Anything You Invent is Art
John Bartholomew Jan 2019
It's mediums cover an untethered mass of production
And yes, it usually just comes from a bit of fun
Kids in the class to a scratch in the sand
From learning the recorder onto a rock and roll band
See it as tosh, well class it as you will
Marvel at its psychedelia whilst swallowing the bitterest pill
A bedroom left in ruin from a woman, hardly feminine
I forget her name, oh there we go, nice work Tracey Emin
Rose tainted spectacles for the ones we love and desire
In reality, probably better off in the fire
But don't knock it until you have tried it as you have no right to really speak,
An artists soul can encapsulate a moment even it is dreary and bleak
Pick up that pen sat by your side and have a squiggle,
Look at things, objects, people, best place? Probably Lidl
The odder the human the better the detail to find and pick
Start to build a portfolio, everything has to start brick by brick
As,

That Madly British Way
John Bartholomew Jan 2019
What is made can usually be traced back here
From the car to an independent hops bar,
Serving its very own mind blowing beer
We are seen as a disruption, a small disturbance out on our own at sea
Ruling the world and the oceans years ago, ships crafted and made from the Royal British oak tree
Let our language be spoken at every outpost no matter where we did sail
Not all stories of heroism and splendor as some were deceitful, leaving many worried and plenty frail
Places we did not conquer still stand strong without the British rule
To think we could conquer Ireland, oh such fools
But the British way has set paths for many to follow
Austin Powers, Yanks with English accents through to Sleepy Hollow
From the telephone, the toothbrush onto the television
All used throughout the world and perfected to precision
Hate us for winning two timely World Wars
We'd all be speaking German yah, Zwei plus zwei ist vier!
Music from the 60's set the kids all in a spin
It carried on throughout our time, daft lyrics still make me grin
So don't knock us for having a mind of our own
Whilst people sneer and mock our ways, we always had our very own tone
As it is what we are and I hope it will stay,

Lollipop Lady Blues
John Bartholomew Jan 2019
It doesn't take much, for me to be late in the morning
A bad nights sleep, another day at work, it can be oh so boring
20 minutes, does it really matter, in the grand scheme of things
Jump in the car, radio on,
Same DJ with the X-Factor wannabes wearing their bling
Its a short trip but can still be delayed once more
Further down the road by a woman who makes my head sore....

Hitting the roundabout 2 miles from anywhere
The traffic backs up to give us all a timely scare
What on Earth could delay us on this trip to a place of ethical sanction
As without work our lives would halt without function
Bills to pay and food to buy, we need the income from some money tree
What is holding me up as already late,
Maybe set my alarm earlier but hey, what will be will be
The slow jaunt on the bumper to bumper ride
Its only 10 minutes more but time is not on my side.....

And there she is,
My delay
Luminous in stature holding the road like shes some traffic God
Chatting away to the ladies as if she's PC Plod
Holding that lollipop on her black and yellow stick
She's really starting to get on my wick
Some of us have places to be old lady like she even cares
Kids crossing the road, go play Chicken, like they'd even dare
Really, all in all, she is doing a good job
And there's me rushing and acting like a bit of a......wally!
As if I did knock a child over I'd forever be sorry
Even when it rains she puts up her brolly
Stop the parent and kids from always getting wet
I suppose in the end she is the safer bet
Maybe I will always be late but nothing I can't sort with a brew,
Instead of getting,

An Oasis of Song
John Bartholomew Jan 2019
That guilt ridden riff of a Rock'n'Roll Star opened up your heart
It ingrained, slowly, with more 6 string lullaby's rolling from a brand new start

Electronica and the New Wave fading away, something new on our horizon was needed
A rip-off from The Beatles and a caution now to be heeded

5 lads from Manchester and an attitude to boot
Not the greatest of musicians but born with a swagger, the lead singer acting up like a skinny gangly brute

****** on stage but that didn't matter, singing the wrong lyrics but had the indie girls a flutter
They rolled off the charts like songs born in time
We all need a singalong with a song that easily rhymes

From Wonderwall to Some Might Say, we got our moneys worth out of these lads
But like everything in time, it fizzled out as another fad

Britpop was king for 3 or 4 years, until the Roller in the pool disappointed us all
I'd never eaten a Magic Pie but if it tasted like the rest of these songs it wasn't worth a mention
All the kids waiting for (Whats the Story) Morning Glory's follow up with 2 years of wasted tension

What followed that I really now cant remember, as it stunk to high heaven
Something about not believing the truth from a group of struggling once high heathens

The odd song stuck like a niggling little struggle
Songbird through to a few others onto The Importance of Being Idle
But the days of ***, drugs and rock'n'roll lays in the past of memories now starting to fade
But if you remember them treasure that thought as those really were the days,

