War
I remember the day that you left
Goodbyes hard to accept
Through the tears I wept I wished you best
Heading off to war

We both know, although you never wrote
Deaths cold hands were always close
To pull the plug on those with little hope
Surrounded by the war

You kept your eyes open wide at night
A certain caution mixed with fright
Taking all you had just to survive
Living in this war

You held the scenes of memories
Where you once kept your sanity
With ears as drums to your heartbeat
Playing out this war

You counted ways with endless days
How long ago had you felt safe
Was it before you gave your soul away
Inside of this war

So many questions I would have asked
Through tear filled eyes I try and accept
That on the day you up and left
You never returned from war
