Dead Poets Society
Michael Marchese Sep 2017
We poets are teachers
The artists, the leaders
The dreamers, the weavers
Of minds of the infinite
Wisdom conceivers
The gods that you worship
Were made in our image
The heroes you envy
Are born of our wrath
To walk in the steps
Of our off-beaten path
We are mythical martyrs
On whimsical quests
To tickle your fancies
And beat in your chests
When you lock it away
We are there with the key
And a piping hot cup
Of divine empathy
For we feast on your pain
And we dine on your pleasure
We bask in the sun
Of the stormiest weather
And none may deny us
The power we hold
Not an ocean of greed
Nor a mountain of gold
Can stop us or touch us
For we own the skies
The angels you honor
Composed of our songs
Yes we poets are muses
The Tantalus juices
The shapers, the wakers
Of your inner-peace in this life
We are makers

The Risks of Gambling
Michael Marchese May 2017
All I seem to own is shame
When life's a pass-go paper game
Objective is to stay alive
Subjective is how we survive
When roulette is the system
And for-profit is the mission
Of conversion to the currency
Indulgences we currently
Feed into like a slot machine
For triple 7's 'cross the screen
The drama queens and heartless kings
A full house of the finer things
These yachts are really oil rigs
To riches of the mansion cigs
Coal hash it out before we melt
Or lose before your hand is dealt
'Cuz empty plates and stomachaches
Are all that waits our highest stakes
If penthouse playboys place their greed
On not-so blackjack sheep to lead

Howling to the werewolf moon
The only light I've shed
Upon my corpse bride's runaway
And zombies that I've fled
Running from vampiric tongues
That licked their lips and said
Forget me not the wicked witches'
Poisons that you've bled
Or Frankenstein creations
Of the afterlives you've led
And cemeteries searching for
A place to rest your head
Dressed in black the pallbearers
Of caskets that you dread
All manner of these elegies
You wrote when you were dead
Have ever been the only hands
To tuck you into bed

Where heroes go I may not know
Nor dare I venture even guess
How any of the guilty rest
Within unending Hades woe

Yet wandering the shores of Styx
I’ve written tales of gallantry
Befitting none more valiantly
Resisting this infernal bliss

Still waiting for the veil to lift
On maenads vying for this verse
Compassion is my lover’s curse
To them my empathy a gift

But wicked thieves ensnare my heart
Still stained in shadow’s lyric ink
The instrumental missing link
Is little more than broken art

To after living’s parallel
Bemusing state ecstatic trance
Revealing after second glance
My spirit freed in Asphodel

I summon the depths
With Titanic defiance
Usurping the summit’s
Olympian tyrants
But still find their kind
An enchanting intrigue
When the real love affairs
Of this world
Have aggrieved
And deceived me more often
Than yielded the truth
Bittersweet
As I reach
For the Tantalus fruit
Still eluding me
Not before
Offering glimpses
Of nymphs seal my fate
To a constant ellipsis

Michael Marchese Feb 2017
Tonight there is quiet
And peace in the solace
Of knowing tomorrow provides
Plentiful harvests of value
To blighted and meaningless lives

Awoken to half-empty purpose
To pour from a cup of concerns
Is like watering gardens with salt of the earth
Empathy blooms only nightshade it seems
If roses know not of their worth

But why do we covet these thorny expressions
Untouchable as they may be
What so possesses the florist's seed sowing
Such colorful flowers, bouquets to be sold
When all of them wither and die without knowing

The answer to why in this vase they grow old

Words have such a funny little way
Of saying just enough
A means through which the end conveys
Intangible dimension stuff
Composed of immaterial
Surrealist bits and pieces
Decomposing in ethereal
Extinction level species
At the pinnacle of pensive
We incessantly conceive
Perceptions formed in the defense of
Higher beings we believe
And often give it all to see
Their rightful place among the stars
And as we fell the final tree
We do it all again on Mars
As discontent with our successes
As we are amidst the bliss
Of failure’s most enlightened guesses
To elucidate what any of this

Heaven is no place to rest
Or acquiesce to ignorance
More sacred than thou's holiest
Oblivious omniscience

A bliss you think you understand
The powers of each son of man
Entitle him to own this land
As kingdoms under one command

Usurp the throne to which your bounds
Have left you chained to lesser crowns
Then take your highest mortal grounds
And put them down with dogma hounds

Look around and feel the earth
Absolve you of all sin and worth
Desire tombs devalued dirt
Has ever been your afterbirth

Just cut the cord and leave the den
The lone wolves pen this story's end
While counting sheep just play pretend
That lion's share the true godsend

Here I stand as Sauron's bane
Within the chasm doom
I fear the darkness of my prize
Could rival Angmar's tomb
As his master's malice echoes
Tongues of ages past
Drowning out Lord Elrond's cries
Into the fires cast!

