We are a people
One people
We have endeavored
To merge in the life of communities
To preserve the faith
We are not permitted to do so
In vain are we loyal patriots
Our loyalty, extreme
In vain do we make sacrifices of life and property
In vain do we strive to increase fame and wealth
For centuries
We are cried down
As strangers
The majority may decide which are strangers
For this is a question of might
I do not surrender our right
As it is now, might, precedes right
It is useless for us to be loyal patriots
If we could only be left in peace....
Theodor Herzl, The Jewish State [1896]
