my mother always told me to hold my breath when I walked past a smoker.
now I inhale deeply just to prove I'm old enough to make my own promises.

when we're kissing I can feel the ash
from the flames the flicker up the walls of your lungs.

maybe that's what they mean
by secondhand smoke.
