so scream you
from rooftops and sidewalks
to barstools in dark rooms
the last pleas of a broken soul:

"i am me
and so i matter!
lift me up
on these clichés and gray hazes!
applaud me for dreaming,
and bow down to the dropout!"

so dig you
deep and wide
the void you're trying to fill,
and use it as your grave.

last time we spoke in person,
you were mumbling to yourself
because you didn't want to be real.

the day looked warm, but wasn't.
we looked warm, but weren't.
we both put on bright colors and "good intentions"
and staged a disguised tragedy
for your best friend,
your new convert,
and my bruised, pathetic, parasitic alter ego;
the one who lives in a halcyon utopia of ignorance and bliss,
the one i was trying to **** with exercise.
my legs were as sore as hell.
i had run too far,
too long
last night.
it was starting to wear on me,
and yet later i would go running again
to **** that man who was born a year ago this month.
why won't i ever give up?

and there was that abhorrent autobus!
the one that doughnutted me all the way to
Revelationville and left me there,
stranded
with no means to get home.

i took a seat.
parasite thought that maybe his work would be
rewarded, this newer body exalted,
but parasite lives in ignorance and bliss.
and there i stagnated for seventy-two minutes,
ironically,
until most of us were ordered off the bus,
but you and your best friend stayed,
which would be more like a reverse irony.

all day, i doughnutted my way around
that college campus,
that strange new world i had to adjust to.
i knew i might not attend there when i became of age,
but i memorized its hallways and corridors anyway.
every aspect of it is still preserved in my mind.
why do i do things like that?

they were testing us on things i was never taught,
and didn't understand,
like why Norman Peevey, with his visible muscle, had two girls at his sides,
and why i could hardly manage one
being handsome, as Hope and others had called it,
and nice,
and having a decent body,
and twice the personality.

they also tested us in english and creative writing.
i made the high score.

i was jettisoned out of that unfamiliar world.

and when we made it to the restaurant
i sat alone,
and you sat with friends,
but eventually invited yourself over.
your best friend did most of the talking,
so i just listened to her,
fiddling with the notepad on my ipod
until i asked, "is 'autobus' one word, or two?"
you held up one finger. "one. why?"
"i'm playing scrabble on my ipod," i lied.

why did you have to see me on a bad day?
why is every day i come within five feet of you
a "bad day"?

speeding back to that ****-infested hometown,
you were mumbling a song i knew,
about blocking out the world with headphones.
you didn't want to be real.
being real would mean talking to me.
being real would mean facing my music.

i mumbled a song to block yours out:

"you abandoned me.
love don't live here anymore."

why won't you let it die,
so you can let it be reborn,
like i have died,
only to be reborn?

I’ve read that UFO’s ride the skyways
Looking for a friendly atmosphere
But the way we treat our neighbors
The way we rattle sabres
It’s hard to find intelligent life down here

The space explorers see the humans racing
To see whose bomb can make who disappear
And the visitors must say
War seems to be their way
It’s hard to find intelligent life down here

COMPASSION’S NOT THE VALUE THEY REVERE
THE SMOKE OF WAR'S TOO COMMON ON THIS SPHERE
THE GOLDEN RULE'S OMITTED
IT’S SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
IT’S HARD TO FIND INTELLIGENT LIFE DOWN HERE

They seldom reach a plane for compromising
They don’t trust each other much I fear
And when strangers pass this way
They see morals in decay
It’s hard to find intelligent life down here..

I hope they'll love there brother
Before bombs blow up each other
It's hard to find intelligent life down here

I looked around me

For a noble man

Someone who could lead

A man a child could trust

Some man who never cheated

A man not owned by money

Some man who wouldn't lie

A man a child would trust

Some man that loves his God

Well he was hard to find

I looked at all the presidents

In the past United States

I evaluated judges and lawyers

I checked out sailors, doctors and  farmers

Just for one honest man

But none of them met the criteria

Until I remembered

Perhaps there is one

Just maybe…just maybe…

last time we spoke in person
you kissed a fogged up bus window
because you were sad.

the day was cold and gray and wet.
we were cold and gray and wet.
the bus had a blowout, there was smoke everywhere,
we pulled over.
everyone freaked out,
but we just sat there.
you were in front of me,
i was behind you,
texting each other, because we couldn't talk in person,
ever.
i had decided i was mad at you.
why was i mad, and not sad?
you had decided to make my mistake
of wanting something you just can't have.
why were you sad, and not mad?

the bus pressed onward on three wheels and a doughnut-
a wheel you want to think is there, but isn't.
and when we made it to the restaurant,
i sat alone,
and you sat alone
with friends you kept from inviting me over,
and you left
and they left
and i left.

the bus doughnutted it's way to some ****** play,
i sat on the far left,
you sat on the far right,
and they left,
and you left,
and i left.

we were waiting on something,
so you typed "hey"
and i typed "what"
and you asked me what i thought
and i said there was only one way it could have been worse.
and you asked what
but i didn't answer.

the bus doughtnutted it's way down the twisting, turning, hateful road that leads to my hometown where i can hardly pass a crack in the pavement without a painful memory, like a ****, sprouting up.

it was cold and gray and wet that day;
the bus window was foggy.
you drew a heart and scribbled initials inside.

I.

I used to be a crocodile.
I knew no risks, no tears, no joy
no excitement to lure me above water,
no work, for it was cut out for me
in the shallows with the small fish,
no heavens to make up for,
no hells to hope for,
no soul to shatter on mid-spring days
when all life is but a nightmare
and clouds are all but
******* on my head,
who granted to desired effect
that siren hoped for,
who sits upon the sandy shore
and whispers sweet songs to me, myself
evolved,
and repeats me back
the songs I taught her,
"Over and over again,"
she mocks.
How Neptune did churn his waters
to beach a loveless Odysseus here
shall ever be unbeknownst to me.
But
beeswax I have fixed in my ears,
but
now I cannot hear my other friends
in the trees.
but
once I make my flight from this island,
away from the crocodiles,
and starvation,
and sirens,
I will take it out, and
I will hear!
by God! I will hear
and be heard!

