I took my lovely niece at 9 years to the city as she's never been She grasped my hand, through the fear trembling and backing off at my rear of strangers, never known and seen
Never a father but that time I felt one Paternal over an innocent lovely one firmly grasping fist, trusting me you see, I said, you'll be fine and always will be I grew her confidence at the movies A Disney film that was spooky Monsters Incorporated a classic to be said Such a lovely bond her and I.
I took her to the confectionary section but couldn't see them unlike me, So I grabbed her tummy and legs, Lifted her up and a smile spread Even the lady behind the counter, absolutely adored her, she chose a bag of crisps & m&ms.
Now, she has kids all of her own So proud of how she has grown Still so lovely, and so strong And a lover to that she belongs
Another revision not seen here. Lots of changes. I posted this back in August 2023 on All-Poetry. This is the original version and the comments. https://allpoetry.com/poem/17311493-Niece-Visits-The-City-by-Ryan-Geoffrey-Hayward
