I  hear church bells ringing
And all the voices singing
There's always a revival somewhere
Resurrecting faith from its despair

I spent a lot of time in the pews
Kneeling, praying about the news
I remember a word called freedom
It’s for me to choose the right kingdom

Religion for the masses
That’s where the cash is
Alms for the poor
Alms for the poor
I'm not knockin' on that back door
I’d rather pray alone in a closet
God's not inside somebody’s wallet

I saw a girl wearing a scarf on her head
I smiled but she frowned instead
I wonder if she thought I only saw her skin
But I was looking for beauty from within

I can’t change the world that much is true
But I can change someone’s day
And my friends are where my cross will lay
But there’s a man standing on the corner
Jesus wonders if he will know you

Religion for the masses
That’s where the cash is
Alms for the poor
Alms for the poor
I'm not knockin' on that back door
I’d rather pray alone in a closet
God's not inside somebody’s wallet
