He sat down beside me
On a bench
I scooted down about
An inch
Pretending I couldn’t
Smell his stench
As a matter of fact
I didn’t flinch

He was a fellow
Human being
Who lives his life
Largely unseen
As if that were
Peachy keen
When in fact
It’s obscene

In a land
That’s blessed with plenty
Tell me why
We have so many
Homeless people
Even when they
Clearly need someone
Who can be

Depended on
For a helping hand
Cuz we can fix this
Oh yes we can
If we come up
With a plan
To eradicate homelessness
From this land
