Maybe one day
in the far off future
I'll see you in the street
and you'll tell me about
your new life, your new family
and i'll smile and say
'I'm glad it all worked out'
but it will be a facade
to mask the bitter pain
of knowing that despite everything
you moved on,
you loved again
whilst I, well...
I look for you in everyone.

The sun is setting like
An ethereal scarlet orb behind
The naked tree, whose light
Shines behind spindly branches
In rays that I mistook for
God's fingers when I was young,
Before my innocence had wilted like
Those red leaves that litter the ground
This time of year and release
That earthy smell that we mistake for
Autumn but is actually
Decay.

You put down your defences for me
So, darling why did you call them back?

Slowly, then all too suddenly,
Just as I came to love you,

I find that we are

We have no business meddling with unicorns,
fantasy beasts, and lands afar.
The make-believe things do not believe in you.
They have no weapons of war.
They pose no threat to the American Dream.
Besides,
they are perfectly capable of harming themselves,
and our work here has only begun.

I miss just holding your hand
and making you giggle
as the people that past
knew love was here at last
and children bright eyed smiled
at us just holding hands.
