you littered my life
with breadcrumbs of you
knowing i'd take every step
that led me closer to the edge
where you stood

and i didn’t walk,
darling,
i ran toward those baby blues

and perhaps you underestimated
my ability to sprint
and perhaps i underestimated
your ability to dodge
and perhaps we underestimated
the height of that cliff
and the depth of that fall

you watched
and i felt
as my bleeding heart
broke down there at the bottom,
looking at you up there
perfectly intact on your pedestal,
feeling further from you
than i had ever before

distance
is the result of the fall
distance
is the price you pay
for leading me to you
distance
is the price i pay
for getting too close
distance
is the price we pay
for playing with love
i'm learning to stand again

but it's going to be a while
before i'm capable
of convincing my
heart, mind, and legs
to get close to you again
