Gone
A Thomas Hawkins Aug 2010
I walk along beside you
each and every day
watching over what you do
listening out for what you say

Advice I try to give it
and yet it goes unheard
It's like I speak but you wont listen
not even to a single word

It's probably the same
for all parents just like me
it's hard to make children listen
it's hard to make them see

It hurts to know you cry at night
as you go off to sleep
to hear my daughter sobbing
to see the tears she weeps

If only you could talk to me
I could help I'm sure you'd find
But instead the words always the same
"Hey Dad, oh, never mind"

But now as you sit in the churchyard
I hear you ask me why
but no more words can you get out
before you start to cry

Why is it I'm so useless
as you sit here all alone
and shed tears at the graveside of...
just who's name is on the stone!

Oh my god it cant be true
please say it isn't so
Is the why that you were asking me
why I had to go?

Do tragic poems fill a selfish need
a desire to show others how we bleed
By showing that we're weak
is it martyrdom we seek
Do tragic poems fill a selfish need

Do poems of lost love serve a purpose
to remind of the past that deeply hurt us
Wearing hearts upon our sleeves
so publicly we grieve
Do poems of lost love serve a purpose

And what about the poems we don't write
of the things that really keep us up at night
About the pain that is too real
when we can't express just how we feel
The poets undisclosed internal fight
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
Today I woke up to your voice
calling out my name
and it sounded like sweet music
so gentle its refrain

it was like waking up to raindrops
falling softly on my face
and for a moment memories
had fallen out of place

but then it all came creeping back
and the pain welled up inside
of the night I woke up to your voice
when in my sleep you cried

I don't know how you reached me
from so may miles away
but one minute I was sound asleep
the next I heard you say

please honey, come and get me
for I don't feel so good
somethings happening to the baby
it doesn't feel like it should

As fast as I could get there
I drove the 40 miles
to your sisters on the lakeshore
where we'd shared so many smiles

But as I turned round the corner
nearly crashing at the gate
I could see the paramedics
and I knew I was too late

They said you didn't make it
that the baby had died too
why did you hide your sickness from me
there could've been something we could do

Well that was seven years ago
and each day I feel the pain
But today I woke up to your voice
calling out my name.

And it sounded like music...

Love is
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
To me love is quite simple,
not a complicated thing,
sometimes written on a paper,
and sealed with a ring.

Sometimes carved into an oak tree,
or written out in verse.
Sometimes spoken in the words,
for better or for worse.

But all those things just demonstrate,
to others how you feel.
They are not what love is all about.
They are not what makes it real.

Real love is not just passion,
not just desire and not just lust.
Real love involves integrity,
honesty and trust.

Real love is truly everything,
and holding nothing back.
It is there in times of plenty,
and grows in times of lack.

Its the first thing that you feel,
at the start of every day,
and its with you all the time,
in what you do and what you say.

Its the reason for that smile,
that just appears on your face.
Its why you sometimes end up laughing,
wiping tears from your face.

Its that midnight warm embrace,
that soothes you as you sleep.
Its a feeling oh so wonderful,
that will sometimes make you weep.

Its the reason we accomplish,
things we never thought we could,
and find ourselves attempting,
things we swore we never would.

Love isn't just a part time thing,
in a lover that we chose.
It's a spiritual possession,
we don't ever want to lose.

The phone call - part II
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
He sits in his chair to quietly reflect
on how things went and tries not to expect
or get carried away with dreams in his head
so he gets up and goes to lay down in his bed

He closes his eyes and sees her still there
curled up under a blanket alone in the chair
The phone in her hand and smile on her face
he knows who she is so this must be her place

Her face lights right up, the calls going well
but how far will things go, its too early to tell
They talk about dreams and the things that they've done
and from out of nowhere "could she be the one?"

"Come on now slow down" he thinks to himself
"getting that far ahead is bad for your health
You know that she's great and pretty and smart
but lets just see where this goes put the brakes on your heart"

Somehow he pushes those thoughts to one side
and basks in the moment, the warmth felt inside
"You know it went well" he thinks with a smile
"meeting someone like this, well its sure been a while"

It's been a few years since he last opened the door
and there's been no one he'd liked to have knocked it before
and now here he is phone still in his hand
last incoming call from far cross the land

And as he lays back with a smile on his face
he sees her again on the phone at her place
She's saying goodbye and smiling still
will they speak again? He sure hopes they will.

The phone call - part I
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
She picked up the phone and cleared her throat
It was time to get this done
As she was punching in his number
The thought flashed past, is he the one?

