The land is the inheritor
of the voices of the universe
the eternal faithful keeper
the unfailing and gracious nurse.

She shares the joys and sorrows
of mankind from time's beginning
the harbinger of hopeful tomorrows
her generosity knows no ending.

Men come and then they depart
each an imprint does leave behind
she remembers all in her faithful heart
every word she speaks is tender and kind.

Human life is strife-ridden
the land is all peace and calm
where the most beautiful and sublime is begotten
and the lushest harvest is the promised outcome.
* dedicated to Yoko who lives in Nara. She is a gifted calligrapher and holds exhibitions in Japan. She will translate the poem into Nihongo. I met her and her husband Takeshi (a flautist) in Melbourne two months ago.
