How long has this decaying giant laid here
so silent in this thick forest dark and deep
I wonder if anyone did hear it fall
when it's aged death it did meet

Yet by it's death many will benefit
and life will shelter in it's rotten limbs
from grubs to small rodents
do dwell in safety and comfort within

So from it's mighty death
life does now spring
see the fungus
that proliferates it's skin

This tree that died so long ago
maybe in rain and high winds
or in wicked ice and heavy snow
the dead giant is a wonder that's all I know