Yet could its will so dominate
This Middle-Earth now bade
Free from ruin I hath smote
With but a stroke of Narsil's blade
Perhaps a tool so powerful
Could I now use to lead
Should come the Men of Numenor's
Utmost end of need

Now in my fingers as it turns
My grayest thoughts to gold
I shan't release it from my grasp
For it is mine to hold
Yes it came to me, my own
A gift meant for a king
I must possess the qualities
Of this most precious ring

Human desires
Cross seldom the mind
Of one who has shifted
The need paradigm
Yet often I find
Myself craving a taste
Of her strawberry field
Or the diamond embraces
Of nothing is real

To think and to feel
Cascading emotion
Is still but a drop
In infinity's ocean
Intangible quotient
The product of self
The sum of its parts
Is but dust on the shelf

And there lives an elf
Who communes with the trees
His arrows of wind
Sailing evergreen seas
As he writes eulogies
Detached from the world
For his dying earth mother
As time keeps on turning
Mankind on each other

Stop and think before
You take another step away
Consider what you leave behind
In venturing astray
Yet also what perhaps, you'd find
Out their beyond the known
You never know what self-discoveries
Are waiting to be shown
When they reveal themselves to you
You may be pleased
You left your home
Or may in longing to return to it
Get lost and feel alone
But the adventure
Yes, the journey
Is a lesson to be learned
So I exhort your curiosity
To leave no stone unturned
And never fear what could be under
Heaping piles of facile
Easy roads that expedite
This life
As merely a time trial
For the walk
Within the park is nice
But why not roll
Good fortune's dice
Just once or twice
C'mon and test your luck
And what your future has in store
Or what you make of it
In tirelessly
Searching,
Seeking more

Not saying I like it
Just how that it works
The deletist type brightest
In caverns we lurks
And we hungers
And wonders
Why these rolling thunders
Still storm through the deserts
And homes torn asunder
The poorest pulled under
The war is swept under
The covers
The monsters and terrors are out there
Two lovers
Come back here to make a new start
Some new art
Then the silence between them
Just rips it apart
Like Cupid is cute but he’s stupid
The truth
Is the fear
That your heart doesn’t really or actually break
But some dreamer just takes it and makes it awake
Like you finally care about
Some other thought
You’re no longer concerned with
The ones you were taught
In the eyes turned to stone
By the furies they wrought
Upon ignorance
All the injustice perceived
In a world lost together
In us we’d believe
That it’s all meant to be
There was you, there was me
And from there it was frozen
And stranded at sea
For there’s always the one
That you just want to lie with,
Always the one that you still want to try with,
Always the one that your spilling guts cry with,
Always the one you so perfectly vibe with,
Always the one you can’t stop the goodbyes with,
Always the one you would **** to survive with,
Never the one that you ever will DIE WITH

Medusa my muse
Can you not be alone
Do you need me to choose
How you turn me to stone

No venom laments
Or cold, lifeless stare
Could halt my attempts
To freeze in your glare

Your hair although snakes
Your scales worn in shame
Your frigid heart breaks
Claiming mine all the same

Your mirrored dejection
Remaining concealed
But beauty reflects in
My Perseus shield

I let down my guard
And lower my blade
The gods left you scarred
And ravaged, unmade

Poseidon's fell sin
Athena's wrath scorn
Only hardens my skin
To match your sad form

In cavernous depths
I see your true face
Now take my last breaths
With your gorgon embrace

Medusa your gaze
Be it mine alone
Show me the ways
You can turn me to stone

Should consider myself lucky
That I made it this far,
Thus far strong
But not without
Problems along
The way
The same things
Different day
I came here seeking change
In vain
The dynamism
That I crave
To make my sinful soul
Worth saving
Keeps escaping
From my sight
Delusions waking
Me each night
Well-rested
Wrested
From my eyes
My cardiac,
Arrested, dies
Class-struggle-tested
Body lies
Somewhere no one
Will ever find
It rotting
Robotting
Going through the motions
Only
Fixing
Nothing's broken
Just the parts
And processors
That ever doubt
This all absurd
And words I choose
To make me human
Once again
Are ancient ruins

Final frontier
I tread on death's
Devoid of fear

A Black Plague rat
A great white shark
I am the depths
And caverns dark

A dormant rage
Volcano lair
Don't wake my sleeping
Grizzly bear

Or he will smash
This buzzing hive
And eat the honey
They contrive

Each saddled mustang
Spirit freed
Mere show ponies
To my stampede

Which fills this earth's
Tectonic plates
With rumblings from
My stomach quakes

Raised by wolfpacts
Of my youth
To share the fruits
Of sun-kissed truth

To teach the herds
To reach these peaks
And paint the skies
With toucan beaks

Yet still my rose
Adds one more thorn
Each time you steal
My tusk and horn

So wildfire
Blood is ice
I thunder strike
The same place twice

A crown of sticks
And sharpened stone
The roots of my
Sequoia throne

Just try and tame
My lion's mane
You'll get lost in
My jungle brain

The hurricanes
No floods can cease
Emoceanal
Disasterpiece

My eagle wings
Embrace the squall
I trip on shrooms
Then waterfall

A monkey see
Just doing me
Without this pen
A chimpanzee

Disguised as flags of patriotic
Stories never told
By your tongue of solid gold
Your wealth piled by the load
When all the soldiers had to go
Did you humble your abode?
No, you left us in the cold
And only got us fired
On a ******* tv show

