Misty Meadows
He's from the army and the navy.
His arm above the baby.
Never cared about the way he
Drifted through the ladies.
His daddy's daddy crazy.
Inappropriate and lazy.
He's a star and he's a maybe.
He's the tragedy of lately.

Mud, whiskey, death
and bad debts, the river's
high water, mysterious birds
flying south disappearing
like a youngest daughter,
no good men, bad intentions,
changing seasons, unexplained
pains, all of these are reasons
I've seen good women weeping
after the hardest rains came.

Everyone wants a piece of the sky
Someone told me in a dream
The dome of blue blanketed them
As they lie in green grass

This hand pulled away from that one
(And in a quiet solitude,
that hand slowly moved to that side)
This ached for more than that

Then, someone, somewhere, said it
Everyone wants a piece of the sky
This they know from quiet solitude
To want more is to touch the sky
I watch, I wonder.
I drive the nail on in again.
With every scream she plunders,
An unseen drop falls from miles ahead.
I drive and drive.
I let the wind talk for me instead.
She takes and grows from it.
I watch, I wonder.
I laugh and drive the nail again.
