Strolling, the clouds
Are rolling, they abound
And surely they've found
A purely new sound

But towns have found that clouds come down
In rain, to panes
Their windows are loud

With respect, they see
That without them, they'd be
Lost in the toss
Of a barren dirt sea
Kelley A Vinal Nov 2014
Volcanic eruptions of heated magnanimity
Of which your words so beautifully emulate
Ascending, climbing, yearning to be free
As this *****'s liquid hopes coagulate
You are the fragrant needles on each spruce tree
Surrounding delicately the base of longed-for fate
The occasional, intense craving of anonymity
Only a thinking man's mind to create
You are a glacier of fast-flowing tranquility
The magma lines to caffeinate
Each passing mountain of abnormality
Is never keen to underestimate
Kelley A Vinal Nov 2014
Ice blue, fluorite lights
Brisk and windy Autumn nights
Trees silhouetted against beautiful sights
Lights reaching fantastic UFO heights
A shiver away from icicle, frozen
Buoys float on water in space wide open
Life letting leave on those things broken
Water lapping shores like lava molten
Whispers in rocks surrounding each path
Knowing tales of days-passed and aftermath
A spindly tree feathered with its repeated bath
Moonlight washing away all that's wrath
Not trading here for a million or two gold
You could offer a mansion with no sign of sold
Each passing boat of enlivening cold
Remembers stories of today that were never told
Kelley A Vinal Mar 2017
I guess, like they say
You don't read between
The lines in the light
Ultraviolet or extra bright
But it's not your fault
Not your fight
Explanations from you
Provide
Insight and guidance
Into why
Why I feel I need to be
Just right
It does make me
Pretty tired
Kelley A Vinal Jul 2015
I'm going on a trip
It's a little ways away
Maybe $20 in gas
Will get me there today
To Fornax Chemica
The White Tiger of the West
Hubble's going to catch me
And maybe wish me best
Travelling 60 million light years
May take a little while
But the lovely constellation
Will surely bring a smile
Kelley A Vinal Dec 2014
Picking the patterns in frost-bitten lanterns
Where the light leans to bide each lost-souled phantom
Does the naked eye see
the illuminated rings of Saturn?
Slipping past airplanes, you're fodder-ridden, head-down
Where the sound of darkness echoes like bitter, angry bantam
Does each ice-cold stone of Saturn
deserve to be in its ring?
This is when you find your wing, half-broken, in a sling
Hairline fracture, ****, that stings
This is when you ask yourself, "What does this mean?"
     End.
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Galactic disposition
Relentless exposition
A guided meditation
To harbor one's condition
An earwax candle mission
Removing audible visions
Internal text to bring forth next
The silent-held emissions

Where Galveston sits
Right off the coast
A deeply Southern
Emerald Isle
The seawall stretches
Follow its path
And bathe in the salt
The sharks wouldn't
Mind at all, I'm sure
Silver sand dollar
Razor sharp clams
Dog running along the coast
Trying to catch
The seafoam
But it disappears right away
Still, tongue hanging out
Happy
Sunlight, raining down
Little house, mid-town
Seems
nice