Mixtape Memories

The C30
The C60
The C90
Depends how much thought you have
If it was just to get them into bed or real true love
The songs had to mean something in one way or another
If just to say sorry or to get them under your covers
A lyric
A phrase
A night that got you in a daze
Times of deleting and re-recording
A song not to long that could sound a bit boring
Something that had a beat, a pulse, to stop them from snoring
The tape
The CD
The download
For what was mixed will now never be remembered
It sits in the lost drawer with photos our schoolmates did lend us
Nothing to play it on as it won't mix with iTunes
A 90's tradition now lost in our bedrooms,

People are Savages
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
Our only planet and look what we have done
Litter, from such critters, known as us
How dare we ruin our one and only home
Caked in plastic, detergent and animals so rare we only have bones
What have we become
This can only be summed up in one
People are one thing and one thing only
Savages
Utter savages
I will state it again
How dare we,

People are savages

The Limp Handshake
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
It tells a story, the grip of such men
You can give it a mark from one up to ten
The flaccid none particular of whom you might as well forget
From the strong and sturdy and pleased to meet you, much more of a safe bet
For a hand with five fingers that has no strength will hold up no life long wills
It will crumble and fail at the first sign on danger, never willing to foot the bills
But a rigorous grasp with a smile and heartily clasp is a better hand to follow
Not a weak and wet lettuce, whose hand felt like a cretins, mostly hiding in the shadows
As life can often take us on a path led by utter dimwits
But choose a journey not laid out by those who you just don't seem fit.

It's ok, I've never heard of me either
I'm what's called 'back-up' in case a famous one loses its tether
You think the big man relies wholly on the ones that you've heard
They're just for the kiddies tales baby, don't be so absurd
There's Splodger, Spliffer, Ransack and me,
To name but a few with names that don't agree
There's Woody and Wobbler with Randy and Tiddler
You'll get the jist with the names that have been called here
All stood out the back after the main ones have been chosen and cleared
Kids don't want to hear of the ones who break all the rules
Sitting around all day stinking of their own stools
For this isn't the way of a tale to be told
If written in books then none would be sold
As I am the just the Reindeer waiting in the wings
Credit to Rudolph and the other ones who's names the children sing,
As I am happy to be just waiting here, stuck between the shadows
As time will tell if Rodney fits a story, that all will someday follow

A Rebel Without a Pause
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
Causing trouble for the sake of it
Stampeding through life without a thought to think and sit
Mumbled words that when heard offend
Sitting on the fence is a place for the quiet to send
Rampaging on occasions that can get on his wick
Sometimes wrong but they are wounds he can now lick
Sitting back and thinking it through
Maybe Johnny was better as a boy named Sue
Not my place they say but I'm allowed my opinion
I'll cry if I want even if I'm not cutting those onions
Born as you are it's up to them if they really want the change
Sometimes its a shock with looks that can be strange
From girl to boy to woman to man
You want to break those rules because you really can
when acted by the legendary man that was James Dean
This is how you want the world for you to be seen
A rebel without a cause
I don't stop under your set rules
Set by years of the norm and played out by fools
As I am,

A Rebel Without a Pause

THIS IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL WAITING ON PLATFORM 3. YOUR TRAIN IS CURRENTLY RUNNING 30 MINUTES LATE. WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

Oh great.
And this to make up for always being late.
Maybe its fate.
A love that was never meant to be.
Something that only the Gods of time can see.
A text.
What can I do but maybe make-up ***
A text
A wait
Now a reply of hate
Flowers in the bin and I won't bother
She'd be better with a more reliable lover
A girl with no watch and an absence of time
If available then join the back of the line
Time to defect and walk back down those stations steps
Always another girl so what the heck
There in the back ground whilst kicking some stones
The noise of an announcement far away from the stations tones....

WE WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGISE FOR THE RECENT MISCOMMUNICATION ANNOUNCED REGARDING PLATFORM 3. THAT TRAIN IS NOW PULLING IN AND IS ON TIME. AGAIN, WE APOLOGISE FOR THIS ERROR.

Who would have thought what a mess this ended up in

No rules just lies
Some even on the street having a public cry
All we can do now is just try

I love this great land for all that its worth
From its music and history to football and its birth
Now we just fight over a decision asked by DC and his smirk

All we hear on the news is a choice of which way to turn
Article 50 may as well have been burned
We now need a leader to guide this ship with a hand that is stern

Decisions, settlement, judgement
Still up in the air that needs some stable guidance
Who's to be next to blame and sail to safer climates

As for now we just don't know
Who holds the dice and who's next to throw
For this land needs to come together and head for a new vision

As the last thing we need is this now,

Drunken Party Dancing
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
If you want to show them what your like then do
(Think about it now)
Let you be you
(Don't)
Get up and dance, ignoring the few
(Please don't)
You've been here 2 weeks, it's good to be true
(Seriously, listen to that voice in future)
The MD's wife looks alright, put out your hand
(What have I just done)
Get up my love, never mind him, let's dance
(Oh God)
Put your hands out to this beat, be it 60's or trance
(Seemed like fun)
Now I'm thinking back to what the hell have I done
(I told you)
A few drinks on the company bill, was only a bit of fun
(how can I avoid work on Monday?)
The start of the new week and what have I to come
(Are they smirking still at my boldness)
Sit down, computer on, Inbox half full
(OK, not so bad)
Usual junk and the odd serious email but there it is, lingering
(Let's hope he's in a good mood)
See me at 10, we need to have a chat