And it started ringing
two thousand miles away
too late to turn back now
just what's he gonna say

Then a voice upon the other end
said "Hey there, how are you"
and she swallowed hard and cleared her throat
its just a thing she likes to do

The more they spoke the less she cared
about all her fears and doubts
They talked about most everything
life's ups and downs and ins and outs

And by the end her nerves had passed
her throat no longer dry
She hung up the phone with a smile on her face
after they had said goodbye

So thats one step closer taken
it was great and lots of fun
and now and then that thought comes back
"you think he could be the one?"

But what to do and where to go
from here is on her mind
To settle for something less
or take a risk and leave less behind

Love isn't...
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
Love isn't...
forever like they say
Love isn't...
something that never fades away

Love isn't...
all the lies and the deceit
Love isn't...
just what goes on between the sheets

Love isn't...
where you expect that it will be
Love isn't...
something new to you or me

Love isn't...
dependent on being rich or being poor
Love isn't...
something I remember anymore

Love isn't...
insecurity and doubt
Love isn't...
something I want to be without

Love isn't...
always happiness and laughter
Love isn't...
sadly, happy ever after.

A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
Possibilities
Of something more than romantic flirtation
The chance to discover the truth behind the spark
Expectations, I have none
No plans, no hopes, no dreams of how things may turn out
To expect is to hope at the expense of all others
In doing so alternatives can't help but get pushed to one side
And thats the last thing I would want.
Lets just see what happens shall we?
Never done one of these before, I hope it doesn't show too much.

Reginald "combover" Twistleton-Smythe
had hair on his head but just on the side
He wore a big hat when out for a walk
Too scared to shave and have a flat-hawk
One day at his Gran's fell asleep after tea
and woke up to find he was combover free
He saw grandmas scissors behind on the shelf
As she looked in his eyes and said "Be yourself!
With that combover thing Reg, you sure do look silly
Go shave your head, you'll look just like Bruce *****"
"But my heads the wrong shape, it just wont do the trick,
I'll look less like Bruce ***** and more like a ****"
"Listen to your Gran for I always know best,
I'm not saying go out and run round in a vest.
Just cut your hair short and wear it with pride,
it'll be like a mohawk but just on its side"

A pride in her appearance she does take
but cries when once again alone she wakes

Perhaps is not the way she looks that counts
the frustration of her loneliness starts to mount
In time she'll see her attitudes the key
and a nicer person she will start to be

Cos it don't matter if your pretty,
well dressed or even rich.

Trouble's gonna call
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
I hear Troubles gonna call
gonna knock upon my door
so what am I to do
if she should push me to the floor

Or if she takes me by the hand
leads me to another room
and smothers me in ecstasy
what a way to meet my doom

But perhaps all that is rumors
and she's not like that at all
just a victim of the lies from those
on whom she doesn't call

Thats why I don't make judgments
on tales others tell
I'd rather find out for myself
cos then I'd know ****** well

If the rumors they are true
then I'll know just what to do
but if the rumors are just rumors
then I'm ready for that too

You see Troubles gonna call
and she's gonna call on me
and as for whats gonna happen next
we'll just have to wait and see.

My friends are pretty where I am plain
although none of them would ever say
So I'm left with no choice,
to get close to the boys
I have to give it away

Don't me wrong I like it
For those few minutes I feel real pretty
But ten minutes on

From every tearful high

From every deep depression

wake me with the sound of rain
as on the metal roof it falls

Rouse me with sounds of nature
rising winds before the storm
give me time to close the shutters
before returning to the warm

If you could do this in the morning
and wake me in a gentle way
For once I'd take the day off
and in my bed I'd stay.

Single loads of laundry
sad freezer meals for one
no dishwasher for me

the never tested voicemail
on the outgoing only phone
one knife, one fork, one plate
signs that yes I live alone

take-out menu fridge door
a doorbell never rung
ipod playlists for the company
that never ever comes

early nights and books
an optimistic queen size bed
a collection of matching pillows
that only ever see my head

the one cup coffee maker
a single slice of toast
bills paid on time or early
nothing handwritten in the post

a will with nothing in it
and no one to leave it to
burial or cremation
I mean really, which would you?

no life insurance needed
retirement arranged
no girlfriend, lover, wife
ex, current or estranged.

Is this the way its headed
if it is I'll pack my trunk
shave my head and dress in orange
move to thailand, be a monk.