You were alive
Millions of years ago
As the stars
As a tiny amoeba
A primitive zygote
With a group of cyanobacteria dancing
In brackish waters, ready to explode
Onto land with hands and sweat glands
And here you are today
Bipedal, vocal, resourceful and continuing
to evolve
beautifully
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Have you ever left?
Streets decaying, bereft of wonder
General store hours
Posted
Trees, posted
Homes, posted
This town is a ghost town
Like Centralia, Chernobyl, Hashima Island
Complacent in its solitude
While wind rustles the dead trees' souls
And dust collects in endless potholes
One street light flickers to guide the silence
Main Street relentlessly harbors memories
Of feet crossing and ***** tossing
A newspaper stand
A truck for the postman
This town is a ghost town
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Halogen lights are lining the walkway
Bright, bright, bright
Each one
Blinding, but I keep staring
Leading to this place
It's bland
Bland, bland, bland
But I keep coming
Beige filing cabinets
Contain the documents I need
I need them
A paper envelope
Two times a month
I can be relieved
There are others though
Disengaged, but we share a goal
To make it
Until we are gone
Gone, gone, gone
Kelley A Vinal Mar 2016
Carpenter hands
Painter's pants
Shirts stained with
Tough white - marks that
Stump even Billy Mayes
(this poem not endorsed by Oxi-Clean, the easy stain remover)
But that's okay -
It gives you character
The way that each pizza
Crust has a different flavor
Texture, color, thickness
It's all a new experience
Right?
Soft-white glow of your
Phone at night
The window to the left
Letting in the streetlight
It's nice, you and I
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2015
It's cold in here
Like a superstore with those giant freezers
How do they even keep those cold
With no doors
I guess lots of cold air circulation
Or little freezer elves
Happily blowing their icy breath
At the frozen bagels and crinkle-cut fries
But the latter is far less likely
I wonder though
What does the machine look like
The one that makes fries crinkle-cut
I think that's why they made that one show
The one that shows how everything is made
People get curious
And need a distraction
Let's see how
Leather boots
And Moon Pies
Are made today
Hand me a beer
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
How to become a poet?
Write
Your words will spill
Some like water droplets from a faltering faucet
Some like torrential downpour
Leading your mind to flash flood warnings
Your words are wrapped in foil
Waiting to be heated up
And eaten up
Poets are hungry
Kelley A Vinal Nov 2014
Here we are again
Humming songs
That we don’t understand
Everything in the world
In the universe
In the palms of our hands
Technologically advanced
Hop-skip-happy-dance
An industrial trance
To have seen the land
The world
The universe
Before our haphazardly
Set up idiosyncrasies
When the earth had nothing
But herself to please
What was it like?
Kelley A Vinal Sep 2016
Because I don't paint
Words have to be the picture
Nothing but blue skies
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Felled trees and failed deities
In books on shelves of libraries
Hundreds of them - thousands!
This sure is a sight to behold

Information, new and old
A rustic smell
Book mold?
Regardless, this is exhilarating
Kelley A Vinal Dec 2015
Honey-flavored icicles
In a wintry, wind-blown stand
Whispers wander
Waiting longer
A wrinkle in my hand, I can't
Imagine rays of ultraviolet
Infrared
I see
Long lost, bones tossed
But blue shines light at sea
She smiles, crows are flying
They're landing at her feet
A carrion
She carries on
Until her final seat
It's nice
The light, the red is bright
Emitting blue and green
Life is this, all that is
Much deeper than it seems
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2015
When you take a step outside
And you're hit with the force of inspiration
It makes you feel like you fell off a swing
And landed on your back
    but in a good way
Beautiful and exciting
A break in the clouds
Isn't just that - it's a turtle, or a boat, or a dragon, or a dress
You're filled with inspiration
Imagination
And you see
That elm tree growing in front of the building
Becomes alive
He speaks, he thrives
Each leaf giving the air a high-five
Happy to just be
The elm tree across the street
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Leatherbound
Tannins have branded
My fingertips
But the steel still feels and heals
right
I'm at home with this
This wooden body
And slender neck of burnt mahogany
Each string a page in the next great novel
It just hasn't been written yet
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2015
To zenith we are
Moving closer and closer -
Perihelion
Kelley A Vinal Apr 2015
Elephantine swirls
Careful, unraveling threads
Bookcase, bookcase
Zig-zag treads
Vaulted, deep, brown and steep
Held by wicker
And woods and peach
Stones uneven, pathway in
Phrases painted with
Juniper and gin
Kelley A Vinal Feb 2016
Gravitationally bound
I guess I'm stuck here for now
I'll count all these stripes
I'd call it a tiger - the king of the savanna
Space's vacuum is expansive, all right
It smells of ammonia
How clean it must be!
But this atmosphere is moving
Too quickly for me
As fast as it spins
Its intense, gassy winds
Are making it hard to breathe
Still, this orb of storms has a lovely form
And I really hate to leave
But on the way home
I'll be flying by Mars
I'll see where this journey can lead
Kelley A Vinal Aug 2015
The marina was lifeless -
just boats, no captains
It was cold, but
nice - you and I

Like a campfire, maybe
Except you didn't smell
like lapsang souchong tea
More like honey, something

sweet, like devil's cake baking
Your touch - an equatorial sunbeam
It burnt, but I think the tan
looks good
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2017
they cannot keep their head straight
i can't say it's bad
my eyes are closed to listen

eyes clenched shut, fingers spread wide
like light from their teeth
i am drawn to this
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2015
There once thrived a hive near the creek
Bees came in and out every week
But one day a bat
In the hands of some *******
Caused the hive to substantially leak
Kelley A Vinal Mar 2016
Where am I right now
Light flowing
Like a waterfall
It's beautiful - stars are the size of my
Fingernails
Even up close
I pick them up, and put them back
In a backdrop of black, it's lovely
Foreign languages spoken
Softly, low
Voices like cream
Whatever this place is -

