Human Nature?
John Dewberry Dec 2019
I will not
Hide my shame
I cannot
Mend your scars
I will not
Actively ignore
Or discard

My hatred
For what we’ve become
Give me the gun
I’ll shoot the flag in half
And sew it back together

We can
Not blame the hate
On the other side
If we
Don’t look at ourselves
(And) Realize
That we’re all to blame
(We’re all to blame)
No ones
A special snowflake

Flames of the end shine endlessly
We’re all to blame to blame

I hate
Everyone equally
It’s not about gender or race
I hate myself too
At times I feel like

We romanticize the hell we create
No ones
accepting responsibility
Blame left, blame right
We never looked inward
To realize  that we’re part of the issue

Ours isn’t ours
Mine isn’t yours
Theirs isn’t I’s
And everybodies a victim of themselves
Grow the **** up
And accept the fate
Of the world has pre determined
We live and grow
Die and appreciated for the memories we leave behind
My generation is one swine
Lead on by the parents
Who draw incorrect and far fetched parallels of Peeceived ****** or Socialism

Only we the people
Can make America great again
Turn inward
And realize that by voting
We actively contribute to our perpetual demise
Lawyer, businessman, and politicians don’t fix anything

We’ve done this to ourselves

Henceforth a decree
Of solidarity between those who
Aren’t on the fringes of politics
To unite against extremes on both sides

Calling to arms
For a common goal of unity
It’ll take you and me
Marxists won’t make three
Let’s agree conservatively
To pursue the defense of our union
Liberally
Without succumbing to the extremes
We’ve learned nothing from the Soviet collapse?
We’ve learned nothing from the Nazis or the KKK?
History starts by learning objectively
And destiny isn’t pre-determined

So sorry scholar
Go on and holler
Take to trial
The victim of a horse collar
Tackle and dare that individual
To think and you’ve created your own monster
Why is your worst hell someone who can think for themselves?

I’ll never understand.

Fiona

I haven’t seen you in years
I could wait a bit longer
But  I feel that
Something in my life is missing
Maybe it’s you
Maybe it’s me missing myself
I’m fixated on why
I’m still thinking about this

Gotta let it go

Reminiscing
on childhood days
Schoolyard plays
The jealousy
I had
So long ago has dissipated
Still, my feelings haven’t gone
Despite my best efforts

I don’t mind being alone
It’s made me stronger
Anyway, How are you doing
Today after all this time
I’m still the same as I was 15 years ago

I never changed
rI guess I grew up
Marginally
I’m slightly smarter
And a tad more witty
Yet I’m still
as insecure as before

Oh, Fiona

All the energy I’ve wasted
Trying to forget
I should just reach out
This isn’t obsession yet
But I fear that’ll develop

Eventually

I don’t mind being alone
It’s made me stronger
Anyway, How are you doing
Today after all this time
I’m still the same as I was 15 years ago

Eggshells crack
In the mirror
While you’re searching
For yourself
The floor is paved
With gold and laved
And hot sulfur
Will you vie

Turning away
Isn’t the worst thing you could do
Growth and perseverance force you
To stay true

Are you loving life
Through the pain and strife
As your dancing with your personality
Don’t mind your shadow
Laughing
While your waltzing with
Your demons

Who said
Life was easy
They’re full of ****
But I promise you
The struggles worth it!

Burning ties
Changing tides

Ebb and flow
Don’t be afraid
To fight the currents

Mind you not

Sometimes the doghouse
Is where you wanna be
free-dom and freedumb
Are blessings in disguise
Have you realized
That their punishments
Provide you space
Time, shelter
And shade
From their looming shade

Doghouses
Are standing fixtures
Provide reflection
Dissection
And Introspection
With the added benefit
Of protection  from the elements

What is your wish?
To serve retribution in a dish
What is you goal
Are you vying to dig this country
Into a proverbial hole

Is it partisan politics
That divides us?
Is it not the people who
Congregate
To decide
Whatever happened to soul
We cannot blame
Nor scapegoat a single man
Nor a single party
Just because we don’t agree with them

But rationality looses
And both sides grow a third hand
****** are the people
Who can’t talk
Who can’t speak
Who can’t hear the truth

We’ve ****** ourselves
And know we the people
Have to gain a collective consciousness
And gather