II.

No sound.

The siren's lips move;
the water recedes.
the sky grays.
the crocodiles come.
I am drawn near
by her lotus lips that bid me down this tree
but
I must not dismount.
but
a second siren in the trees
has been picking out my beeswax.
Two songs.
The reptiles draw ever nearer to
the siren, her song is the loudest.
The second siren sings a song
of warning                              and captivation.

I dismount the tree
to fight back the green menace, and save
the first siren.
I knew these fellows once.
They were my friends,
and now do I slay them.
I see only jaws and red blood now,
and now am I defeated.
The crocodile has taken her as prey,
so familiarly,
for I was a crocodile
once.

Beneath the old magnolia tree
I used to hold you close to me
And there I carved upon that tree
That I loved you and you loved me

Beneath the white magnolia blooms
You cast a spell with your perfume
I believed those wooden words were true
Ingrained in hearts of me and you

But time wears out what boys engrave
Nothing's left of the love you gave
Except that old magnolia scar....
I wish our love had come so far

Yeah, I wish those words were still on track
Cause every spring I dream me back
To tender lips and sweet perfume
Beneath the white magnolia blooms

But time wears out what boys engrave
Nothing's left of the love you gave
Except that old magnolia tree
Reminding me.....reminding me......

The poet in me
Can disappear
I’m a combo short
Without his ear
A pretender’s left
And here comes panic
Without my Muse
I get quite frantic
And chaos crowds
The remaining source
Where I’m a knight
Without a horse
A wordsmith here
Unqualified
To pick my brain
Just pushed aside
Robotic words
Will cross my page
The day grows dark
On life’s old stage
Longfellow looks down
Laughter booming
At the tripe I write
So non consuming
My ego falls
My pride goes limp
And one hung low
Is no Chinese ****
So I send prayers
From my antenna
To reach my Muse
My lost breadwinner
How could one think
Him but a myth
I lost my flow
I lost my pith
Oh here he comes
With lines exact
I'm me again
My Muse is back

oh, god bless america,
the nation of narcissistic narcoleptics,
and protect her from harm
while she takes her afternoon nap.

oh, god save the stagnant,
all living to die,
so their bellies may be crowded
and their hearts pounding
so fast,
so fast,
for you, heavenly father.

give us this day
our daily fourty-four ounce soft drink
and quarter pound burger...
and don't forget the fries.

and forgive us our intolerance,
just as we...
err...
nevermind.

forgive us,
for we know not what we do.

amen.

If I could figure out the snit that I’m in now,
and understand the state, and how I got there
then perhaps I’ll get a sense of where I’m heading,
or at least from where I started this long journey.

My mind is shackled like a prisoner on the lam
and crashing out for freedom’s choice or bust.
I must admit I’m crazy from the fever,
and searching for the answers never found.

There was Martin, and John and Gandhi too
teaching love ins, peace and happiness.
We wrote and sang and made love in bushes
While celebrating Woodstock Nation.

But, we  had Tricky **** and Kissinger
insisting on a war that no one wanted.
The killing fields stretched cross the ocean
to my backyard and yours, remember?

So choose my brethren, choose between
a war of blood, dismay and  torture
or of peace and love and happiness,
and a place called Woodstock Nation.

I came upon a crossroad
With tears down either lane
I didn't want the parting fork
But both trails led to pain

I came upon a crossroad
Which hurt would I prefer
There was so much love to miss
If I should turn from her

But my heart believed we had a chance
For better roads alone
As opposites from different worlds...
Forever's just too long

I came upon a crossroad
I did what I had to do
But the hardest thing I ever did....
Was turn away from you

Apparently,
I thump my thighs
missing a beat
left by my side
in the argument
of confusion...

Apparently,
I look the fool
aimlessly adrift
forlorn in my
abstract direction
looking for keys...

Apparently,
I’m not the boy
playing baseball
in back my house
the weakest one
doing his best
to succeed, not to fail...

Apparently,
I fantasize, still do at 52
‘bout being the best
standing straight
and *****
at five feet two
It’s always been...it always will...

Apparently,
my dormant tracks
came fool circle
with endless
Cheshire cat-like grins
pretending I’m in
but I’m not...

Apparently,
and eventually
the laughter subsides
and the hurt
hides inside
while the clown reappears
or the drum rat-a-tats
and the pain still remains...

Apparently,
I died a million times
I’ve sailed
the dreaded seas
near and far
upon the ship
taking one last trip...

Actually,
I’ve learned to cope
to deal with the disease
and live the life
and the hand
I’ve been dealt...

Cascading crests
on the Outer Banks,
North Carolina, and
sun drenched bodies
sing hallelujah.
Rejoice the day and
twitter our songs.
We take our place
on the drifting dunes
and at last;
at peace.
__

Opened eyes
with bated breath
and swells of clouds
on the Outer Banks,
North Carolina
Chanting, rejoice the day
and peace at last.
__

The thoughts remain
and stay the same,
as wind blown skirts
corral the day
and stroll along
deserted beaches
in North Carolina,
Outer Banks.
__

Gulls waft and soar
on currents of air,
while women read
and pages turn,
exploring the text.
Men strum guitars
and pound the beach
on the Outer Banks,
North Carolina.
__

Seconds pass while
the ocean resounds
and couples stroll
hand in hand.
Loving the moment,
feeling the love,
awaiting the next
timeless minute
here alone on the
Great Outer Banks,
North Carolina.