It must be a dream
Kelley A Vinal Mar 2016
Nestled in the mountains
Like a tree, birch or pine
Definitely a tall one
But kind of short, too
Medium-sized, I suppose
Two windows, glass
Seaglass, a pretty blue
Kind of green
Teal-colored, I think
Cerulean might be a better
Descriptor
Stone stuck together
The outside is pretty
Cobblestone, not brick
Like it was made in the Middle Ages
Or maybe the Stone Age
Yeah, that makes more sense
It's pretty here
Like a sunny day
Or a rainy evening
One of the two
Or both
I don't know
I just don't
But I want
To be here
Kelley A Vinal Dec 2014
Train tracks lead to predetermined places
Different directions, different faces
Exist to the right, exit left
Fluttering in one's peripheral, leaving traces
Daylight passed, nights so moonlight bereft
Of cloud cover to be cloven, the unconcerned brace
In the sky above what is known as home
Wherefore, each break shepherds individuals
As still as a garden gnome
Stoic as a preserved throne
Phlegmatic as a slowly melting icicle
In a cave that no one knows about
Exist to the right, life is what is left
Learning and yearning for that so disconcerting
Yet the biggest and most impactful
Inspiration
To live, not only to exist
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Not a bird in sight, nor insect, nor squirrel
Loud silence lacks cars and the usual whirl
These winds are like whistles
Through the fingers of trees
Closed windows are pummeled
By torrential pings

These mushroom spores and petrichor
Are easy to inhale together
Kelley A Vinal Aug 2015
Underneath a moonlit
sonata, you and I
Beethoven's audience
A love, a wonder, alive

You're curious - as am I
Your soft breaths - I've learned
a new lullaby

I think I'll sleep well tonight
Kelley A Vinal Aug 2015
On the clouds
I lie
Candlelight
Illuminates the night like
a firefly
I am deep, far-fallen
into the land of sleep
Mars' volcanic activity
Giving light
To my dreams

I am calm
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2015
Rust and red consumed
A planet pumping iron
Forging RNA

A quick collision
Blasting out extremophiles
Pleased to meet you, Earth
Kelley A Vinal Dec 2016
Slow, why are you walking so slow
It's in between
The lines, you're reading it just fine
You're fine, but won't you
Please close the door?

It's cold outside
I can see
The waves are coming from your keys
It's locked, it's cold, but
Won't you come in?

Your fingers line
And twirl, like frost
The cold unfurls
I've come
To you
Please close the window
Kelley A Vinal Feb 2016
Nocturnal, the sky
A beautiful night
And the air is calm

