how do you love a stranger
one who was never there
how do you dismiss the danger
of stripping your heart bare

you're my missing piece
a void i could never fill
i wish i would release
regret that threatens to spill

i know you had no choice
you had to walk away
though i wish i heard your voice
whenever days turned gray

i wish i knew more of you
when i had the chance
i wish i knew how to
snap out of my bitter trance

i know that it is over
there's nothing i can do
you're now six feet under
even if i wish it weren't true

how do you love a stranger
when the thought hurts like a knife
how do you love a stranger
the one who gave you life
