Under the old house
cast in conglomerate mix
the cataract window
and cracked sill
broken joists
and cross beams
wringer wash
and saddle set

A draw string light
brings life
to the corner bench
fowler toads
and fingerlings
jitter bugs
and dazzy vance
dirt planks filled
with mason
crown classics

Buggy whip
and whippletree
shelved on the
chopboard
tackle and mucks
stacked at the back
horseshoe and jack rod
bend the pike pole
a sawhorse placed
for the Martindale push

Gallon jars
and growlers
prepped
for the taking
ropes and reins
for transport
and fest
goggle eye
jumps the flyer
setting up nicely
for the
Haldimand town fair

The sea's grown calm,
Just two days out,
Finally,
The ice is in our wake,
We're thinking of a
Run ashore,
We've earned it,
Six days through
The sea smoke,
Fog,
Ice bergs,
Bergy bits,
Growlers,
All the usual debris
Of travel in these parts,
Now the only debris,
Pods of whales,
Folks pay to see them,
We get paid to see 'em,
Sort of,
It's been a long cruise,
But still,
We are getting paid,
In the morning,
We'll give the ship
A bath,
And get ready for
A real reward,
There's got to be
Some reward,
For vigilance,
And boredom
All across the pond,
And there is a reward,
There'll be Newfie merchants
On the jetty,
Bringing to us,
Barrels of...
Lobsters,
They don't have much,
In Newfie Land,
But lobsters they've got,
An over supply,
We'll bring 'em home,
Steamed and frozen,
Ready to eat,
And while we're here,
Perhaps a little beer,
A reward for not hitting
A single whale,
Let's keep the Navigator sober,
Insurance that he miss
Sable Island,
On the next leg south,
After all,
It's the last leg home.
And so,
St. John's,
Not a garden spot,
But good enough,
To be the last stop.

We are the wild cats
We are the black winged ones
We are the light soaring ones
We are the free ones
The jungle vine swinging ones
With deep souls of fiery passion

We are the howlers
the grizzly sizzly growlers
Prowling our desires
We are yearning with an ancient burning
We are fire
Sacred fire
Untamed fire
We are risers
We are seekers
We are destroyers
Wanderers

We are the branch twisting
Tongue hissing
Cackly
Wild
Wild ones

Roots that tear rocky granite open
To stretch into the innermost
To reach into the bubbly
molten lava
Core
Of our cardinal sins...

="$%+=-Lightening$%$-#="

Electric galaxies
Zapping through veins of static hair
We are the witch sisters
Stormin' swarmin' transformin'  explorin' roarin'
Stirring up a *** of sinister magic
We are the atrocious
We... are the wise
We are the... ruthless

We are...
A different kind of guardian

We are cats
Hungry
So, so hungry with longing
For the deep, deep,
Soul quakin'
Earth shakin'
Rumbling
Mountain movin'
Screaming volcanic eruption
Of untamed Passion

We are the ones
who caught hold of the sun,
left flaming
in our courageous hands.

We are
Restless hearts with lighted torches
Who shall run
For centuries upon centuries
Carving
our feet into the soil

We are the feathered tips
That wing into the crying sky

We are the ripe
Youthful
Laughing ones
Jovial
Free ones

The adventurers
the adventerous
The unquenchable
The mysterious

The stalking
The silent

The Venomous,
whose bite
will make you one of us,
Thirsty
So
so
very
Very Thirsty..

We are blood lustin'
***** stompin'
Vampires
With never ending desire

We are the cape wearing
Dracula
With flaring bats

We are absolutely MAD!!
MAD MAD MAD
to the bone!!!

And...

...all alone...

Scaring away those afraid

Of what lies at the centre
of that storm
Oh but we primordial spirits know
We have been versed in this dance
We have sung these songs
We have spun these flames
and
Even if
we cannot fathom,
Our bones shall unwillingly guide  us
Pull us
to that place,
To the center
Of this storm.

For that is where
the truest light exists.
There lies,
The absolute,
The unquestionable,
The silent
Mother.
She waters our fires
(A gentle sizzling hum),
She melts us,
into her soothing oceans.

We are ( I say in earnest whispers) the wild ones
who run
run
       run
               run
                            naked
until starry eyed skies
make love
to daybreak

And
raspy sunrises
fold over yawns
Like soft warm blankets

Kittens once again
Bathing in the great
and
mighty
womb
Of all
creation.

Bathing...
in the
Ethereal
bliss
Of
Silence.

Xtra Tuffs, forgotten. Ten mornings to go.
Let us start with ten miles to Ewan Bay.
Passing Granite Bay and rocks that crowd Junction Island,
seals furtively eye us, and orange-footed Oyster Catchers
stay grounded while gulls erupt into flight and frantic shrieks.

Zip, peal, zip: from dry suit to tent.
Storm teacher. We learn water below,
water above, water without, and water within.
At Bog Island, fingers are colorless, wrinkled fruit, and we
must think of wetness in layers.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
Bog Island becomes a convalescent home, made of polyester tarp.
To stay warm, Yoga in the rain. Two are napping.
While we rest, beached ice become snarling growlers,
I see and listen in the quiet way.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
Before crossing Jackpot Bay, we visit a waterfall.
While we lurch to avoid bear ****, dark blurs leap into vertical flows.
Tonight, we tuck our tents under a canopy
of alders against a rock wall, slicked with falling water.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
Four days of dampness and heavy brows. The sky teases with streaks of blue
that enliven ice-green bergs. Suddenly, sun spills over clouds.
Wordless gasps and elation melt our moods.
Glacial air chases warm rocks. We race to dry our gear.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit. Again Island found, in Gaanaak Cove.
Blueberries drip from the bushes like the rain of the past four days.
Yellow arnica stand like sunflowers, and I feel her here.
The commuting breeze sounds like morning traffic on the Glenn.
Chenega, that achy glacier, growls like a distant tarmac.

This morning, rays of sunshine dance on my tent for a few seconds.
Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
We arrive to Nassau Fjord as unwelcome, party crashers
To hundreds of seals lounging on their icy chaises.
Don't Go, I think. We were uninvited.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
Haibun, Didactic Cinquain, and Diamante:
These formulas are like the handrail method Jonathan teaches for reading a map.
Intentionally point off course to the stream that goes into the lake,
or veer to intersect the road to the parking lot.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
At Dual Head, the tide is a mirror to itself.
The echoing waves, equal and opposite to my breath.
I relish the watercolor and poetry on the beach under our
first and only setting and then rising sunshine.

Zip, stuff, zip: from tent to dry suit.
Despite the small-craft advisory in Whittier yesterday,
We are delivered from the Sound on calm waters
as we reunite with family and former self.
I believe I am more than I was.
Nolan Higgins Nov 2018
The conductor never gave me a map
With the stops highlighted in yellow.
Never told me how long until
Just the destination
And perhaps a sad smile.

Please don't apologize:
You did it to me again?
No, you gave love only.
I do it to myself.

Smoke from the Camp Fire (capitalized, it's a proper noun this time)
Fills the air,
Stifles it, poisons it
And yet
So beautiful to look straight at the sun during midday,
Right around when I leave work
Work
That ****** place that kept me from you, those 8 wasted hours.
That ****** place that will provide me the means to get to you.
That ****** place that provides me the means to give you physical tokens of love, to buy you Plan B and books.

**** it all

So I've scrubbed under my nails,
Washed my sheets (goodbye long hairs, although I'm sure they'll stick around)
Organized my books,
Threw out the trash, the beer bottles and bottles and bottles
The empty cigarette packs.

I haven't driven since you left
Haven't looked forward to my bed.
Haven't smiled after waking
Haven't found you in the night

But **** this sad ****,
Let's put on some happy music and hope it sticks.
Put away The Growlers
Put on the Modern Lovers.
If you inspire me when you're here I'll become better when you're not.
I'll read more (smoke more drink more cry more)
I'll save money
I'll play that ****** guitar in the closet.
I'll be a better man so that when we see each other again
I'll be able to leave you with more of me,

How did you say it?
You make living easy and fun?
The nicest words anybody has ever said to me.
The most heartbreaking **** I've been told from 600 miles away.
i make living easy and fun,
Very good, that's what I'll do.

Show me your gods
All fur, purr and bark
Feather, skin, scale.
Those demi beings
that mark your heart
and steal your soul.
Those scraps of love
That make hard days whole
mornings bearable and nights
A little less lonely, predictable
or indeed a little less cold
The bed hoggers, extra joggers
The shoe chewers, the foremen
the cuties, the mute beggers
Soulful singers, paper bringers
Howlers, growlers,meowers
Chirpy talkers, hissers,
water blissers,
Princes  waiting to be kissed
sloppy drooly kissers,
the sandpaper lickers
The back leg kickers
those who make biscuits
those who sleep,
like loaves of bread
Tail waggers, live in baggers
Perch dancers, walkies prancers
**** machines, Catnip dreamers
Redlight baskers

Show me your gods..
be they small, large, short, tall
Slim, plump, grim lumps
Portly, courtly, royalty
or  hot  fluffly messes

Bring them out to parade
with these god's
a home is made
and in these days dark and dreary
We need these gods
for when we become weary
Of the world we've made
We need
somewhere to lay our hearts
some thing that has a unlimited
grab bag of fresh starts.

These gods
everyday the give you a bit of
extra heart extra hope
A reason to hang on
to laugh to cry, to talk to sigh

So show to me;
your gods
and say a prayer
and thank the lord
he made them with care.
These little(or not so little) beings that steal our hearts and rule our homes...have in this family at least, made life a little more bearable over the last couple of months
So lets celebrate them
Kiernan Norman Jul 2022
begin as a small soul-
stretch the ugly-
mind the dew.

Fill each borough with hands praying across beads,
******* in cheeks.
Here you can use the sky
to help you swallow.

Here you wonder historic in an orange wind tunneling
fierce, fluid, fast;
far and full,
Desperate to exhale
and spit down a subway grate.
No one’s looking for utopia anymore:
no rings
no wings.

Walk through haunted architecture for old times' sake.
What does ‘gilded age’ even mean?
On this block, our pipe’s clatter, burn up, and belly,
and the electricity smells.
We wear our shoes even as we sleep.

My body is a tenement,
families cram and people toil
in each room, room, room.
Layers of walls can be peeled off like skin,
we touch our lips and get dizzy.

I’m low light and no fire escapes, you’re growlers
of ale and some sort of horn in the saloon.
Together we are dangerous,
a public health emergency,
an evening that feels like home.

Laughter like glue dripping and drying;
exploring the oakwoods and getting itchy.
A moment, an arm, a radio.
A pinging kind of dire,
a different kind of parade.

His big issue is not company or crowds;
It’s nice girls like me seeing the same heart
but refusing to trip. I walk to bridges,
he stays sown on stoops.

We grip the same maps
but we seek a separate landscape.
I have bad thoughts and become the opposite,
we meet good omens and tuck them in the furnace.
I hear you aching like a slice of too-ripe fruit.
I remember not to look.