The stars up above
Are incredibly bright
And the insects are calm

I lay on my back
In the cold, wet grass
And my mind is calm

I cross my legs
While a raven tends her eggs
And the night is gone
Kelley A Vinal Mar 2015
Well, this mercury has broken
Each piece of glass inside my bones
For words are beautiful when spoken
And when written as a tome
I'm done with taking this for mine
Time's proven countless times before
You loaned me lights to fight this shadow
To not believe it anymore
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2016
If I were a starfish
I'd lose my bipedal traits
Sticking on the ocean
Floor all day
If I were a bat
Living in a musty cave
I'd gain a great ability
Catching all sorts
Of frequencies
If I were a kangaroo
I'd be sticking all sorts of things
In my stomach pouch
Bouncing on my giant feet
If I were an alien
I'd come to Earth and try the sweets
Cake and donuts, candy
What a treat!
If I were a particle
Of nothing but a little dust
I'd blow around all sorts of trees
Floating along on a brisk Winter breeze
I am a human, though
Which is cool in lots of ways
We have names for all the days
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2015
I sit in silence
To sing the sounds of a sitar
It's hard
I can't really do that
That "pew weeeew" sound
I sound more like an alarm
I bet it could definitely wake people up
If I were loud enough
But my voice doesn't carry well
Regardless, why would I want to disturb sleep?
When it's something that people
So desperately need
I guess to be alive
Being bound in this metal cast
I bet I could program my voice to do that
To sound just like a sitar
But it would probably sound slightly
Mechanical
Methodical
And that's not what I'm going for here
Kelley A Vinal Nov 2014
The journey of opening minds to dreams
Watching life hallowed by superficial means
Instead, peace is to follow gentle streams
Harking sounds so delicate, as moonlight beams
Strive not to conduct life with expectations, as if it were a train
Following a path so perfectly laid
Using an umbrella instead of trusting the rain
Using natural existence as reason for bane
Do not fear the storms, as they have existed for far longer than we
Revere instead the intensity and power we see
The serenity of tree-form tranquility
Sometimes, the luster of nature brings one to their knees
Kelley A Vinal Aug 2015
Romantic, isn't it?
The giant, blue, ice-cold
Air flurries, quickly
Hydrogen and helium
Methane ice - like an oddly-
flavored slushie, likely unpalatable
But surely nice to see
So far from Helios' reach
A blizzard of cerulean rushes across
A mass so great
It would require Herculean strength
To move her but an inch
Mathematically predicted
And there she was
A beautiful, azure conclusion
To our solar system
Kelley A Vinal Jul 2017
Memories left by supernovae
Beautiful, colorful
Names like Cassiopeia
Calvera
I fell to your surface
And my matter was rendered almost instantly
Into my surroundings
And we became one
I can tell that I can't leave
I can't reach escape velocity
Half the speed of light
Unfathomable
I am here forevermore
But at least
Your micrometer-thick atmosphere should
Last me a good, long time.
hopefully we don't collide with another neutron star because i've heard scary things about gamma ray bursts
Kelley A Vinal Apr 2015
O, my dearest and most enticing caffeine
Without you, the world would be grey
For each time you reach for my heart
It both flutters and beckons the day
So generous and giving, thou doth art
The simmering sound of your can intoxicates me
Carbonation so sweet; you give me motivation all week
To continue this molecular love story
Kelley A Vinal Nov 2016
O, dearest and most capable coffee cup
How I couldn't bear to be without you
Your smooth ceramic
Cradling my mornings like fog in the distance
How empty you are 'fore the coffee is done
I can't help but feel the pang of bittersweet longing
Yet, when full, your silken, brittle body
Becomes the most fantastic vessel
Housing the warmth of my soul
O, dearest and most capable coffee cup
Were it not for you, I'd be much more a lump
Than a regular human being
And forevermore, you shall be
My greatest friend
Kelley A Vinal Jun 2017
O, most wonderful and brittle coffee cup
How I have forsaken thee
For a fortnight 'fore now
My hands became butter under your
Beautiful, wondrous weight
The sound still resonates in my ears
I have broken thee
Aghast, I am
And forevermore
Shall be
loss and heartbreak
Kelley A Vinal Jul 2015
O, I seek ye, paperclips
How you so kindly bind my documents
In the most orderly of fashions
O, greatest and most convenient
Loops of metal -  are ye sentient?
For if you were, I would surely state
My pure and deepest gratitude -
For your unending, ever-sacrificing
Services to my matters of
Organization ne'er go unnoticed
Kelley A Vinal Sep 2015
Had there been a pipe *****
Where the melancholia sits
It would have played
Instead
It felt glass between its teeth
And grasped
The hairs in its head
Danced within
The room of the dead
Shadows friendly, alive with dread
While vultures laughed
Kicking away
The offal, the bread
They wanted
its bones to pick
Instead
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
The past, too often, intervenes
With thoughts of forward productivity
The solution is not to push it behind you
But to use it to be even better
And to learn - to be thrilled to be here
And have great joy in the fact
That sometime in the future
You will experience such happiness, and such jubilance
A small moment, or a wonderful day

It really will be okay
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Sometimes, I just want to sit and write
Or read and play
My guitar all night
Sometimes, I want to run outside
Or speak and say
The words on my mind
Sometimes, I want to bathe and sing
To the beat of the flame
As it's flickering

But through everything
I want to learn
and be
in wonder of the world
as it's rotating
Kelley A Vinal Oct 2015
Bright as a quasar -
Your smile, your eyes
Dancing with Orion
Lighting up the night sky
An asteroid of ice
A volcano hot on Mars
Your charm - a true delight
As I gaze into the stars
I've come to find myself
In awe of many things
The wonder of the universe
And the marvelous life it brings
Though we are all made of stardust
From many years ago
In one thing do I trust -
Yours had the brightest glow
Kelley A Vinal May 2015
Paintbrushes and bulldozers
Canvas and land
Creativity and destruction
Each done with mans' hand