While you sat upon your throne
And thought your little thoughts,
Licked your little fingers dry
Of all the wars we've fought
In the streets you've never sought
To help rebuild the crumbling structures
Just the ones you'd bought
And only sold your soul
To the devils you hath wrought
Deep inside you're black as coal
The gaping hole within this plot
Americans that you see not
In a mind so closed and rotten
To the shallows of its core
Lies these faces all forgotten

In the deep blue sea puddles
We couldn't admit

Though I melted like snow
In your summer sun smile
It's howling moon glow
Ne'er eclipsing denial

For you were the tune
To my violin strings
Rain drops to the bloom
Of my free phoenix wings

On peregrinations
To bring us together
New born consummations
To give you forever

Still you couldn't see
My mushroom cloud skies
Explode with a beauty
That rivaled your eyes

Or echo the sound
Of my metalcore chamber
Quaking the ground
With Vesuvian anger

To hell with the heavens
My goddess is here
What more divine presence
Than love did you fear

Or struggled much to find
The words that could describe to you
The chaos of my mind
I just can't find the ones to say
Exactly how I feel
Or felt
Or will feel for you still

Your passion was an ocean
An ambition with no bounds
Tranquil rebel hurricane
Of righteous fury sounds
Your flare was of horizon suns
Untouchable devotion
To set upon the world in peace
And keep the earth in motion

We left no trace out in the woods
And got thrown out of bars
We burned oppressions to the ground
And then lit up the stars
We blew off doing homework
My house was next to yours
We just hung out like normal kids
Avoiding all their chores

You shared with me the benefits
Of vegan life subsistence
While I explained dimensions
Of a limitless existence
You were everything I wanted
In a serious decision
The perspective that I needed
To then clarify my vision

So never was it hard to be
An anarchist with you
Yet still defend and advocate
Moralities we knew
Still too good to be true
Was often how I'd feel
Wondering how could this woman
Possibly be real

In every rebel yell I roar
In every day I wake
But as you have stood beside me
So you now provide me strength
To move these mountains
Yet to cross
And span these seas at length
For we have seen them rise and fall
And disappear behind us
Serving something more than self
These obstacles remind us
None too tall and vast and grim
Withstood the rolling tide
Through highs and lows
We found the beach
No storm could have denied
Now again I charge headlong
Into the great unknown
The blue and grey still looming

And all I remember
Has not come to pass
And all I have learned

And in this exile
I dwell on her still
Still enslaved to the loom
And the field, and the whip
Still bound to the chains
Of my Amistad ship
And if conscience is clear
Then my guilt is the sea
Now for her I drown
In this humanity
So perhaps I may save us

A single mere taste
Of her garden of Eden
The one I have wandered
Alone in the skies
As her waterfalls poured
From my mystified eyes
Her celestial voice
Whispered into my ear
Ven conmigo mi amor

Then she made me a man
With the soul of a beast
And together we dined

Live for the moment
Each day to disown this
Existence is merely
A meaningless omen
And death is a heartbeat away
Win or lose
Inescapable, so don’t allow it
To choose
Your decisions, discussions
And reasons to care
For some better world waiting
To save you out there
It is yours, it is mine
It is all of us time
And with or without us
The sun will still shine
So please pardon me young king
You’re blocking the glow
I have offered my wisdom
And now you must go

Getting the Part
Michael Marchese Nov 2024
We all have a role to play
Function to perform
Within society
We try to be
A little less forlorn
About the whole entire
Universal
Existential
Crisis
Seeking purpose
From the worthless
Void
That even now
Must write this
Affirmation
Of self-righteousness
What validates the strife
A simple note
A memory
And in totality
Is life

The Cold Warrior
Michael Marchese Dec 2017
You have to let the thinkers think
The dreamers dream
The speakers speak
The schemers scheme
The wolves among us feast on sheep
The shepherds teach them how to reap
The harvest of community
The plenty space for unity
If being free is what we want
Equality must be the need
Prioritized beyond our profit
Mass-producing greed machine
Still colonizing everything
Then selling you the diamond ring
The social contract theory bomb
The buffer states that look like Guam
And from the satellites they beam
That perfect family fifties feeling
Reaching for your credit card
With isolation’s *** appealing
Movie star aestheticism
Gaping black hole fetishism
Whispering it’s holiest
Pale ghosts of fascist soviets
Still letting all the thinkers think
The dreamers dream
The speakers speak
The schemers scheme