False Death
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
Death
  It happens
   No avoiding it
      Who's gonna miss you?
Well lets stay and find out
Fake it and hide at the funeral
And see who really cared for you fool
Who sheds a tear or who's just for a beer
Your jokes were risky but with good humour
Some walked away but no one would really tell ya
You larked around and sometimes pushed the limits
Well that's just life and that's just the way it sometimes is
Never to grow up and still acting like one of the daft kids
Living life without a care oh yes ignorance really is bliss
even my neighbour turned up over my Uncle and Aunt
Surprising as he hated my music well my Robert Plant
Well even the Gooner turned up as football is respect
He wouldn't even bite even if it was on a daft text
So this is the showing that I have amount too
Me stuck in a bush watching this rabble cry
I'm actually flattered that they even tried
Should I reveal myself to spoil the gig
Just to show me to be a selfish pig
I'm honoured I really truly am
              Shame about the sandwiches
              Pickled onions with Spam
            Think I'll stay alive
             As the foods bad
              No party now
               So overrated
               Is death

An Idiot Like Me
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
Bland
Like a plate of frozen peas for dinner
Work
Everyday until you die just trying to be above that person next to you
Holidays
Every year to that same villa in Spain
Car
Volvo
Good brakes
Safety No.1
I sigh in boredom of it all
The sight in which we see life is a contrast between us all
And that channel of tuning just isn't for me
Say the odd stupid thing and regret it for days or years
Date that person who scares you blind and brings you to tears
Make the decision that is stupid and plainly wrong
But that's how I roll man, to a different song
I've been a prat at the best of times but that's what makes it fun
Soaking up the rays with no cream in the summer sun
Always a risk taker living life on the edge
Hey, that's the way I live, a self committed pledge
People look at me and wonder why,
I look back and tell them well at least I tried
As this is a life to live so spread your wings and not sit in the tree
Sometimes we have to make mistakes to prove whats right, hence
The world will always need,

Delicious with Casserole
John Bartholomew Dec 2018
We all have our favourite flavours, be it what you will
Add some stock or a can of soup, anything but chilled
Pick a pack from the shelf,
Carrots,
Celery,
Turnips,
A clove of garlic,
All good for your health
A side scoop of fresh mash, potatoes mixed with butter
Bought from the farmer down the road, Mr Smith with the tedious stutter
Straight to bakery for some bread, to soak up that lovely mix
All the ingredients clumped together, every box it does tick
Served with a feeling of a homemade dish, pretty simple when you know how
Delicious and tender and a joy to eat, especially that winter has come now
It warms you up, puts a glow to your cheeks, feels good and livens the soul
Now dunk that bread and sip that wine,

What we are supposed to do

Its an unwritten book
Each page blank for you to write
Prophecy, gluten for punishment, entirety
It is what you will
Footsteps to follow
Not beg steal and borrow
This life is yours
Make it what you will
Swerve that curve ball from paying the final bill
Trickiness
Stickiness
Sometimes were in a cosmic muddle
But always just be you
Don't follow the path set in stone as that's
What we are supposed to do

They tell a thousand words whatever's in the frame
If its Warhol down to a flower on a wall
That picture says one thing to some
And sometimes nothing at all

Get into the mind of the artist who framed it
Sitting by the canal just painting boats and eating biscuits
There was no great mystery behind that picture of yours
Any excuse from doing the household chores

Did Mona Lisa smile or was she thinking of something else
She may have been bored and just called from the street
Imagining what 2 nearby birds had just tweet
Soon on Da Vinci's bed, or on her knees and off her feet

The imagination is to anybody's discretion
Take it as far as you like, its up to your impression
Just know there is a line that we try to avoid
Of indecency and discretion as that is sometimes too rude

Middle Age, Man...
John Bartholomew Nov 2018
Approaching like a soul with a bad news update
Small things gradually start to appear
Time,
Loss,
Fear,
That first grey hair on your head
Now showing up in places that you dread
Pants,
Chest,
Nostrils,
No way man,
Impossible
The beat of the radio flicks from Radio 1 to 2
Don't try and deny it, you know this to be true
Now Elbow,
Mike and the Mechanics
Nothing wrong with a bit of Elvis Presley
Now this is getting scary
I'm going to need a Harley or a soft top soon
Impress the ladies that I'm still in tune
Chinos,
Loafers,
A semi grey goatee
Oh man,
I hate becoming an oldie

Through the Storm
John Bartholomew Nov 2018
I've been hit
All of us have but in different ways
Depends on how you recover
Waking up and that feeling of utter dread
Where do I look, are the answers in some book
The wife may know or do I ask my lover
A turning point where all is seen in a brand new way
The justice, the injustice, the must have must haves
I'm only here once
A front bigger than Brighton, always on the blag

