Unless your bucket list is in pencil
Unless you’re content in front of your television
And your eyes see better than your heart does
If you heard on the radio that intellect killed hope
And read on the message board that we never needed hope in the first place
Unless you see unfiltered
And the light in your eyes is not a reflection of anywhere you’ve been
If there is nothing out there
And you’ve seen it before anyway
Take note:

When every metaphor ever built
Has fallen apart
Love will be a voice saying, here I am
Saying fight to take that deep breath one more time
Find me up ahead and run to me
The horizon isn’t as far away as you made it out to be
And looking over the edge will be the sweetest thing you have ever done

When every metaphor ever built
Has fallen apart
Love will still be saying: “get out there and find me” as directly as it can
Pleading with you to be a part of something bigger
Something lasting and dangerous
And hard to believe
The evidence is the beauty that you’ve seen
Miracles are not so different than dappled light through the canopy of trees
And that judging by the way it dances down the creek bed, water must hear music that no one else seems to believe
But there is a peace in that music
And a whisper in that dance
And if you listen long enough
You will feel some of your coarseness wash away
And that refinement is love
Look, even the stones lose their edge
Here’s to saying: “Look!”
To saying “You have to see this!”
To: “Come with me!”
“Let’s go!”
“Hurry!”
“Don’t miss this!”
“We’re explorers!”
“Let’s get out there!”
Adventure is only half going
The other half is who goes with you
The eighth wonder of the world is being together
And while all stories will end they can be shared forever
No paradise is complete alone
But love is an eternal home

When all metaphors ever built
Have fallen apart
Love will still be saying
Get out there
Find me
This poem was actually inspired by a photo submitted to my website as part of a little contest I held. Thanks to Jolene OBrien for the photo, which you can see at anthempoet.com
A beautiful boy,
with eyes like emeralds,
and heart full of sadness
deep enough to break boulders.
I wanted to heal his scars,
but I suppose
I should worry about my own first,
because Jameson bottles,
are not the best medication
but god it tastes so fine
and I wanted you to kiss me,
the way I kissed you,
but we don't always get what we want
*no matter how bad I want it
Everyone loves a poem
But much more when its sung

If you want to be remembered
Better to hum than flick your tongue
I refuse to accept that you are leaving
because you always leave
it is in your nature
and I am used to that
but this time you are going
to a place that I can not reach
and I do not know how I will make it
but ******* it, I am so happy for you
because you are getting out
and you are growing up
though you need not to
(wise beyond your years)
you will grow a garden with your words
and you will dye your hair eight different colors
before I get to see you and hold you again
and I will love you more with each passing moon
but oh my darling, my beautiful sunflower
how I am going to miss you so
every second of every single day
-
(please, don't leave
I would do anything
to keep you in my pocket
forever and always)
If you’re driving home from a friends house
in twilight and soggy muscles
I hope you’re rolling down your windows
For fresh air
And the way it widens your eyes
To pines beyond the roadside
Freeing the world to hear Matlida

Home in 10 minutes
But for ten minutes you are free
To appreciate windy road, solitude,
And what was given in summer nostalgia

Should I give more attention?
a tree than a stone?
because one is softer?
or has longer been 'lone?

We’re home.
You have never known my pain
Until you have to cover every inch of yourself,
Tugging sleeves and pants in the heat;
Tape on a smile to mask the anxiety in your eyes,
Longing for the intimacy your flawed skin won't allow.
You have never known my pain
Until the shower cleans more than sweat and dirt.
It becomes a hiding place that cleans the shadows from your soul.
Until you fear every pair of eyes, even your own.
You have never known my pain
Until you have carried the scars I do
And hidden yourself away from the light in your life
Cowering in the darkness, somehow you don’t deserve the light that tries to find you

If you do know my pain, my god, how my heart aches with yours
If you bear these scars, my god, how my soul weeps with yours
If you do share this pain, my god, feel my hand in yours
But before you jump, open your ears and listen
My god, my heart sings for the future I know you hold
Because I finally saw mine
And my god, don’t you know that you don’t have to jump to fly?
Before I begin, let me make one thing perfectly clear:
Everything I’ve ever given a **** about, I’ve been unabashedly critical of.
So believe me when I say that I appreciate ever word out of your mouth I’ve spanned the distance to hear.
You have all these years that you hang over my head, dangling them, subtly mocking from the end of a thread.
Yes, darling, you’re well aged and well-read but I’ll be ****** if I will let my experiences be invalidated by a few years and your fiery, well-meaning arrogance, let that be heard as it’s said.
It’s true that you know me better than most but don’t get it twisted. You sure as hell don’t know me better than me.
Pretend all you like that I’m buttered-up and convinced that your life lessons and late night calls have set me free, but you know as well as me that’s a lie fed through your precious mind’s teeth.
I boil and I freeze so I know I can stand the heat, but just remember one thing:
You’re intense and addictive but baby, the scorpion still stings.
And one twin will **** well bite while of your praises the other sings.
I watched the film
not because she told me to,
but because she told me she enjoyed it.
You must understand how important this is.
Dedicated to KR, because she won't read it for a month or so.
