can't you hear, the belfry's bells are ringing
Whoa! Uh oh!
Pick up guns we're off to Lexington
Hoofbeats are flying out to the night.

Wait.
Here I stand.
At this Battle of Bunker Hill.
Stop.
Close your eyes.

What happend to our sanity?
Civility?
Humanity?

(It went out the door with our freedom.)

Whoa! Uh oh!
We don't need a King we have our own voices
Whoa! Uh oh!
Life and Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
Whoa! Uh oh!

US of A, it's independence.
I wrote these intentionally as lyrics to a rock song, but I felt that they were clever enough to be also considered as a poem.  I wrote this during the Revolutionary War portion of my history class.  I'm a real history nerd :D

I thought that you would change
so many times before
but I was wrong.
I was wrong.

And I thought you were different
this time around for sure,
but I was wrong.
I was wrong.

Whoa, it hurts so good,
to finally see what I should see
Whoa, it hurts so good
to finally learn to move on

I'd love you in the evening,
but in the morning I'd say
that I was wrong.
I was wrong.

I'd sing songs of sweet redemption
until the feeling would stay,
but I was wrong.
I was wrong.

Whoa, it hurts so good,
to finally see what I should see.
Whoa, it hurts so good,
to finally learn to move on.

Now this is the beginning,
although it feels like the end,
because I was wrong.
Yeah, I was wrong.

Though I loved you for a long time,
now you are just a friend,
and I was wrong.
I was wrong.

Whoa, it hurts so good,
to finally feel what I should feel.
Whoa, it hurts so good,
to finally learn to move on

Whoa, it hurts so good,
to finally be where I should be.
Whoa, it hurts so good,
and I'd change everything if I could.
A song I wrote in Missouri while on a road trip with a good friend, around a campfire in 25 degree weather in the spring of 2013 as a song for my solo project.
