Little bird
CA Guilfoyle Sep 2014
Oh, bird how can you sing?
and today of all days you bring
little twigs and colors green
to fall among dead flowers.
Do you know of this lost garden?
How can your heart beat so
amidst such troubled, sorrow?
Still you fly joyous in the morning sky
lighting hearts afire in the early dawn
long before the sun.

In a dream
CA Guilfoyle Sep 2013
In a dream, somewhere in other countries, never mapped
a man was speaking, though I did not understand, there was never any plan
and I listened to the wind and rain upon the trees.
With no church bells to ring, and birds were the chorus
I came upon a silent steeple in the forest, standing on it's own,
became a wild bird's home, wrapped in thorny vines
a crown to stain, with berries, bled upon my hands.
Mary was there too, she was looking through
a broken window pane, calling out my name
and too, all the forest called, bathing me in love.
Then with the birds I flew, heavenly into
a deeper dream, til I  awoke at dawn,
to fragrant flowers on the lawn
remembering such heaven.

an ache, beautiful a sorrowful longing
deep, calling you home

Unknown poet
CA Guilfoyle Jan 2014
It was as if they wrote only to set us free,
never thinking twice about the landing or flight,
plowing dirt fields, with scores of prose, in sorrow and delight.
In a room of sun, where seasons come
with snow and rain, and none will ever be the same,
long after the reading, and none will ever know the poet's name
or why the words have opened wide
their buried hearts
to grieving.

Walking home
CA Guilfoyle Jul 2014
Today walking the cut off road, home
watching clouds and birds disappearing
all these moments of coming, going
I came upon feathers of a flicker, brightest orange
and further on the road, his body
and wondered of his dying
and if he was freer in death
or in flying

Of my own life I pondered
the fleeting moments of freedom
so much lost in the sinking sun of youth
difficult to find amidst a hurried life
fewer and farther in between
to breathe, a restless mind
settling in a silent stream
and when shall come the hour
a moment to be free

To be a bird
CA Guilfoyle Nov 2013
Bright chartreuse edged, magenta flowers, with lavender
just beyond in the bee fields of summer, thousands of seeds, days spilling over
planted in early autumn rains, to wait again, dotted in red rows of poppies.

Today no clouds will come
only purple mountains glow, before the sun
beyond these fragrant hills, I wander
watching hawks and sparrows
til the golden day slips away
and I am lost between the space
of night and day, and lose all trivial words
and think how glorious
to be a bird

Trees
CA Guilfoyle Nov 2014
Looking at apples, my mouth of juice
longing to taste one delicious bite
I stand under this tree
for days

I climbed many a splintered fence
saw you from a great distance
sturdy branches, your arms
leafy crown of thorns
and charms

In trees where ravens fly
from blackest skies
to shelter storms
days of clouds
and cruel raining winds
where even strongest branches falter

Summer song
CA Guilfoyle Jul 2014
Woods, the birds on branches, swing
words, the forest trees, will sing
of summer winds, a leafy song of green
blue the sky is painting, not a cloud
only the sparkling of sun, a song
of mosses warmed, a fragrance undone
black and fuzzy yellow bees, circle hypnotically
tiny hunters, drunk with pollen, disappearing
in the tiger lily towers, and fly they
home to serve a sacred queen
all the day, the sweetness
of gathering honey

Storms

Waterfall, the swell of rains will come
fierce a wind that takes our breath and then is gone
the mad sailing, that leaves us to the wild seas
borne of oceans, ripped away, lost to vacant longings
we wait the temperamental moons of coming, going
always seeking for other shores, anchors
to hold our souls, unchained, reclaimed
in foreign lands, hearts to mend
and still another storm
will come

I will leave
CA Guilfoyle May 2016
Tonight, with its blue moving stars
and mars overhead, in its bright blinking red
the breezing leaves upon the rooftop eaves, calling
a falling star, impossibly high catches the eye, while dying
and I dream to fly, flit and roam amid night's celestial home
but with tethered feet, can only gaze upon the sky, to drink
in the space within my mind, I try to be and not to think
but feel the distant seas, that crash in waves and never cease
the endless ages, ancient and modern ways of humanity
and tonight, I imagine you out there lying soft upon the grass
tracing the dying stars, reflecting on the things that have come to pass
knowing very soon I too, will leave in summer.

funeral march
CA Guilfoyle Apr 2014
When you were a child,  skies went on forever
golden light, your heart - of fiery field
with a toy gun to shoot the falling stars
from heaven

Once I saw a funeral march
walking slow as fog, gray sorrow made it's way
with flowers, and faces cried like rain
and stayed with me, all the day

When I was a child, death was foreign
mysterious as plague and strange
on wintry wings it seemed to come
- never calling your name

In those days and dreams of ocean birds
with songs of love, you swam to the warming sun

Today outside your window
a tiny bird sings
to the solemn dawn
unaware that you have gone
just like all the golden flowers
of yesterday and tomorrow
commentary on the loss of my Father

lofty floats, touches invisibly soft
unseen through the scope of eyes
comes brushing by or comes in a down pouring
wet washing the soul, unwavering, wordless it unfolds
travels most rugged terrain, then smooths the way
there is no season for its efflorescence
it sits a silent bud any moment to flower
always we've known it's fragrance
it is the way, the path
a flitting ethereal flower
deeply felt, though in hand
