two sentence love stories
mylyn b lynch Dec 2014
you make me nervous.
i love it.

you make me fidget with my pens.
it's because i want to write down everything you say.

last night you whispered sweet nothings in my ear.
i woke up mumbling them in my sleep.

our zodiac signs are incompatible.
but they don't compare to the stars in my eyes.

you walked in and found me crying at a broken dish.
then you bought me a whole set.

you always smell like coffee.
now i smile every time i drink a cup.

i tried to sleep you off.
and i dreamed about you the whole night.

we might very well be antony and cleopatra.
except we'll be more logical.

out of all the gin joints in all the world you walked into mine.
and i couldn't stop smiling.

i've read the notes you make in the margins of the books you read.
now i know all the unspoken ways that you love me.

we are like films from two different years: 1976 and 1993.
someone decided we were classics and the world fell in love with what we already knew.

i wish that you would let me down.
just so i could give up and start loving you again.

haunted house

there is a ghost who sleeps outside my room

who stretches out on the piano bench end to end
fingers cold and palms dry and caked with mud
hair dripping thick black ink on precious wood
i think he drowned

he rises every time i sound a melancholy chord
or pour tea
or wash my sheets in steaming hot water

i dream of broken glass and robin's egg walls
whenever he is near
i taste grey dirt
and a thousand spirits fill my lungs

and it is good to sleep
and it is good to laugh
but i cannot sleep when he is around
and when i laugh i realize
he would not find it funny

there is a ghost behind my curtains
who looks at me from around the corner
and smiles and smiles and smiles
but i can't smile back

i can't say anything
because every time i look at my ghost
he reminds me of you

pink is for friends
and red is for a lover
i want someone to give me cover

(how you glow)
i've got a secret everybody knows
and your days have been tragic
we've got to protect our magic

it'll sail on wires through the night
bathed in soft pink lights
and in five hours' time
I'll let you be mine

it's up in the air
it'll work out fine
as long as I can be yours
and you can be mine
and we'll get airtime

we're too young for this old space
the very next time I see your face
I'll be dreaming

I love the sun
and you, you are the one
to take me across this field
this field
this field
where I buried my heart

and we become stardust
our palms turn to rust
hills along the skyline
built for airtime

call me back
mylyn b lynch Nov 2014
i heard from them that you're leaving
but you don't wanna stop having fun
the truth is I look for you
in everyone

I see
that you're working on changing your mood
but you still hesitate to pick up the phone
did they warn you about the quicksand
and the endless applauding hands
or is that why all I get's a dial tone

they tell you that it isn't easy speaking
in front of small groups of people
friends and neighbors who'll throw you
to the dogs

call me back when you get this
I've got a message that you can't miss
hearing through the electrical wires
and my therapist just got fired

I can tell that
you love your suitcases full of money
that's why you're in a funny mood
did they warn you about all the loopholes
and falling down the rabbit holes
or is that why all I get's a dial tone

they told me that she was pretty
and that she burned your house down
which is why you never trust anyone
well she must be pretty fancy
to get away with those things
like parking tickets and hiding from the sun

well I know I used to like you
and you know I might still do
even while you're out there having fun
cause I used to think that you were the one
