those kids' fingers had claws of steel
marked their mark and crept insidious
how heart longed it could not feel
now squeezed dry of crying piteous

now all panache as burnt-out ash
falls between bars of ferrous grate;
if only i could clear the cache,
begin again; wipe clean the slate