Secret goodbyes

And so here today I say goodbye
at your graveside in the rain
all the mourners they have gone now
its just you and me again

The scars of your sudden passing
no-one will ever see
like a thousand shards of glass
driven deep inside of me

The only evidence of you being here
is the unmade bed you left behind
And memories of the love we made
and of our bodies intertwined

So many things will go unsaid
so many dreams go unfulfilled
So many rooms are darker now
That you lights not there to fill

My world is much more empty now
without your gentle grace
As I close my eye's the tears come
at the memory of your face

I wish I could have been there
to be with you at the end
To cradle you within my arms
my lover and my friend.

Our time together was our secret
and one that will be kept
None will ever know the "other man"
at your graveside stood and wept.

How I lost my hat
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
I cast my hat, into the ring
so full of fearful doubt
expecting you, to pick it up
and simply toss it out
But unbeknown to me
hidden there behind your eyes
was a secret hope and longing
that it might just be your size
So casually you picked it up
and looked it up and down
I was expecting any minute
'pon your face to see a frown
You brushed it off so thoroughly
cleaned every little bit
closed your eyes then put it on
and smiled as it fit
Almost instinctively you opened them
and were looking right at me
My surprise and expectation
must have been plain for all to see
You casually walked over
and whispered in my ear
"but its always been you silly,
now lets get out of here"
And so my friends thats how it was
that I came to lose my hat
and why you see me grinning now
like a hatless Cheshire cat.

I want to run away with you,
and leave all this behind.
Can you imagine us together,
all the adventures we would find?

We could travel the world over
or find our spot and settle down
Somewhere by a lake
thats not too close to town.

We would live and love together
eat off the land and from the lake
Being careful to be careful
and never too much take

We would sit at night and write
under blankets on the swing
Talk forever to each other
til we knew everything

In the summer we'd go swimming
skinny dipping in the lake
And lie naked on the rocks to dry
the summer sun our bones to bake

In fall we would cut firewood
then split and stack the logs
go for long walks in the forest
you and me and all the dogs

Come winter time we'd hibernate
heating soup over the fire
make love upon the hearth rug
flames and passion rising higher

Then finally in spring time
as the ice begins to thaw
we would celebrate our life
and then do it all once more

And our poetry would tell of this
of our perfect little life
A life outside the rat race
free of pressure and of strife

I want to run away with you,
think of all the things we'll see
Can you imagine us together,
will you run away with me?

Just got bills to pay and mouths to feed

But it comes with some conditions
precautions if you will
Be sure that when you give it back
at least its beating still

You shouldn't have to be too careful
its got tougher over time
Why should you risk breaking yours
you can always just break mine

It always seems to fix itself
eventually at least
But for now the vultures of my past
have had their final feast.

So come on folks, who wants a piece
oh didn't I explain
In the time it took to write this
it got broken once again.

The quarter
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
And the music fell like rain from an unseen apartment somewhere in the quarter.
Warm summer rain.
Light and refreshing.

The kind of rain you didn't mind getting wet in and soaked to the skin with.

A single Saxophone.

A single Saxophone played not just with the lips and the fingers and the lungs, but with the soul.

Its delicate melody trickled down the rooftops and overflowed onto the streets below.
Somewhere in this labyrinth of alley ways and courtyards and balconies was a poet.

A poet in love.

A musical poet.

A musical poet creating rhyme and rhythm and feeling with just a handful of notes and a heart full of passion.

For though there were no words to accompany this music you knew, you just knew what was being said.
Every drop of rain, every note had a purpose, a message. A message that carried you off and made you forget. Forget where you were, where you were going and all the things that made life not so good. You forgot all that and let it be washed away by the rain.

And you closed your eyes

And you smiled

And you felt like dancing, right there in the street, a slow dance, a gentle sway.

And as quickly as you noticed it, it stopped.

Then you felt the chill

The first drop, the second.

Then it really did rain, the heavens truly opened.

And you closed your eyes

And you smiled

You remember the good old days
the days during the war
When there was still a thing called homelessness
and everyone seemed poor

You'd work all day and half the night
just so you'd get by
And then they'd send your job abroad
or give it to a cheaper guy

Your money would buy less and less
cos things cost more and more
And everyone felt scared
but why we were not sure

Economies went through the floor
the whole world was in debt
Even things like land and real estate
were no longer a safe bet

Oh how I miss those happy days
so much better then than now
Hang on a sec whats that up there
is it a flying pig or cow?

for this race

Days when our work
was all done at home
On horse or in buggies
is how we would roam

We'd grow our own food
raise our own stock
and keep time by the chime
of a grandfather clock

We'd sit on the porch
and we'd read or we'd write
and have deep conversations
on into the night

We'd fish in the pond
and swim in the creek
and shingle the roof
whenever it leaked

We'd not have no money
but be richer than most
And thank god for our fortune
with grace and a toast

We'd sit by the fire
in winter when cold
and live happy together
right 'til we got old

Then when the time came
for our maker to see
We'd get laid to rest
in the plot 'neath the tree

and give him less cause to complain
and really, I mean, he does have a point
she did forget chips for the game.

