I put on my shoes same as you
One foot at a time
So, I can walk these lonely streets
Brother, can you spare a dime

I catch my reflection in the cars passing
Nothing but a blur
Makes it hard to see what's become of me
In this life of the absurd

Rest my head on an unmade bed
Of cold dirt worn concrete
If there's anything left from my daily beg
I hold it close to me

Sanity I keep deep in my dreams
Too far down to make the climb
From this slippery ***** of you never know
When you try and question why

It's not a far leap to say that I need
Help with this hole I'm in
If you look at these shoes, they could easily fit you
Depending on life's demands

And the cards you hold in hand...

I've always proudly worn my pride
On the fact that I was right
Could it be perhaps that I was wrong

On most of what I knew
In everything I tend to do
Heaven forbid, perish the thought

It hurts more than you know
When you find out you've been told
Over time a hefty share of lies

Just to keep you in the dark
Of who and what they say they are
The ones on top who wear a thin disguise

They like you exactly where you are
Kept tight in a mason jar
Keeps the focus off their slight of hand

So they can do their evil tricks
Without you ever knowing it
Whether they're on the Right or Left

If you think you know
What all is really going on
You might want to sit down and think twice

That what you think is true
Might be you without a clue
Whether it's coming from the Left or Right

I've decided outright to followed the signs
That today stand in my way
Hoping to find along the line
That I will have a nice day

I'll push and not pull like some moronic fool
On the closed doors in front of me
And take only one, candy or gum
If they are offered for free

I'll try with all my might to be as quiet
As a poor church mouse
When I am deep inside the library
And also in the Lord's house

I'll show my I.D. to those quite freely
When they ask me please
Just to let them know it's me and me alone
Standing before them they see

Look both ways at the street before crossing
In case I'm the only one that got
The memo in time about all the signs
And the car next in line doesn't stop

I'll certainly not smoke and that ain't no joke
Mostly because I don't
But even if I did who am I trying to kid
If the signs says no, I won't

I actually liked following the signs
That today stood in my way
And as much as I tried along the line
I find I had a nice day

everybody says goodbye
while some may smile
others cry
some may win
some may lose
with or without
a single clue
some don't know
just what to do
on this moral
side of life
some with tears
in their eyes
others are
completely dry
under the sun
there's nothing new
skies of gray
or skies of blue
none of us
get to choose
when we say goodbye

days spent in a laundromat
warm wind blowing where she sits
intently watching as faded socks run round
on their way to the lost and found

single mother in a puddle of unwashed dreams
pressure on her back, baby on her knee
wondering where it all went wrong
and if it's too late to choose another song

how easy it is to give up hope
in the midst of kids and laundry soap
this spin cycle is no surprise
there's not enough softener for some folks lives

woman at the counter reads her magazine
with no thought beyond the pages sheen
just another day on this dead-end job
halfhearted smile, unwelcomed nod

stuck in this life like all the rest
mid-breath is all she hopes to catch
conversations but not too deep
pocket full of change because nothings free

how easy it is to give up hope
in the midst of kids and laundry soap
this spin cycle is no surprise
there's not enough softener for some folks lives

words are spoken without knowing
how well they will be received
at the moment, we're all hoping
they'll fill the void or supply a need

heard but not seen, words tend to lean
on the side we feel is right
hard to keep, we set them free
sometimes words come back to bite

words are spoken much too often
more or less in bitterness
sometimes falling before their calling
leaving little if nothing else

sticks and stones know words alone
can either cure or break a heart
one by one they take their turn
words are where conversations start

Feel free to call me
The Ever-Changing Man
I can turn on a dime
Change on a whim

There's not a direction
I haven't tried
It's not about correction
I just have no spine

It's easy to see
I'm the Ever-Changing Man
The direction I lean
Doesn't come with a plan

Without convictions
It's easily done
No learning of lessons
At every wrong turn

I only look to my needs
The Ever-Changing Man
If it's easy street, I'll dance to the beat
Just strike up the band

For the Ever-Changing Man...
