Is there any importance?

When the sun rises it's last time
over the horizon, what will the small period of history
you and I touched mean?

Will OUR longing stares mean more
than the howls of a hungry dog?

The words of past poets;
Will THEY burn brighter
than the rants of a dumb peasant?

Will be it that thirst reigns over hunger?
Or envy over greed?

Will the truest of loves stand more immortal
than the meager sating of loneliness?

Will the anguished cries of an abandoned infant
be answered before those of the aged?

Or my cries before yours?

Does it matter?