But that won’t ever happen
So instead
We try to make sense of it
We scapegoat
And lie to ourselves
By giving politicians the power

But it seems
We can’t forgive
Or in the very least accept
That we’ve trusted for too long
And that we’ve abandoned
Core values
For what we consider newer values
That, without reason or rhyme
Are the status quo

How do we know the answer...

the meaning comes later
Natural spewing of syllables
Usually appear organized

I take minutes to jot down
My thoughts

I’m very productive and
(It’s always good)
To write more
(I’m inspired constantly)
You should be to

Phrases, words, and metaphors
Overthinking nevermore
Evermore pages should get filled
It’s easy
Writers block doesn’t exist
Unless you force it

But the words are on the tip
Just hum a melody
And let the pen be your lip.

Do you feel alone
Disenfranchised
Destitute and defeated
I don’t have the answers you seek
But I do have a voice
And At the end of the day
You do possess
Freedom of  choice
Made by the self
Not by partisan parties
Vying for your vote
Or media
Reenforcing their doctrine and stances

Pre chorus
So raise your voice up
Against all odds
Be the individual
Be a beacon for others
Be your guiding light
Tonight, fight groupthink
Donkeys and elephants

Chorus 1

The world’s what you make it
My friends
It doesn’t have to be paved
With unanswered ends
With swelling lungs as jagged pills
Life’s a screensaver of rolling hills

Chorus 2
I’m not implying  that utopias real
bur peace could exist
Without  demo reels
Or a knife in the back
Of your free-thinking mind

Verse 2

Just close your eyes
Imagine possessing
Lenses to sift through the ****
See yourself
As a human
Of equal standing
And not as  a yes-man
Nor slave master or captain of a ship

Chorus 3

Today you’re an individual
Redeemed  of your sin
Of conformity
You don’t need to have power
To know you have a voice
And a choice
That you’ve no need
To apologize for

Bridge 2

The worlds a confusing place
But it is what we make  it
So let’s make it right
By doing right
And not just being Right

End

Don’t succumb
And be brain dead
As they wish
Trying something a bit different with this one. I’m growing more reluctant and outright critical of politics and political systems as a whole. You can put a price on power— you can’t put a price on people— this is where I’m coming from here
John Dewberry Sep 2019
Don’t you feel gratified
In the safety of your thoughts
Utopia exists
As a mode of escapism
What was is now what is
And what will always be us

Divided we stand
Independently falling
In unison
A nation destroyed
By its own people

Give them drugs
To ease the pain
Give them love
To numb the pain
Revolution
To fulfill the fallacy of nirvana
And a coupon
For better ideas
I’m just now realizing that this reads like a love letter to the 60’s in a way— this more of a critique of my generation

If it’s healthy
To forgo romantic interest
To preserve a strong ever blooming friendship?

The moments I can get you off my mind
The moments are short
But I can unwind

I wonder if I talk too much
You always respond

But you never engage
And you’re far from the shy type

Both of us are self-identifying loners
Maybe over-thinking is my plight

Patience is a virtue

I wonder if it’s a good idea to test myself

Groveling in his past mistakes
A vagabond helplessly searches
For direction and forgiveness
To absolve and adjudicate
His past wrong doing
He confessed to a priest
Who let him know he was eschewed
He said " Forgive me father for I know not what to do"
" My son" replied the priest with much valor and pride " I could tell you anything but I can't guarantee you'll like it or abide by it.

Your moral compass is lacking
Let's start there
You're living in an ostracized planet
Where no one can care
Your morals are allegory of a life lived in want
Your ethics and your standards of life won't assuage the need for self growth"

" So you're saying that in order to gain the fecundity in life I wish to see I need to stick to my morals and let anyone change me, never yield to learning on life's sequestered journey”

“ Well, now you’re starting to get it”

I don’t wanna be famous
I don’t wanna be famous
I don’t wanna be famous
I don’t wanna be famous

I’m a humble *******
Not an insolent *******
I don’t follow your trends
I’m not looking to make friends
Or amends
Anything I say can
Be taken however
By whoever

But lest you forget
That these are merely words
And this is music
Open to interpretation
Around the nation
Across radio stations
I’m telling you
I won’t do a *******
Interview

I don’t wanna be famous
I don’t wanna be famous
I don’t wanna be famous
I don’t wanna be famous