Maybe I deserved that thump of unfair life
As been a naughty boy and relished in the past
God has his ways, I'll catch you one day you *******

But the hill has a summit as for which I now climb
I toppled, I lent to far, I took my eyes from the prize and crashed that ******* car
But these matters are just a hiccup, a step in the wrong direction
Strive on young man,
Having eliminated those who now do not care
Throw at you what they want, spread your tales online,
For social media is there for us all to bear

But no,
Hold that light of what really still can come
As you ignore those mutters from the downtrodden and those on the everyday rat-run
The horizon has a future yet to be discovered now feeling almost new born
Hold your head up high, banish the clutter that really doesn't matter as you carry on,

Service Station
John Bartholomew Nov 2018
A light that shines when all others are out
That midnight treat, an escape, a desperation technique
Conversations with an immigrant whose stories are bone chillingly scary
Now keeping tabs on a fridge full of Solero's just wondering if his daughter escaped the screams, the gunfire and if she's now unknowingly buried
The drunk arrives, ***** now gone, gawping at the top shelf
Tried it on, alone tonight, 2 minutes with page 7 just might help
Dome roundabout, A41, a place to stop, from Harrow to Tring
Filling up on a Wednesday, hoping the same man isn't now serving
Air in the sky now 50p to fill the tyres that let us travel
If it wasn't for these rubber soles our lives would be stuck in gravel
But you're hungry and are willing to pay the price for a Ginsters roll
No change for the bridge named after our Queen, how dare they give it a toll
It stands out bright that expensive castle on the hill
Ten pence a litre more to fill the car but hey, you just want to get home and your willing to foot the bill

350 million years and then, ta da!
The steam engine
Yeah, that took time
OK, so there was nobody about for a while
Maybe God isn't as clever as he thinks
Dinosaurs
Mass global deconstruction in its weather conditions
Ice-Age
Demolition on Planet Earth
Lets start again
Humans
They'll be fun!
Throw some religion into the mix
Oh, and jealousy, a good story needs some jealousy
And blood
And weapons
Where is this ship heading
Phase 3?
Could well be on the horizon soon
God needs to whistle to a different tune
Maybe were just a chapter in an all beings stupid little book
Whats next
Lets a have a peek, come on, just a little look

Bowels of every life are made in this department
Think about it
The movement, the progression, the here after
From humans to dogs, trains on a track then the newt to the frog
This region is overlooked, so much can happen here
Its what makes us move, thrive on and even shed the odd tear
A ******, from some you don't trust, a night of lust
Needed by some, just a bit of fun, a kid hits you like a ton
For it is not just us who move on from this region
The engine, the hair pin, every corner a story
Keep the vehicle on track, life's journey does not lack
Those moments of grandeur that sometimes bore me
We rally on, just keep on moving, this machine always accelerating
Legs are running, if still not working, the brain always thinking
The depths of mortality, the human psyche, keeps on breeding
Even our mode of transport, the way we move, all has its engine
A beast that roars, if between our legs to a plane that can soar
Pipes that can fuel, carry this source to the brain that controls
Stephenson's the Rocket to the phone in our pocket
Machines that roll paper for the game that end up as our ticket
All have a base, a frame, what is known as the building blocks of life,
As we all stem from what is our essentially known as,

Sprawling, this planet's skin
Dotted on the view, clouds, never ending sky
Birds don't reach these limits, a land of pilots flying high
It's a massive wonder to God's and the like
The aeroplanes engine, a miracle in itself
I don't think an all powerful being ever imagined us taking this crazy hike
Yet here we fly above any bird in the sky
Wondrous, even plain mad, what we can put our minds too
As we do have the power, the incredulous nerve to even question some of God's will
Bring us the minds, the ticking over of this might work and we will foot this bill
Flight is not just for the now dead dinosaurs of a million years ago
It's for the now, it's time in motion, adapt and overcome
Just give us the those dice, hey presto, what next in this unforseen century's throw
Other planets still await our touch
Lets draw up a plan, we'll talk and comprise, we could do it over lunch
As nothing is impossible when you put your mind to it
There will be time travel next
Once the Delorean is kitted out
Don't tell me that the odds are low as we conjure these numbers and wipe our brow
For we must move onto the future of even the past once this machine is ready to roll
We will meet the kings, the queens, and even ourselves then God I'm afraid will finish this perilous, unwanted travelling soul

Dig a little deeper, lets see what we can find
Rumours from another mouth, this person's past is a goldmine
Nosey are we, trying to find a deficit in their will
Social media the perfect launchpad, to see if they fit the bill
Who do they know and where do they live, are they on the dole in some ****** flat getting ****** in front of their kids,
Or am I entirely wrong, they have an outstanding job, a Porsche on the drive, thank God for this social dig
For we now have the tools, the hidden prosperity to judge, without even meeting the persons content
Oh hang on, wait, they dated way back at school
That was 20 years ago, surly they have changed,
Let's not be made to look a fool
It is in our psyche, this need to know, if it's there then take a look

Poem of a Lonely Man
John Bartholomew Oct 2018
Lonely on a summers night at home
A touch, a laugh, sick of being alone
No number to fill this space on his mobile phone
That card he found on the bench in the park
As random as throwing a picked up stone
Working every hour that this God sends
A TV life has it's perfection, everybody has a friend
Maybe it's authors have yet to meet a man like me
A space yet to comprehend
She sounds nice on the call but that's how it's supposed to be
The perfect girl would never just fall from the nearest tree
Money in the wall for a stack of our queens head
Cash only my love for these knickers on the floor and 10 minutes in your bed
Life has it's imperfection and for these he's sometimes flawed
But your only here once and a long time dead,
6 feet under Earths floor,

Poem of a Lonely Man.

