Sandcastles
I’m fond of you, he said
in the way that small children
are fond of building castles
out of sand
that will slip through
your fingers at
the slightest touch
I was happy, though
to think that someone
could be “fond” of me
giddy, gleeful, grateful
I would trade my
solid stone walls
to live in a castle
made of sand
with a man
who was fond
(but not in love)
slipping through
my fingers
as soon as
we touched
