Just before sunrise beyond the sandy beaches of a never ending shore. I put out on a board and listen to the waves churn about me. I go out to the point where the horizon seems to join the sun. I turn my board towards the land and sit quietly and wait. Gulls fly overhead as I sit surrounded by others like myself, yet I am still alone. In one instance, the ocean begins to rise up. I paddle forward into the morning spray. The wave catches me and takes me forward. I am caught in the first curl of the day, as I try to become the master of myself while embracing the power of an ocean wave. I let it carry me and simply guide my board on the path it sets. Until the breaker subsides and I float into calmer waters. I settle into a lull and catch my breath, as I come off of an emotional high. Then I draw together my strength, and turn my board once more to the horizon, hoping to catch another wave before the day comes to an end.