Far from Fit
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
Monday
Its going to start
The diet
I'll try it
No
I'll blast it
How hard can it be
Nutrition
Carbs
Vitamins C through to Z
Go for a run
That'll be fun
Join a boot-camp 3 times a week
10 burpys
10 timed runs
10 press-ups
Bring it on
The short lived enthusiasm starts to wain
I work in an office everyday on the train
The mornings hurt
Oh the pain!
I'll try it again when the urge starts to ******
When the clothes start to pinch and its time for a wiggle
Everyday life just getting in the way
When the office is going for a lunchtime run I'd rather just sit
Bring on that day when its just a click of the wrist
Yeah, I know, whatever,

Far from Fit

Losing the plot (Sorry)
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
Quiet, an observer, not part of the scene
Flowing in the background like a river serene
Supping the irish stout, sometimes with a dash of black
I never meant to offend, a car crash now I lose my head, not the me of old, very out of trend
The loss of control to parts now out of reach
Learning as a kid, the facts of life, now an impossible body to teach
I can't stop it, this loss of infuriate rage
It's not the man I am, now living life on a completely different stage
If God had a wand I wish he would wave it calmly, cooly, and fix my frustrated ways
For this is not me, that once quiet man,
I don't enjoy this life any more, I wish it just a faze
And for it to just stop, as sometimes I think
I am,

I Laugh at You Death
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
Avoid it.
No chance
Swerve it.
Done that.
A purpose to the day.
Don't die
Sniffing so close at every second you play
You crossed a road. Tick
You flew in a helicopter. Tick
Jumped from a plane for charity tied to another man. Tick
You even held a python around your neck just to impress the kids. Tick
So what you got left then.
Bring it on.
A disease just because the others failed
Take me from the inside and leave me decrepit and frail
Yeah?
Is that all you've got?
Coming in at another angle to rid me of my life.
A losers choice as you're out of options.
Come on.
You've been practising for an eternity for this day.
Something a bit more manly to rid me of my stay,
You don't scare me as I breath my last breath,
You faceless, soulless, nothing better to do with your day coward,

I laugh at you death

Just one more question...
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
Interrogation.  A question. A short story of what you have done.
Or not.
The truth is only known by one.

So you didn't see Francis Cooper on the 6th?
Although you had the date marked on your calendar?
Cancelled.
OK......OK
"Thinking"
Its just that Mrs Cooper's gardener said he saw your car that day.
On the drive.
For over an hour.
You deny this?
"Thinking"
No. No...My wife. My wife borrowed the car that day. Just a mix up
Your wife knew Francis Cooper too?
Yes. She does her nails every Tuesday.
OK.
"Thinking"
The Tuesday was the 5th I believe Mr Sanders.
"Thinking"
Sorry. Yes, she changed dates so, you know, like I say, just a mix up.
OK...... OK.
Slowly walking away,

Oh, just one more question...

A Poem to a Younger Me
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
You lived it large, out all the time, the way it should be
Thursdays, student night
Fridays, pub by 5 pm, staggered in at 5 am
Saturdays, still hanging but forced by your friends
Sunday, a day of rest, your mums lunch and on the mend

Late twenties and its catching up with you
Thursdays, thinking about Friday
Friday, quick pint after work and home
Saturdays, a day shopping for that new phone
Sundays, a game on the box now lowering the tone

Scratching around into the tail end of your thirties
Thursday, not even thirsty
Fridays, project to finish now at work
Saturdays, the kids look at you with that naughty smirk
Sundays, ah Sundays, now already thinking of Monday

It catches up on you when you don't even see it
Time, age, this uncontrollable stage, already written by the poets
Live it while you can because it soon catches up
Be that kid, own that night, strut that stuff
Because its something you will not see coming,

(Sometimes, It's hard you know, being this **** good looking)

Cute since a baby and on through my teens,
kids on the street asking where had I been
Realising once at school, the girls all now a flutter
Some of them knowing they're just no good, go date that kid with the stutter

For I am talk of the year, the boys wanting some of the action
Not in a way of fancy or love, just for the girls to have a reaction
A riot on his first week called freshers, talk of the town in his uni years,
Sleeping around, knowing who's with who, he knows he'll fit right in here

5 years gone, a first in his topic, so popular no matter what he's done
Time to grow up, whats around the corner when leaving this fun