But she's beginning to think it aint right
to be beaten til she's black and blue
So she tells him she's had enough
gonna leave and move somewhere new

Now she's hiding behind the curtains
I guess the neighbours heard the shot
and really, I mean, he does have a point
over his dead body or not.

Worry not for where the steamer heads
it simply helps us run away
But before you close this door for good
please listen to what I say

I'd never keep you from your loved ones
only your pride could e'er do that
and just because we sail away
doesn't mean we won't sail back

Why content yourself with hearsay
and yet insist I give you proof
The love you feel for me is real
but for him much more aloof

I can't promise you a lifetime
any more than any man
but what we have is here right now
with him its just a sham

You ask of me some guarantee
and then provide your own
That to live with one you do not love
would be worse than if alone

My love is not a lie my love
and never could it be
it's simply a dream thats unfulfilled
a dream of you and me

But if you choose to go to Sussex
please do not take me there
For these memories will haunt you
and lead you to despair.

Instead cast memories aside
both of me and of this week
I will think of you in Sussex
each time your name I speak

For though my this dream may not come true
I'll not deny it came to pass
For I will see its memory
in every looking glass

I'll not say another word my love
the decision must be yours
We both know that truth and happiness
starts through the cabin doors

I know you're worried bout your family name
and I understand I do
But will the name give consolation
to a life lived not for you?

Will they thank you for your misery
and the sacrifice you make
Will the name still give you comfort
when at night you lie awake

I never planned for this happen
truth is it took my by surprise
And now my love I'm petrified
that no more I'll see your eyes

For they will look up at another
someone else will you call Dear
all the time remembering
the days that we spent here

Do not tell me if you love me
or if your hearts like mine, unlocked
Simply come down to the harbour
board the steamer where she's docked

She sails upon the evening tide
gangways up at seven
If your hearts to run away with mine
come to cabin two eleven

And if duty is to keep you here
and you choose to play a part
remember there's always a place
for you inside my heart.

Everlasting love
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
childhood sweet hearts
sharing the same beat hearts
what a love like that must be to find

marrying your first love
your better or for worse love
leaving not a part of you behind

growing old together
while never being old together
holds the key to many of lifes charms

until the day does come
when they leave this world as one
and are laid to rest within each others arms.

Along the promenade we stroll
together hand in hand
Two strangers til this very night
both in a far off land

A chance encounter brought us here
but choices made us stay
Just how this night will end for us,
alone, I cannot say

We talk of home and family
of battles lost and won
We walk as stars and moonlight fade
replaced by the rising sun

At dawn we turn and head for home
or what passes for it now
And part upon your hotel steps
with a doffed hat and a bow

Tomorrow we will meet once more
in the centre of the city square
Where we can take a carriage ride
to examine this affair

One night alone is not enough
and I feel that I want more
I sense that you may feel the same
but I need to know for sure

So as we ride the promenade
sat together hand in hand
I will tell you how I feel for you
that you may understand.

The mirror in the man
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
Once a day I get a visitor
occasionally its twice
Its a guy who looks just like me
he seems troubled but quite nice

He shaves his face and brushes his teeth
spits and has a rinse
Tries to flatten that wayward hair
he's not a frog but not quite a prince

And the he looks me in the eyes
and I see the thoughts go round
Eventually he lowers his gaze
and looks down to the ground

He looks to me like someone lost
uncertain of his way
I can see so much inside him
that he has yet to say.

In time I'm sure he'll find his way
better things will come to pass
But I have no way to let him know
for I am his looking glass.

Man in the mirror
A Thomas Hawkins Jul 2010
What does the guy in the mirror see
when he's looking back at me?

Does he have the same questions,
about who I used to be.

Does he know where the grey comes from
or the crows feet on my eyes

Does he see his own reflection
and wonder what inside

Does he wonder where the boy went
so confident and sure

Does he know when this old man showed up
who knows nothing anymore

Does he see the honesty that lives behind my eyes
Does he feel my pain, can he hear my sighs

Each day he looks me in the eye
and sees right to my soul
But holds for me no answers
on why life takes such a toll
