The cost of living
Is ever spiraling up
Quality downward
Haiku
When I was just three
I was given a tin drum
I played it all day
and into the evening
next day I could not find it
kinda tired tonight
trying to pay attention
and failing badly
Senryu
Along the winding brook side
There limped a dying knight
Helm cracked and eyes fixed wide
He stumbled without sight

From far away he had come
For glory and for crown
But now he heard a drum
That marched him surely down

Falling to his knees he sighed
"Forgive me that I cry
My Lady love, my bride
But I do not wish to die."

The sun rose up the next day
And there beneath the brush
A cold stiff body lay
Sung over by a thrush

Now listen to me my friend
There is no great glory
To meet a hero's end
In some bard's sad story
you here beside me
the soft sound of your breathing
fills my night with bliss
Senryu
I was there for you
But when my time of need came
I could not find you
A lesson learned some would say
But I am not so simple
tanka
people lie to me
and i usually notice
but never let on
Senryu
I once new a man named Tom Wylie
Who had a wife named Al he prized highly
From Saint Helena to Dar
They traveled so far
That the sun burnt their wits quite dryly
Limerick
Dedicated to my dear friends Tom and Alvina Wylie, sadly long gone from this mortal coil.
We were such good friends
We laughed and played together
Too bad we grew up
too late I found
that love and affection
frightened you so
Senryu
Ripped to shreds, torn loose
Tumbling in this cruel wind
Speeding me along
Through thoroughfares now empty
That once rang with happiness
Fulfillment and tender love
And now rasp with the torment
Of my splintered heart
Choka
Woman
Aglow, alive
Smiling, touching, flowing
Laughing goddess and woodland nymph
Lover
Cinquain
i love you deeply
you can see it in my eyes
for they cannot lie
Senryu
i have not seen you
nor heard your sweet words
forever it seems
and though the sun shines above
in a blue and verdant sky
all is dark and cold to me
my only light is memory
but do not worry for me
for i will survive and heal
and i will never forget
the love you gave me
snail tracks glisten
across the paving stone
flowers missing
Haiku
Picked up the pieces
Glued them tight within my breast
And caught the next bus
Dark blue behemoths
Those behind wearing white caps
Geese fly over
Haiku
born dead and living
my brothers and my sisters
i cherish you all
Senryu
on top of the hill
stands an old and stately house
each evening at sunset
two crows would perch together
upon the peak of its' roof
nuzzling one another
preening and softly cawing
for years they were always there
no matter what the weather
nor the season of the year
but two years ago it changed
and now only one crow sits
upon the roof at sunset
alone, hunched and unmoving
silent and forlorn
Choka
i care not for fame
i need only the love
of my family
Senryu
misleading yourself
editing reality
is a slow poison
try to see things as they are
the biggest loss you should fear
is losing yourself
Choka
Try
Try
is there anything
that i can do for you
to make you happy
to chase away all your fears
and fill you with confidence
some way that i can help you
to put a smile on your face
and allow you to be you
whatever it is you need
i will try to do
Choka
dark house, yellow light
voices, plates clattering
nighthawks fly silent
Haiku
the rain falls in tears
for the innocents now lost
slaughtered by our gods
Senryu
My heart was stolen
by a beautiful woman
she taught me to love
like i had never before
and i lost myself in her
living off the beauty there
wanting and asking for more
but she could never commit
and that is how it remained
for many wonderful years
but due to outside pressure
our lives were pulled asunder
i lost her to family
to money and to power
now i am down for the count
but i will get right back up
happy for what we did have
it was a wild crazy ride
and i love her for all that
so i wish for her the best
and i will always owe her
my undying gratitude
for sharing with me completely
her mind, her soul, her body
her beauty as a woman
every detail of her
a sublime intimacy
singed into my memory
you taught me about myself
and plumbed my capacity
to care and to empathize
and to take a chance on love
to that end i still remain
an unrepentent sinner
a believer in true love
and willing to take the fall
whenever love calls
Choka
In the deep mountains
Coral rhododendrons bloom
In the night, unseen
haiku
Yellow ochre clouds
Strumble across the dark sky
Scraping sawtooth peaks
A flash explodes, blinding me
I flee down the mountainside
Tanka
above the cliff face
spiraling ever higher
eagles soar the sun
Haiku
Up the down I strode
Rising far above the fields
Till evening came
Then, beneath a starstruck sky
Down the down I swayed and rolled
Tanka
the rain turns heavy
swirling leaves and plastic cups
race down the gutter
Haiku
I am a raven
within the urban landscape
bright eyed and mirthful
Senryu
our city once was
funky and beautiful
but now it's just slick
Senryu
lying on the couch
the sound of passing traffic
infests my music
Senryu
Us
Us
do you remember
lying on the green green grass
dreaming together
Senryu
Black etched, heavy clouds
Fell thickly off the mountains
A roiling cauldron
Dropping, down, down and over
The motel's glowing neon
behind the armoire
in dust and spider webs
lies an envelope
with a paper heart therein
a valentine unopened
a love forgotten
Choka
will it be for love
or will you sell your soul
which way will you go
back into your bubble
or out into my arms
i will wait for you
Choka
my eyes wide open
on my back on my bed
i remember you
Senryu
All that nattering
And existential ennui
Please shut up, Shut Up!
And take a look around you
Everyday is precious
Tanka
your sense of manhood
so macho and distorted
makes you deaf and blind
Senryu
a sturdy torso
a ***, two arms and two legs
transport my fat head
Senryu
waltzing a scythe
through a field of golden grass
crows walk close behind
Haiku
i never dreamt that
the sun down under my feet
tracking the night time
seeking through the star eyed murk
would teach me the value of
the coming of dawn
Choka
Was
Was
when I was but young
I was extremely complex
now i am simple
Senryu
in this cluttered life
flooded with empty data
we are all drowning
Senryu
Monday on Monday
Sensible, but most prefer
Friday on monday
Haiku
My door is open
It is oak with brass fittings
Sturdy and handsome
I oil the wood, buff the brass
And I will never close it
Tanka
The rain smashing down
Hard, fast, and spiking back high
Soaked, we laughed and ran
Through dancing pools on sidewalks
Hand in hand, slipping through leaves
What about love
what about independence
what about dreams
what about the universe
what about the big blue sky
what about coming over
what about it
Choka
You always call me
Late, wanting to come over
I always answer
Haiku