A model like wife, 3 kids and CEO at Nike,  one of Gods special people
And then it creeps up, a story of such luck, his situation as sticky as treacle

Uni funds all corrupt, a loophole in what he hadn't figured,
Some things you really shouldn't trigger
Was a good idea at the time, his 3 friends didn't mind, one over on the Government, it doesn't get much bigger

But that wasn't to be, 6 months in would be sore, just for a little tax evasion
Up in court, 2 years was the score, this really wasn't part of his equation

Cheekbones chiselled with the looks of a model
The wing leaders gather round, excited in a huddle
He had heard the stories of what could happen being trapped in prison,
But seriously guys,

I'm just too good looking (for this to happen)

Magpie
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
They circle, surveying the scene, spying that morsel to the very last bean
If it glitters it's worth a nab, anything new that shines and still has it's tab
One for sorrow, two for joy, a new batch of friends who will end up annoyed
Those crafty yet deceiving fingers, if its not nailed down then it may well linger
A white vest with a black jacket surround
Any profit to be made and then homeward bound
For these creatures have no crux or moral dilemmas
They will rob you blind, laugh at your woes and squark with joy in a rude grammar
As these are the Devil's beings, you are blind if you are not seeing,
Them using you in every way, those lucky rhymes an old distraction to what you should be fleeing
For they are small, a minor aberration, we rarely take no notice
Forget the song to the number you have seen and what could have been when,
You look into those deep black beady eyes as they have an ulterior motive,

Things Move On
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
Time is a movement that we cannot escape
It surrounds the Universe in its vastness day by day
And with time its particulars are all attached
DNA to a drop of rain, it all comes as one big batch

Everything changes on a second by second basis
From the dinosaur to the bird in the sky,
Music from minstrels then onto blur and Oasis

Our skin becomes decrepit as we live within our souls
We build, we knock down, we start again to help out those in need
Builders help build, a life now easy, just ask Nick Knowles

But lets think of the future and how we guide Earths ship
We live, we learn, already ruined our surrounding layer of ozone
Ditch the aerosols, drain the diesel's as one Ice-Age was just a little tip

The same as all relationships, hiccups happen as is life
A stumble, a small trip, pick yourself up as this is it
Another chance ain't gonna happen, believe what you will

A sweep up, a quick clean, start again so it is all gone
The Gods of time sometimes get bored, lets stir things up
There is only so much you can watch until,

All Gods Plan
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
Life
Where do we start
From the days of a baby to the finals in some nursery
Everyday we have a plan
We don't execute these fantasy's but they are real
In your head, we married, we fought, we were the deal
Reality is a different beast though, that is for us all
What I'll be will not shock the world, as I will no doubt fall
We have plans, massive plans, as your parents did not make it
Watch me rise, watch me flourish, into a being that does not sit
I will show you how it is done, the route and the wisdom
The weak will fall, I strive on, a tidal wave under Earths sun
Crushing the likes that put us all down
Get out of my way, you retched little man,
This is me, the second coming never wearing that frown
Walking this Earth like I rule its surface
Soon to disappear, a legend for thousands of years
I disappear without trace as I am,

All God's Plan

But what was he in?
John Bartholomew Sep 2018
You look at the television, a new series is starting
Wife's making the tea, kettle boils, just waiting in the kitchen
3 minutes in, a face appears, it takes a minute to click
Honey, who's this guy, I've seen him before but it just wont tick

Hot drink in each hand, she steps in, looks, pauses and takes a think
Oh, he was in whats it called, that show with the family on the brink
He tried to ****** the mother to get the payout to feed the kids
No, different guy, he's in Corrie now emptying the bins

Keep watching, it'll come, this confusion that matters to nothing
But it's bugging, so frustrating, his face was definitely in something
What's his name, well I don't know, we'll have to wait until the end
Click on the info button, it'll show up there, I might even have to phone a friend

OK, nobody has mentioned him for a while, what was his name?
Been around the block a bit but not known for his fame
Appeared in The Bill, Birds of a Feather and Celebrity Generation Game
But a face you forget, an accent non describable and tomorrow you'd still forget it again

An every man, he fits in the plan, can take any role and just blend into the background
A speaking part, a bit-part actor, was even in some major films but never talk of the town
And then you look down in Tesco's, his name at last you see on a DVD in the bargain bin, great, its him!

But what was he in?!

John Bartholomew Sep 2018
To be called a name is not a nice thing at all
Labelled, branded, be called derogatory by a person who's views are usually quite candid
It plays on the mind for these answers you can't find and can leave a man almost lost
You fought, you battled, laughed off the daily crap and got back in the saddle
But these words have left you thinking and now slightly rattled
I've worked, took the flack, done some things wrong and gotten the sack
It's a part of life, the everyday strife, knowing where to put your foot next
And then it's read online, a social media site, your name downtrodden in text
Not all know it's meaning, but words can harm feelings, towards a person you've always admired
Life has it's negatives, for sometimes they cannot miss, a soul who used to inspire
So maybe that was it, a dig in midst,
were they drunk whilst typing this abuse and to cause a small personality bruise
It'll fade, a forgotten quip, but nobody likes to be seen as a man just out to use.

