You
this poem isn't about you
I don't know how I feel
I'd rather write about the Moon
or something else that's real

or how the rising tide can be
a metaphor for change
or something deep
beneath the sea
mysterious and strange

but will I turn away from you
in silence and control
or write the shining sky into
a mirror for your soul?

with every single word I write
the lie becomes less true
to shout into the night
"This poem isn't about you!"

how much of your soul have we bought?
do you decide what the world thinks
or learn to think the Zeitgeist's thoughts?

watch your step
don't rock the platform you've been given
choose your words
like you deserve
to blindly serve the algorithm

when you do bad things
I forgive you

when you show weakness
I don't judge

although sometimes
I get angry

still I do not
hold a grudge

your imperfections
make you special

your problems
make me want to help

and it is true
that I love you

the way I wish
I loved myself

you are like a well
when I fall into you
my sky becomes so narrow
I can only see one sign

just this once
can I not run
from a safe haven
full of hope
into a den of beasts?

why do I look for that?
am I afraid of peace?

in the dark water
a shining light
is it the Sun
or the eye
of some

monster of the deep

I tell myself that I hate you
deep down I know that isn't true

the truth is that I am afraid
of a love sharper than a blade

the things I hope and feel and want
are not so easy to confront

so I conceal my pain and fear
with anger
like a steel veneer
