You know, I almost called the other night.
Almost.
I’d like to think that
you would’ve almost picked up,
and I would’ve almost said something.
It’s a good thing I’ve almost lost your number;
I could get lonely someday
and forget that you almost wanted to stay.
I forget a lot nowadays.
I almost called the other night, you know.
But I’ve learned that “almost”
only counts in “I love you’s”
and “goodbye’s”.
Maybe I’ll almost sleep tonight.
It’s strange that I keep dreaming
about the night we walked around the city.
I always end up on the park bench
by your house,
waiting.
I’ve almost stopped wishing you’d show up.

You loved her with your body all night but didn't know who she was in the morning.
You even turned the lights out before turning
Your hands in her hair but they're actually touching her mind
Your fingers tracing her skin but you can't even see the lines they're leaving behind
Your arms around her waist and she tries to make it seem like forever.
But it's only one night and she can't seem to bring all of her thoughts together.
A single touch, its like a single drop in a perfectly still pond and even you can't stop the ripples from making waves.
You think they'd wear out by now but they've been crashing around her for days.
Oh and you're touching her, touching her, and she's trying to hear words but she can't even make out a sound.
Your waves they're splashing her
S p l a s h i n g her
And she thought she could drink them but she drowned.

Your words hung like
White Christmas lights
All along the walls of my bedroom
They got tangled in the sun
And faded away
On summer days
But they kept me up
Every night
In the winter

You wanted to hold the world in your hands
But the edges were sharp
And by the time we graduated high school
You were sick of bleeding

You wanted to hold my waist in your hands
But your hands were opened wounds
And I slipped right through them

You hung yourself
Like the white Christmas lights
That wrapped around your mother's
Front porch in December

You wanted to hold the world in your hands
But your hands were opened wounds
And it slipped right through them
I carry your life on my back
And the weight is breaking my spirit

The harsh lips
of poison ivy
have kissed
my arm and wrist.
Warnings yelled
about leaving the trail
but a good adventure
always comes with
risks

When I was fourteen
And looking for Home
They told me I'd find it
Between lavender walls
And wooden floors
They said it'd smell like
Warm sugar cookies
And fresh hazelnut coffee
They said I'd cry into
The softest of pillows
And wrap my broken limbs
Around the warmest of blankets
But by the time I made it there
The walls were lined in bruises
The floors were cold and calloused
It smelled like cigarettes,
Whiskey
And cherry incense
The pillow I cried into
Would rise and fall
In an uneasy rhythm,
Sometimes breaking off
Into random shaking
And the blanket I wrapped
My broken limbs around,
Often had broken limbs
Of its own
Because
When I finally found Home
It wasn't a place at all
But a boy with bloodshot eyes
And a crooked smile

When you press your ear to my chest
Checking the life of my heart
I hope you can hear
What I was too afraid to say
"I love you," killed me
Because nothing is worth dying for
Quite like love
We're all going to die

I said I’d never write about you again,
but I suppose I’m just as good at lying
as I am at leaving.
I’ve forgotten what your voice sounds like.
I always criticized you for not letting go,
as if the weights around my ankles
weren’t made of my faults
and everything I wish I could take back.
You told me today that
you’ve found love again.
I hope he finds flowers growing
from all the cracks I created
in your heart.
I hope he sees galaxies
in the darkened voids
I left behind your eyes.
I hope he understands
that you are full of splintered doors
on rusted hinges
that need to be loved and not repaired.
I hope he is nothing like me.
I’m sorry my words left scars.
I’m sorry my silence
reopened them constantly.
I’m sorry I was too busy
loving myself,
instead of loving you.

he interrupted me
in the middle of
an earth shatteringly
pointless story
to tell me i had
a cute laugh,
in a smoke-filled
garage infront of
all of our friends.
i said,
"alright dude
*******"

that night
i slept in the fetal
position with four blankets
and craved his skin so
bad i didn't even notice
that i bit my lip
until the pool of blood
collecting inside the deep ditch
of my gums, began to taste
of hot metal

today he texted me
while i was at work
and asked if he could
bring me a coffee
i looked at myself
in the bathroom mirror,
sighed and told him
we were busy
then i bought a
coffee for myself,
let the bitter sweet
warm liquid
linger on my tongue
and pretended
it was his lips

alone is a state of being
and i have never been alone,
lonely is a state of mind
and i have never been anything but

Did you get what you wanted
or are you still haunted
by a shiver in your bones
and quiver in your lips
when you think about what's beneath
your clothes
go slow now, breathe easy
speak careful because your words
are not like friends
you can't take them back, no
you can't take them back
dressed in black
darker than pitch
last ditch effort to throw your head back
exhale and laugh it all away
this is the last advice I'll give you
so listen deep to what I say
every guy who holds you up
might just drag you down
compare them all to me
do they listen to your music
do they know your favorite tea
do they tuck you in at two a.m
before they have to leave
if they don't make your jaw drop
or surprise you everyday
ask yourself this question
did you get what you
wanted

did you get
what you...