We all know when we are not wanted as it seems that many do,
A jolly up in the town, everyone there but you
Your work mates are friendly but only for the day
Theyve spoke of their home lives and that they think the dog is gay
A bit of what is known as banter wouldn't go a miss
Your mates of old all married now, your still searching for that bliss
Facebook and Twitter can be the final hurrah with pictures of their lives
2 kids and a dog to boot, only way to get them out is a free drink as a bribe
Your best friend and their new found buds, all arms up on that log flume up north
We had days like that at Chessington, 18 and ******, before your kids were spawned
We pretend we live alternative lives, who needs that wholesome charade of a perfection
A City flier, on all the apps, a wit you could not section
You tell the world your happy as, a life now ruled by Tinder
But tell the truth, your home in bed, fish finger sandwich probably from Findus
But it pulls at the heart, those pictures of happiness and a life that you thought was right
I'll get there someday, just ignoring the now, I'll say it again,

Even I Make Mistakes
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
A wrong word, a comma out of place
Misspelled, hyphenated, split into two
English sometimes a second language to me

A conversation taken too far
Stop! Don't tell that tale, now hindsight playing on your mind
What if they tell my parents, a big mouth I sometimes have

A joke, somebody's you heard on television
Don't try and make it your own
Its universal, you look like a fool, its out in the cosmos

A chat-up line, cheesy but sincere, will she even laugh
She smiled, now go away, try harder
Your persistence now overwhelming, time to cut that cord

The older you get, you then start to realise
Most things really are not worth it
The chase, the charm, what did you expect, no finish line in the race

To watch the ruler of the free world elected by the rabble
He says what he wants, laughed off in a tirade
But how long will he last by stating these massive promises

Yes we have all said something and thought back on that
Did that actually just come out of my mouth?
Yes, it really did, as on this Earth, hell,

The Importance of Being Me
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
You are Number One
You don't get hurt
You avoid sharp objects
You keep away from the dangerous
You shy away from the precarious
You do all this because you know
You drive a car most likely a Volvo
You don't fly on planes as they sometimes crash
You keep to the middle lane as motorways can be havoc
You even avoid roundabouts but always give way to the right
You know your times of what trains arriving
You have a set routine as disruption is not part of life's plan
You know people find you boring but that's down to them
You wash the car every Sunday as its recommended in life
You casually converse with your neighbour but secretly hate them
You even as a kid avoided climbing the local tree's because,

Life is a short journey and what is to be is to be,

John Bartholomew Aug 2018
Sometimes in life you don't know what you have got,
That one thing that can just drag you from that spot

A saviour, a God send, a Knight in shining armour,
Somebody who you would die for and not let a soul harm her

On a personal note I've been down some dark and troublesome roads,
But she has always been there through thick and thin to share this cumbersome load

A battler, a fighter, you wouldn't get on the wrong side of her,
She'd rinse you, she'd mince you, no matter lady or Sir

For she has always been by my side and she is everything to me,
Deirdra is her name but she'll always be,

Disabled Bog Blues
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
If you've not done it then you are a liar too
The luxury of the able-bodied to have a sneaky little poo
Look left, look right, there's nobody about
A peaceful time for what's needed now
A better handwash and a cleaner surround,
from the ceiling to extractor fan
Even onto the white grout

I'm not one to judge as I'd been there before
From a night in Yates's where they want your key to sniff coke
These private, uncompromising rooms have a life of their own, with stories I will not joke

The people of most Wetherspoons have a disabled key they use on a daily basis
Nothing wrong with them all, the odd one with a genuine NHS bracelet,
I tell you now, you really do start to hate it

But it is nice to be away from the majority of the public in a life I did not choose
Occupied, red dial turned, out come a pair of girls mostly half drunk, always together as a two
That is probably why it gets me down, a daily occurrence,
it affects us all,

Does a Dog Even Know?
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
We all know each other, if just from sound and sight
If brown, yellow, green or white
But sometimes its hard to tell even if their jeans are worn too tight

We all know whereabouts on the planet they were roughly born
If not from their clothes or a place now politically torn
But to have knowledge of a race with a history once scorned,

Its an ace card to hold when dipping your toes
Lets not get with a being who's past we all know
For war is a past, sometimes a crime, they'd just like to outgrow

A canine has no clue with who'm they may mate
As a mongrel is mongrel until they changed the label and date
A Labradoodle to a Cockerpoo and now even a Schnoodle
Its getting so confusing, well thank the Lord for Google!

Well we all have to have one thing and that is a label
Just let the dog be and lay underneath the kitchen table
Its becoming so confusing with how they are supposed to grow
Let nature take its course, I mean,

Does a dog even know?