Saturn (Ebb and Flow)
John Dewberry Feb 2020
Mists of porcelain
Tides of clay
High cynicism
Forecasted today

Ebb and Flow
Have a great marriage
But you’ll never catch them
in a carriage
Fated fading ecstasy
find their rings returned to Saturn
Yet she remains blue
Her orbit remains in tact
Despite feeling unglued
John Dewberry Mar 2020
Parallelograms
Go unparalleled
Until  trapped
by trapezoids
That
are than fused and molded
To fit inside
Rhombuses

For the squares who
Lack imagination
You’ve likely raised a brow at this notion
And for the cynics ever questioning
I say congratulations
You’ve done a stellar job... at proving nothing
Life is about the possibility of what could be
Based on what is
Improbability lives only in the minds
Of those who’d prefer to Uber to a dream
Just to avoid a toll
And if rules must be broken
So that tradition may redefine itself
Then who’s to stop it

Tragedy+Knowledge
John Dewberry Feb 2020
When swatting flies
With the power of  hubris
Mind your lane
consider the intention
Of your peers and associate

Life ain’t cheap
And it seems nowadays
that people draw curtains to early
Wanting that sunset to book-end
Life continues with an everlasting
....

The trajectory of tragedy
Is triumph
When people die
The legacy is what you leave
Memory isn’t permanent
It’s fleeting, selective, and unforgiving

How do you want to feel in your final moments?
Are you safe in the notion that you’re leaving alone

RIP
My friend
That girl deserves life
For what she did to you
Only time will tell
What justice is truly carried out

Your Voice
John Dewberry Oct 2019
In this room
With my friends
And 50 others I’m alone
Zoned out, tranquil
I’ve managed to
Focus and tune out the speakers

“ he’s weird”
Until you talk to me
Know you realize
I can hear you
With clarity
Your voice is sweat like chocolate
Smooth like coffee
Subtle as a whisper
And more tuneful than these **** songs

Rise up and fight
Comrades in arms
Unify to disarm
The powers that be
Through bloodshed
And protest we shall prevail
No longer shall we suffer
Under the spell of falsehoods
Or empty promises

We’ll fight
The kremlin
Till death due us part
Russia shall be free

Rejoice
In your existence
The birth of the pure
Saccharine *******
You won’t devour
Rise up ‘guest
The arm of the state
The ones that never fed
Or gave a ****

Through the death of
Forbearers we’ve grown stronger
Unified in the cause
Of autonomy
The hammer and sickle
Of past trepidation
Have only served to make
Us stronget

Call
John Dewberry Jun 2020
I waited
For your call
Like autumn waits for your rain
When it rung, there was poor reception
How profane

Immunity
John Dewberry Mar 2020
Ever want to detach
Just be yourself
For a change
Come to me
Emotionally available
Internally empty

******* to ****
Is ******* pointless
This is a truth
That I’ve believed for so long
But I’ll go till I hit
Rock bottom

You can’t feel fulfilled
Until you lose yourself
Immunity doesn’t exist
Until you need a prescription

Loneliness is not an  ultimatum
Always wine and dine
Before you lay
Cause when you lay
Without getting laid
And sleep together
It’s a date
That’s a date she’s to remember

Wake and prepare breakfast
Think fast
Cause you know
Your cooking isn’t up to par
Doesn’t matter
You’ll be at the bar
With a mamosa before long

You’re deinking to celebrate
The fact that you beat
The notion and stereotype
That you **** for its sake
you don’t feel fake
Merely empty
Cause she left

But you’ll move on
You romanceced your way into bed
And didn’t succumb to your libido
A victory unto itself
John Dewberry Mar 2020
It may not be ladies night
But if you’re single
Let me buy you dinner
And a drink and go from there

Drinks are cheap
But you’re so fine
What’s your fancy
Brandy, champagne, or wine
Let’s chat and unwind

Singles swing
On a double stroke
Once for luck, seconds for folks
Time slows down
Yes it’s true
Ironic isn’t it, my minutes start with you

COVID
John Dewberry Mar 2020
Whoever craves modesty
Indefinitely
Shall be completely lost
When the quarantine ends

The stir-crazy
Lonely
And the otherwise social
Will be compensated
For this purgatory
We had no hand in causing

We now just bide our time
And wait for the quarantine to end
And the cages to rust
