The wet smoldering scent
of burning dogwood
leaves

reminds me of the hours
spent in the garden
kissing

the soiled palms of
a woman tousled
from work.

I need to know
if you think of me;

winter is coming
and it often arrives
with unexplainable sorrow.

She boils animal bones
for one  day,  up three
times a night to check
the rolling calcium

and within the mineral water
she believes are the dreams
of cultures like Jews
rising from

mass graves, missing faces
from family portraits, no
violence against young
or old;

she drinks.

I  am knocking on  doors,
open  them and hear me
shout across the U.S.A. :

I may be black as blindness
or rainbow hue,
but I am as
American,

as you.

Slumped on an old pink couch, television
test pattern flickering off their biscotti
painted walls,  Pall Mall smoldering
on the rug beneath Jack’s fingers,
Lorene mostly dead, Jack might
as well be;  early a.m., dark.

She is soap smooth from Achilles
to scalp’s apex

for years contemplated
suicide

instead, she learned
the right nutrients

creates life that bursts
above all

else.
Book covered, spilling ravens
Onto the ground, marble statues
Dark rooms and blood found
Smoke, smoke, smoke
Tobacco, fire, rooftop water falling
Dripping
Like the sap of a tree, syrupy
Thick, like a dream
Do I see
Walls, all around, all around me here
Damp with the condensation of fear
Skeletons howling, vocal chords intact
Sweat still
Runs down their back
Too
Hot in this place
Hellfire, drowned in desire
For what?
where lovers cry
where dreams die
where clouds are gone
And hearts are torn

I know a place
where eyes don't sleep
Neither do they blink
phones don't beep
And minds don't think

I know a place
Where roads don't meet
Shuffle don't feet
Flowers don't blossom
And life is for ransom

I know a place
where bitter is sweet
where tweeters don't tweet
where roosters don't crow
where nothing goes pro

I know a place
where it rains it don't shine
whence it rains rains wine
where people don't mind
that they search and don't find

I know a place
where war does thrive
and peace is but in shards
where dead are alive
and in silence speak words

I know a place
where all is wanting
everyone is chanting
even the dogs are panting
for there's no more hunting

I know a place
where lovers go to cry
were dreams go to die
where searchers don't find
where seers are the blind

I know a place
A Flower blooming by the path lending fragrance to the earth
Getting trampled by the heel that doesn't see it's worth