A Divorce From One's Self
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
If I could take the parts, you know,
the bits that don't really matter
one by one,
moment by moment,
and push them off a cliff to a place that collects such worthless clutter

The mistakes I have made,
the thoughts that shouldn't follow on through but do
those past revelations, such stories of wondrous lies and the times I should just have just poopooed

We live a life that is never in the here and the now
The mundane taking over, every work hour a taste so sour
To look and to basically be your best,
those wrinkles showing old age,
an advert on your brow

We'd like to shove all these inacuracies and self loathing on a one way trip to hell
but its a part of the human being that grounds us all, a one time life in this corruptible shell

So to take away those parts that make us so inaccurate
would be a boring life with no ups or downs as we all like a few quid on an unsafe bet
those niggles, such talk that is utter drivel,
all to be placed in a room with a designated shelf

Not a chance, its a part of our lives,
for who would ever want to have,

I've never been a fan of a permanent picture tan
as I see them as a mark for life
a girl you once met, love at first sight
a mark on your neck, soon to disappear,
that tacky and ravenous love-bite

Married, three kids, a stupid affair, her name scrolled on your arm
like many a girl, she fell into your world,
all fallen for your devastating charm
But it happens so quick, that stupid thought of the fix,
all for some girl that you met down the pub
now everyday that you shower,
it doesn't matter about how much power,
its a stain that you cannot simply just rub

Styles, well they come and they go,
depending on what year you are born
mates at school , pictures drawn on the wall,
which girls name as your loyalty's are torn

But this was when you was a kid, acting like a ***,
showing off to those all around
now I'd like them removed, a name now a scar, not so smooth,
a hindsight of thoughts now drowned

Imaginary friend
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
I have colleagues and people that do
Have known a bestie at times but none of them are you
For we see things in an alternative and a make believe life
Where no one answers back and our life is just right

You laugh at my misgivings for you share the same exiled humour
Random thoughts as one, we share our friendship as it is but a rumour
We lose our own imaginary land in a life which is controlled by real life borders
As a made up friend can do no wrong or be taken over by fraudsters

As you are,
A text I cannot send
A cut that I cannot mend
A story that cannot trend
A night out where I cannot spend
For no other words here that I can lend,
As you are my,

Directions are great when there is one to follow
No map
No book
No clue
Its down to you

It all starts from day one
You watch
You listen
You learn
Everyday a lesson in which way to turn

Given the odd snippet of how it is done
Been there
Been everywhere
Been the real me
Down to you now so lets see

The guidebook is written as we go along
To be that man
To be those who can
To see over the upcoming hill and be the boss

For we will always be this in life,

Say Something Stupid
John Bartholomew Aug 2018
You thought it
You dreamt it
You put it into a pass
She heard it
She ignored it
She'd heard it somewhere in the past
Your punching
You've no chance
Your well out of your league
She's stunning
She knows this
She's from another seed
Yes she likes you
Yes you're no Cupid
And yes, you did say something stupid,

And that's probably why she's with you

You laughed
You really did laugh
At a joke so morbid yet clear
Seen as a sin
Now straight in the bin
To chuckle at something so near
I'm hurt
Were hurt
A group so new and always it seems in fear
Offended
Say it again, now reoffended
by a story so funny it used to bring a tear
For humour is old
To be told is now bold
That now lurks in us all as a ghost,

For it is,

A Death Less Funny Than Most

Paralysis
John Bartholomew Jul 2018
Since I became paralysed I've lost the will to use it
My instinct, my never say never, my last minute don't give a ****,
now just a gurgle in a draining sink

I'd say to the wife, let's stay here, book a room, a night of passion,
not a care in the drop of a beat
Now I must pre-book, distinctly decide,
accessible doors and not to forget the supps, the **** and an inco sheet

The cage maybe open but the beast is still asleep,
only awoken by a blue pill for the night
A reliance now dependant on who signs the scribble,
paid for by the NHS and who's not feeling to tight

Are there steps and is it really going to be worth it
the struggle, the helping out and sometimes feeling like a useless ***
OK, so its not really that bad
I just emphasis the crap points that sometimes make me sad

But its a new way of life you really had better believe
to have back what I had before, yes I often do grieve
but there is no going back as it is what it is
keep your head up,
keep your heart strong and try and regain that lost fizz

Little Lion Cub
John Bartholomew Jul 2018
Sometimes they think they are it
the man of the house, demanding when sat, a real big hit
relishing the chain of command over those who wait on hand and foot
for they start off small, expecting so much more,
as they have written the book

But let’s not forget who is the real master here
they are just a cub, cute yet endearing,
but you’d rather be down the pub supping a beer
scratching the sofa with eyes so large they are easily forgiven
killing flies and onto mice, it is how they are driven

As the kitten is a creature yet to grow into its fold
playing like a baby does until its days of old
they’ll fight and cry like kids, you’ll hear them on the street
they won’t give up, soft yet tough,
never knowing when they’re beat

A dog is fun and obeys command, yet these things rarely do
you’ll call all night, their name out loud, but never return on que
yet eat you out of house and home,
Felix down to the last lick of the butter tub
as they are animal of selfish wit,
a beast when grown but will always be my,

Little Lion Cub
