First Nations
Benjamin Dec 2015
There's not a leaders hand
Free from blood
Of native bands

Fiercely defending their ancestors home
Beating their drums, rattling their bones

Who owns the earth in which to be sold?
The same as the sky, some wise ones once told

Until we learn how to simply just be
Wandering the forest looking to eat.

Crazy horse stood up brandishing bows,
Collecting coups against his foes

Joseph rode hard showing no fright
Wind at his back, preparing to fight.

Yellow Dog
Benjamin Dec 2015
Stubborn as nails
Bent into oak

Feeling as if
I shouldn't have spoke

Wondering when
The tide would have broke

Hampered as always
Heaving this yolk

My ear in the forest
Hearing the croak

Of frogs leaping lightly
Hidden and cloaked

A once broken cycle
again has been stoked

Away from this dream
Is where I awoke

My long lost brother's
Name I'll evoke

In hearing his stories
Now turned to folk

The cedar is bent
But cannot be broke

As long as one breaths
It's incense as smoke

Turtle Island
Benjamin Dec 2015
On a turtle's shell I awoke.
Apart the land from which we broke.

I'd miss my home if I knew.
There wasn't better beyond this blue.

Alone I'm not, our lot is few.
We'd pull up land to replace the dew.

Which collected on its back
The lowest creature formed a pact

Bringing soil from the murk
For others waiting on his work
Based on Oral tales of the Algonquin First People

Bloom
Benjamin Dec 2015
Too much is said, its all the same
Love is lost, under forgotten names

Effort shows true intent
Has one lost this time spent?

Unfurling flowers bloomed for you
Vivid colors shown in every hue

My imagination ran away with smoke
Dreams sometimes, only choke.

Like Cherry Blossoms showing brief
Soon as coming, begin to cease.
