137
After I die, the first question I am going to ask the Devil is:  what does 137 mean?

Don't know how I'll be remembered
But I know I can't forget

I forgive those who hurt me
Still make my Springsteen bet

Atlantic City in Seattle
Kells and ferry boats

Moonlight on the water
Herman Melville wrote

Goodness is more important
Than protecting your good name

I hope they can see I love three
More than seeking fame

And I hope unknown strangers
Can also play my game

Like basketball in summertime
Like poetry in southern Spain

Like listening to hidden things
Like taking the Taipei train

I don't really have a my people
And my sons now far away

So much solitude
Another rainy day

The sadness will last forever
Is what Van Gogh did say

But maybe the happiness too
Like that day on Elliot Bay

If you see her and she asks
Tell her brown is beauty that stays

Not grateful for all things
But grateful in all things
Is what the priest did say

Difficult at times
When anxiety comes out to play

But I do believe in gratitude
And rebellion I have to say

Giordano Bruno
And saintly Dorothy Day

Break my rusty cage
Peace in the Valley I pray

Can you see my contradictions?
Yes, indeed, you may.

The Russian writer Nikolai Gogol's response when asked what he thought about Tolstoy's religious agonia with God after a conversation:

Like two bears in one den.

Nothing the peoples of Europe have produced since
is worth the first known poem to appear among them.
Perhaps they will rediscover that epic genius when they learn to accept the fact that nothing is sheltered from Fate, how never to admire force, or hate the enemy, or despise sufferers.  It is doubtful if this will happen soon.

Every time I think of the Crucifixion,
I commit the sin of envy.
