The phone rings.
I answer.
"How are things?"
"I've cancer."
"God, mom, I—"
"It's OK."
"Will you die?"
"Soon, they say."
I'm silent.
My words fail.
Cigarette:

"So take care."
(My voice shakes.)
"Hang in there."
(My heart breaks.)
