Taoism
When the world
regards me as wise
my freedom I'd have lost-
when I'm set aside
I'll be in no way agonised
A hero
can also be
a villain -
this is harsh reality
In response to a post on Norman Vincent Peale:

Norman Vincent Peale whom we read in our youth was a motivator, not a thinker.  A proponent of positive thinking, he was able to sway thousands but he never had depth.

His thinking and standing have been over-estimated.

The same applies to the thinking of William Clement Stone and Napoleon Hill and many undistinguished  others'.

The first positive thinking founders were Confucius and his most ardent discipline, Mencius. Re: THE ANALECTS of Confucius and THE BOOK OF MENCIUS.

They both upheld these thoughts:

human nature is inherently good; it can be perfected by self-cultivation which leads to 'ren' ( benevolence/ human-heartedness); this makes the 'superior man' (junzi) who excels in love, compassion, virtue, righteousness, decorum, altruism, selflessness, sincerity, loyalty, wisdom, filial piety, respect for elders and others, who serve as role-model for people and who is qualified to serve as ***** servant and contribute to the well-being of society and the nation.  He seeks morality while the xiaoren (the inferior person) who seeks only profit or benefit.

It is evident from the above that such a philosophy is life-affirming and brings out the best postiof human goodness.  This indisputably is the root of positive thinking long before modern thinking on the subject.

There is much merit in cognitive behavioural therapy founded by Alan Beck with Albert Ellis and Martin Seligman as exponents.  CBT is based on positive psychology and its influence will continue ti grow in these days of stress, anxiety, depression and existential angst.

Bearing Confucian psychology on the subject enriches our understanding and also throws light on the similarity of Eastern and Western thinking in this regard.

A silly ditty!

After the Deluge
After the deluge
a new order
has emerge -
the past
will be buried
and we
who have  existed
in that episode
have now assumed
the mantle
of leadership
a better world
a Utopia indeed
to create-

we must not fail:
the future
shall remember
what we've done
and said
all of which
shall be enshrined
in its book-
our struggle
our sweat
our tears
and our history
it will faithfully record.

Myself in time
The world
I can neither change
nor in any way save
but I can
give comfort
or hope
where I engage
and looking back
from the faraway
of time, I'll deem that
the life I've lived
is adequate
with nothing wasted

On Music
Music spreads its wings all over the firmament. It lights up the world below---a myriad of sounds and colours burst from the river of its soul so poignantly—an invitation to the realm of endless beauty and wonder. Music says: life is for love, beauty, joy and celebration and all that which transcends over pain and sorrow- first the suffering but, lo, the light shines after the end of the dark tunnel and once more our hearts revive and we begin to embrace life all over again, in greater intensity and gratitude. The heart breaks a thousand times but is reborn--even if such resurrection comes very slowly. Life is an endless river and we flow with it but it is only in love and faith, in patience and the pursuit of truth that we become what we dreamt to be. Once we have arrived at the pinnacle of what our heart has longed for over so many years of the past, we will then be larger than life--and even death itself- those who dwell in love and faith live immortally in their hearts.
In reply to an intellectual friend

We can't speak of the general when it comes to faith or belief,
we are in our own land- we stand alone, regardless of what others think or say. Kindly explore and this might change your mind.
Millions upon millions, and with Taoism, it's hundreds of millions, who  have found truth, meaning, peace, joy, beauty, hope, acceptance, consolation and courage, even in their conquering of death and despair.

If you haven't tried or experienced, of that you can't speak.

Kind wishes

yours humbly

Peter

Common Fancy
We idealise
and idolise
as life is deemed
to be drab and dry
but are later agonised
as reality wakes
and sweeps away
all that
we've in error
over-prized

I'll not speak
I'll not speak
as by words
I've been deluded

we'll forget
those happy moments
of sizzling youth

time has spoken
we have changed
each has taken a different route

you should not speak either
nothing would come out good
new joy we might find--let fate impute
Life is layers upon layers
of memories
in the labyrinth
of the mind
of every kind-

a present event
or a feeling
or a mood
an imagination
will trigger
their appearance
which will have
to be processed
or attended-
it's helpless
to fight or desist -

memories upon memories
coalesce into a maze
in the kaleidoscope
of time- one's personal life
is written and shaped
in some strange image.

The Birth of a new Era
Dr Peter Lim May 12
No one
could put a halt
or bury an idea
which has found
its time and is bold
enough to shatter
the very foundation
of  falsehood
that has kept
mankind captive
and deceived
the most intellectual
of minds-

the game
is over
no more
the charade-
truth shall rise
to set
in a new era
and the die
shall be
inexorably cast-

lies shall die
the mask
of false prophets
shall be stripped-
no longer
shall life
be dehumanised:
a new voice
shall echo
over every corner
there shall
be a new order
that all mankind
shall readily embrace
and trust

They and I
Dr Peter Lim May 12
I've to go away
myself to renew:
it's too crowded
and noisy here
life doesn't ring true
with voices clamouring
to be heard and slogans
being painted
in public walls
and 'save the world' gurus
are unwilling
to cease
their uncompromising

I've had enough
of exhortations
which are bursting
my ears-
if to myself
I wish to be true
I'll have
to withdraw
from this cacophony
to find myself
Dr Peter Lim May 12
From Chopin's diary, through my eyes

So calm, gentle and tender is the night
though there's no moon, stars or  the faintest light
my heart wells never as before in such longing and sorrow
let my music tell my heartbreak-story though I know

love , the love of my life, will not once gain return
while my feelings within me so grievously burn
at this hour so bereft and solemn as I write my Nocturne
if I've died a thousand times,  for this love I'll still tearfully yearn

An Anthem of Life
Dr Peter Lim May 12
We refuse to be
a footnote of time only
but to wear life on our sleeve
not a single moment to miss-

we will never be
but the remnant of history
its tide we'll rise over
to become our saviour and master-

we will not die
in regret or sigh
nor lose out in default
we make our unequivocal call

when the last hours should fall
the best of ourselves we'll recall
no beauty nor love have we left behind
and all that lives within us is noble and sublime

A pebble am I
Dr Peter Lim May 11
I'm no pearl
only a pebble
hidden under
the sand of time
unknown
to be discovered
by none-
yet I don't complain
or moan-
what I am
happily I accept
being just alone
a tiny stone-

the rose
has my pity
it blows
and loses
its beauty
when the sun
loses its glow
and admirers
are gone

a pebble I am
free to the bone
my life
as in
a perfect cone
abiding
consistent
unchanging
with nothing
to atone.

The now
doesn't exist
but for the past
and there will be
no tomorrow
but for the present now-

time has ceaseless wheels
it turns and turns
on its unstoppable heels
leaving us aghast

we'll lose count
we can't follow
time's moving around
only to be
a cog therein
and unheard
will be our sound
Dr Peter Lim May 10
There's no such thing
as a wasteland
there will always be
some small patch
that's worthy
to be claimed
for ready hands
to sow, to grow
to harvest
to tame
later to name
this is not
wasted land-

and here
on this edge
I'm proud
to proclaim:
this I've created
as sacred land
where love
and purpose
I've lent.