As money sorts the in-between

Artemis
Michael Marchese Dec 2017
She guards the chirping cricket pastures
Meadows in the morning dew
Anew she leaves me chasing stars
In full she makes me once in blue

By night I harvest Halloween’s
A waning crescent is my dreams

Of her fair maiden in the glade
Displayed, can’t keep the hounds at bay
Her darkest-sided serenade
My huntress, come now light my way

Dying Suns/Copernicus
Michael Marchese Nov 2016
Geocentric conscious shrouds
Revolve around illusion clouds
To find the stars
We search the earth
And watch our suns die out from birth

Red giant idealistic youth
Pursuing supernova truth
Ambitions of
Infinite space
In time dark matters shall erase

No solace in maturity
Just rise and fall obscurity
Alone out here
Burning to show
The universe how bright you glow

Revelations of these fusions
Conflagrations of delusions
To bugs racing
Towards the end
Diminishing the light you lend

Horizons never reachable
Your energies unteachable
Nebulous
Dreams come to pass
Unfulfilled old ball of gas

Life stages shrinking us sequential
Makes quasars of our potential
Growing cold
In voids bereft
Until black holes are all that's left

Star-Crossed Embraces
Michael Marchese Dec 2016
No void could disgrace
These two distant wishes
Lost and alone
Yet finding their place
By onwardly glowing
To search for the end
Of this dark, empty space
Or perhaps just a moment in time
To collide and explode
In a star-crossed embrace

Just one of the misfits
The mystics
The mythic
Enthusiasts  scripting
My own hieroglyphic
Codex to keep written
Recordings
Just jot
A few thoughts
Down each day
To see how they all look
Rearranged on the page
And that even I can't
Comprehend of this message
Perhaps in the future
Invaluable lesson
Is gleamed
From what seems
To be power mad schemes
But this world I will leave
Having not conquered even
A parcel of land
For I already hold
The whole world in my hand

Are You Fine?
Michael Marchese Dec 2018
Not the first person
Rehearsing the act
But I am the original
Matter of fact
When it comes to rejecting
Unfounded conjecture
Confounding foundations
Of your private sector
As baseless, in basements
Of faceless persona
Unknown to this Brave New World's
Self-indulge soma
A rarefied pride
Coinciding with time
That it takes
To be finally
Fine
You will find
I am easily vexed
And hard-pressed
To detect
Every ***** in the armor
Flawed system's
Oppressed
Populations complacent
Awaiting their fate
In a nation-state
Trading the world
Some more greatness

White Winter's Lament
Michael Marchese Oct 2016
Of pale moon ghosts I reminisce
  on how I've froze
  in powdered woes
And nothing good can come of this
  struck by love's
  snow lightning doves
And Lady Winter's frigid kiss
   like icebergs loosening my lips
   and sinking my relationships
In blizzards of cold-blooded bliss
  fearless should the pulsing stanch
  invincible my avalanche
All need for warmth I could dismiss
when old King Candy cuts it clean
  in palaces of Queen Frostine
Pure wonderlands of happiness
  melt into my slippery streets
than soon the Santa's sleigh retreats
Face down on pavements of abyss
the black becomes all I can see
come take this white away from me
Forget this ******* emptiness

Entrust me with yours
Then I'll show you mine
In time, and in return I ask
Please keep them to yourself
For I share them all in confidence
Only with my midnight muse
Clandestine common senses
But my daybreak heart betrays
These covert black ops missions
And free speech end transmissions
Are but fake news to my secret codes
In messages to save this world
By over-writing border walls
To reach my girl enclosed behind
Her loosened lipstick gossip stalls
No rumors of my wedding vows
Just passing notes in class
For small-talk minded pleasantries
The distance in between these desks
I cirle only yes to ***
For deeper in the libraries
Of my unrest, a new behest
Still checks me out without request
For overdue confessions
Speaking unrequited volumes
To my hard-cover depressions
Introspections leather-bound
By ancient lore transgressions
In my most restricted sections
Still each page she turns to understand
The mysteries contained inside
This sacred pen within my hand
Michael Marchese Apr 2023
Illusory solace
Is sadness at peace
Though some shred of subversion
I’ve yet to unleash
In its rabid
Hysteria
Yearns to be free
But society
Renders it
Tranquility
For contenders to thrones
Highly coveted
Cling
To a power
Imbalance
Not fit for a king
They would sooner see fear
Run amok
In the streets
And appease its bloodlust
By the number of seats
That their side of the
I’ll
Serve merely
Myself
Or the party,
The lobby,
The way of the belt
