Who am I?
This I know not,
Nor do my family,
Nor my friends.

At every instance I wear a mask.
I wear one with my friends,
With my family,
And I truly believe that I have created one for myself.

Sometimes a mask will break
Which gives me a second to let go,
But also gives me a reason
To just make another.

I don't know if I am real
Or am "I" just another one of my masks.
This I don't know.
I just hope that one day
I have the courage and strength to
Take off my mask.

People say that the people we are
Around define who we are,
But they don't,
They just add on
A word to our definition.
And we add one to theirs.

Our definition is long because
We see millions of different people
Every day.
They don't have to say a word to us
To affect us they just have to exist.

We can't choose who affects is,
But we can choose how they do.
No definition starts off negative or positive,
But as words are added the meaning changes,
And how we are used does as well.
Till either we are forgotten or over used.

In the end our definition made an
Impact on everyone that
Truly understood who we were.

When you have everything,
Do you really have everything?
To gain something you first
Have to lose something you had.

When you have nothing,
Do you really have nothing?
To lose a piece of the world
You gain a piece of yourself.

What really defines possession?
Is it to have all the control?
Is it to own it all?
Or is it to simply help grow?

We all have something
We have the power to build,
But we also have the power to destroy.
We choose which one we use
Every day.

May dreams attend
The Sandman's watch
with happiness and bliss
And may those dreams be soothing
as the lightest fairy's kiss.

May evil tidings yet abide
in cells you've buried deep.
Let not the rumors
of their shadows ere
disturb thy sleep.

Put aside your cares and woes,
and for this night abide,
where azure waves
lap silver shores
and hopes drift
with the tide.

And so, goodnight.
I wish thee well
and when you next arise
let nothing stop
thy happiness
beneath the pastel skies.

how is it with you everything feels natural and right?
I didn’t think I could find someone I could talk to
without my heart fluttering uncomfortably in my chest
like a bird locked in a cage, just yearning to be free
wanting the conversation to end

do you know my heart flutters with you--
with a strange happiness?

I always believed love should feel like a release
and not a restriction
but it was difficult when with every soul
I find absolutely no pull
no connection

tell me this--
can you feel it too?
because I’m constantly in awe of this, of you
I’m left with wonder at our intertwined existences
how suddenly it could happen,
and how surprisingly right
nothing is forced or clashing
it simply merges and flows

there are some things too wonderful
for our finite minds to comprehend
that perhaps our souls just know.
darling, so it goes; some things are meant to be.
"Kids just don't have any respect for their betters these days..."

Well
When you decide to come home from work
To see your kids seated in the same spot they have been in since they got home from school
Laboring over homework that really never ends
A chores list laying forgotten on the counter in front of their eyes glued not to their phones
But to the massive pile of work that even you couldn't hope to accomplish
And instead of encouraging them to finish their work
Shout at them for not taking your needs into consideration,

Remember that every period of every school day (That's 6 periods, 5 days a week)
Every single one of their teachers is telling them the same thing
To forget the other work and prioritize theirs.

Recall that even before their homework that they have extracurriculars
And colleges are looking for not just academic excellence but social too.

Remind yourself that on top of THAT, they are constantly under pressure from themselves as well
No one puts themselves through hell without mental conviction
And certainly no lazy student would ever take initiative unless it was extremely important.

Your chores pale in comparison to the ocean of stress floating in the minds
Of the very people you berate.

And bear in mind that you are not their betters
For respect is a privilege to earn,
Not a right to have.
