Give me rest before I fight again
I beg a moment's peace.
It's too soon to brawl my friend
My hearts not yet at ease.

The recent wounds are still too sore
I crave her presence still.
I'm not yet ready to wage this war
For the last one left me ill.

I cannot fight again so empty
I'm drained from a war of romance.
I want no other to try and tempt me
I was happier in her trance.

These others hold no appeal to me
They haven't her charm or looks.
What we had was chemistry
The kind only found in soppy love books.

For any other
I will not care
Or dote
Or laugh at their jokes.

For any other
I will not want
Or trust
Or look at with lust.

For any other
I'll not accept
The love from their hearts
For she has left mine in shards.
Appreciate feedback
I am uncomfortable
Here in my comfortable life,
Churning through the days
A bewildered automaton.
Appointments and should haves and could haves elude me
Nothing's worth bothering with, really
Except...
Except...
Except...

I am not unhappy, I just don't fit
Into my own life.
It's like someone dropped me, awkwardly, into these clothes
And told me where to go
And what to do
And how to eat
And meet, and greet,
And somehow, I'm good at it,
Not being me,
Perhaps the discomfort
Gives me an interesting edge.

So, where is my real life,
And who is living it, then?
Is she as bewildered as me?
Does she abhor or adore
her worshippers?
Is she at home on the stage?
As she sings and recites and receives her applause
Is she wishing she could sing a completely different song?
If we met
Would we envy each other,
Or scare each other half to death?

Sitting on a park bench
cutting up a pear
Having me a talk with
a guy who wasn't there
People passing by, they
all gave me funny stares
But I just kept on talking
to the guy who wasn't
there
Then a man in uniform
said 'son come on with me.
You’re scaring all these
people with this friend
they cannot see.
I’ll take you to a special
place and they’ll give you
lots of care
And they’ll help you with
this fantasy of talking to
the air'
I said 'well OK officer
I’ll gladly come with you
But what about the thousand
folks all sitting in the pew?
I saw them at St. Timothy's
all packed in like sardines
Talking to some other guy
that no one's ever seen
So I think it would be prudent
And I think it's only fair
That you send a couple
buses for them people
over there.
Then take the great big lot
of us yes all one thousand
one
Over to that special place
you mentioned in line one
Or maybe it was line thirteen
in truth I do not care
As long as we can all converse
with the guy who isn't there.

Pablo Neruda
I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine
