Popsicle Sticks

Popsicle sticks once covered with ice
all colors and flavors
they tasted so nice

Those sticks were so straight and flat

look like they had seen combat

I feel I have done more
than just existed
in my life

Your outlook on life changes
when certain unexpected things happen
things that are out of one's control

When you know
nothing will be different
until the day you die

You tend to live
in the middle
wondering which
way to go

that was bit by a snake
he crawled up on the sand
so I gave him a hand

That was the first thing I would hear, each and every day
With his big blue eyes looking into mine
I just smiled and listened as if I were hearing

Pets And People
Connie Hopkins Apr 2021
Pets are different as are people
Which is in control, do you know?
They are side by side and may think as equals
The feelings they share are beyond compare
They look into each others eyes
With feelings that can't be disquised
Companionship, love and, trust for these are a must
Some may think it is silly, but really
Pets are friends till the end.

Dusty boxes with dusty books
They hold the memories we took
I wish we could go back
To do it all again
There is not one thing I would change.

From the first time, we became one
I knew we would become a pair
The couple, the pair who stayed
The ones who made it all the way.

Whatever the future
We will be together
Whichever one goes first
The other will follow

Then we will become one again
His ashes with mine, will be spread
Over our home place.

Then who will remember
Those dusty boxes and books
All those memories we took.

Out My Window
Connie Hopkins May 2023
When I look out the window
what do I see a little bitty
blue bird looking back at me.
it flutters around just pecking at the ground.
then a big bird comes out
and scares it away.

I looked out my window,
what do I see?
All of God's blessings
he has given me.

Flowers Of Spring
Connie Hopkins Apr 2021
Flowers of spring look what you bring
Your pedals so soft and colors so bright
They are small and tender
Yet look what they render
Some smell so sweet
You'll always remember
Some spread out like carpets on the ground
They might even climb on a limb
Some even sit high on their stem
With bright colored centers
Pointed straight toward the sky
What ever the color, smell or size
With God's love each spring they will rise
Some even close at night
Just to reopen, what a beautiful sight.

Ali
Muhammad Ali is such a pretty boy
Is it hard for him to read?
but it is easy for him to lead
is it hard for him to write?
but easy for him to fight

Is Muhammad Ali not too bright?
keep thinking that
while he dances around so light
who else could please the crowd?
not bright? He made his mama proud.

In our hearts, he is still
as Ali said,
floatin like a butterfly
and stingin like a bee.
we miss you, Muhammad Ali
Rest In Peace.

The man you gave me to love more than any other
Is fading away in front of my eyes
Lord, please tell me how to except this
I love you Lord, but I love him more

I know I should love you most
Please tell me how to do this
He doesn't deserve this suffering
Then neither did you Lord

I know you don't cause pain and illness
I know you could heal him
You know he is a good person

Please heal him, please don't take him
I know you are a jealous God
Please let me keep him, I need him more than you.

River so wide
What do you hide?

River so wide
What do you hide?
Pebbles and pennies
I wonder how many

River so wide
What do you hide?
Gold and treasure
Which is your pleasure?

What do you hide?

Growing up having to hide
your tears and fears
from the one person who should
help you, not hurt you more
you do things, that you hope
will make her proud of you
or at least happy with you
but nothing works

Mom asked if it would be alright
if the man that molested me
spent Christmas Eve Night

I was asked would it be ok
if I did not get anything
for Christmas but a used
a camera that belonged to her
because there was no money

Then Christmas morning arrives
there are presents everywhere
but none for me

I had 1 dad and 3 stepdads
only one was a keeper
I thank the Lord for him
this man I knew as Joe.

Ice Storm
Connie Hopkins May 2021
Beautiful blades of ice
hanging in the sun
sparkling with dripping colors

The trees bent over and white
as if the snow was scratching
their backs

It is so dark tonight
he lit the candles
and filled the huge cooler
with hot water from the  fireplace

Candles burning
with the fragrance of pine
hanging in the cold air
of our kitchen

The 200-year-old pine walls
and the large beams
showing where the axes
had struck so long- ago
complementing the
whole setting

Just enough light
from the candles
to make it romantic
with sweet music
playing so low.

This is the way
I remember that nite
of the Ice Storm
so long ago.

Their eyes meet
She could be praying and begging
Then it hits him
Down he goes
Not understanding the ringing in his head
Or the blood running out of his nostrils
In a few seconds she is free and flees
In a few more the intruder lay dead

The power of having firearms in the home
How else would she be able to drop him like a stone.
