Women
Salmabanu Hatim Feb 2024
Have the right to equality,
But they are not equal to men,
Not in their anatomy,
Not in their ways.
Allah has created them with love and time,
Given them the extra sixth sense of intuition.
Men can be men,
But it is the woman who gives birth to them.

Well! Your opinions matter no more,
Yeah!

I'm gonna eat and dress what I like,
You oughta go your way,
I gonna go my way.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
You are you,
I'm me,
Me loves me,

On my birthday my wife and I took my mum to see a movie,
Then we went to the restaurant she loved to go when I was a child,
We ordered all her favourite dishes,
She always loved the sea so we went for a long drive along the bay,
Lastly we had icecream and  betel leaf  sweet paan which she relished in glee,
I have never seen mum so happy and glow.
It was the day I was born and that day was very special for her too,
As we grow older we forget the sacrifices our mum makes for us,
Thanks to my understanding wife I made my mum so happy.

The language of God,
When you pray with belief and good faith,
HE answers without words.
HE fulfills your prayers if they are meant for you,
Otherwise HIS silence is for your good,
Or the time to grant your wish is not right,
HE always does things for a reason.

Tricked
One day a man went to the market to buy vegetables,
He saw a pretty young woman with her mum looking bored,
As her mum haggled with the vendor,
It was love at first sight.
He decided to court her and spent what he earned on her.
He proposed and she said yes on condition she would come to his house to see how he lived,
It was a bungalow with two luxury cars parked outside,
Wow!
When she entered the living room she saw two photos of his mum and dad with a garland on each,
No in laws, no extra baggage
Cool!
The house was  beautiful with a well maintained  garden,
Candle light dinner was awesome with five star dishes,
This is my style
Money minded she quickly agreed to the court wedding.
On the wedding night as she stepped out of the car which was hired,
She saw a young couple on the porch wishing her well with a smile,
That's my boss her husband said,
Shocked her steps faltered,
God! Deceived,
He took her hand and led her to the servant's
quarters,
Where her in-laws father, mother and two sisters stood to greet her,
Cheater, cheater,
I am the chef,
My father is the gardener,
And my mother and sisters are maids at the house,
And you will live like a queen.
*** tears welled in her eyes,
She wanted to marry someone rich to uplift her middle class status,
But she was out of the frying pan into the fire.

Meeting of Two Souls
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2018
We met in a park,
On a tree sang a lark,
Sweet and melodious,
The children played, squealed and laughed, riotous.
We smiled,
Our eyes locked awhile,
Silence,
Felt each other's  presence,
Strong and electric,
Dynamic.
Offered me a sandwich,
Fingers touched,
Time stopped,
Heartbeats throbbed.
Distance lost  notion,
Only emotions,
Two souls merged.

Dog walks
Salmabanu Hatim Jan 2024
My owner is a good man,
He loves to take me for long walks.
Although he keeps me on a leash for my safety,
He lets me be free,
To snoop around bushes and flower beds,
For two things I have learned,
Not to be curious,
And stay clear of people who are afraid or not like dogs.
I let a loving hand scratch my ears and ruff,
Especially young pretty ladies,
So my owner can make friends with them,
I love to lick their faces and hands to show my appreciation.
At the beach I love to run along the golden sand,
Chase seagulls to the water's edge,
Or up to the sky.
Some children throw sticks,
And I play fetch with them,
Outrunning the wind.
I understand my owner's feelings,
When his affairs don't go well,
Instead of pestering him to take me for a walk,
I look up at him and sympathise,
I cuddle up to him,
Rest my head on his lap to say,
"Don't worry I'm here for you.'
